Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'bible' of occupational health, Fitness for Work is the most in-depth and comprehensive resource available on the relationship between ill health and employment. The specialist advice given covers health hazards in the work place, fitness for work, and rehabilitation after illness or injury. A truly current source, it discusses the social aspects of work, and problems associated with our ageing workforce and changing population. Communicating occupational health advice to patients, employees, and doctors, Fitness for Work improves relationships in the workplace. It details the impact of a patient's health on work, and how they can be supported to gain or remain in employment. This invaluable source argues that in a suitable role, an employee can derive immense benefits to their health and well-being from work. Importantly, this comprehensive title also presents tactics on how to reduce inappropriate barriers to work for those who have overcome an injury or disease, and those who live with chronic conditions. Fully revised and updated, the sixth edition of Fitness for Work is based on the latest research evidence and clinical advances. The first half of the book focuses on the general principles of fitness to work and occupational health practice, such as legal aspects, ethical principles, health promotion, health surveillance and general principles of rehabilitation. In addition, it advises on sickness absence, ill health retirement, medication, transport, vibration and travel. In the second half of the book, chapters are arranged by clinical speciality or topic, and are co-authored by a topic specialist and a specialist occupational physician providing a comprehensive view of the subject. For effortless reference, each specialty chapter outlines the conditions covered, their prevalence and impact, and discusses the clinical aspects and treatment that affects work capacity. All recommendations are evidence-based and make use of the NICE guidelines. The definitive text on the relationship between health and work, Fitness for Work delivers a wealth of valuable consensus guidance, codes of practice, and locally evolved standards. This highly-regarded resource is essential for all occupational health practitioners.

Book Development of a High utility Evidence based System of Occupational Health Surveillance for Divers

Download or read book Development of a High utility Evidence based System of Occupational Health Surveillance for Divers written by Christopher Charles Sames and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routine health surveillance, and specifically routine occupational health surveillance in the form of a medical examination, is commonplace, and for many workers is mandatory. Perpetuation of workplace policies that mandate testing such as 'the annual medical' is influenced by a variety of 'stakeholder' agendas. However, evidence of the utility of such testing is lacking. The primary aim of this research was to find evidence to clarify whether widely accepted basic components of the current occupational diver health surveillance programme are 'fit for purpose' and actually enable an appropriate determination of fitness to work. The working hypothesis underlying the studies that comprise this thesis was that there is no evidence to support many of the current mandatory requirements of occupational health surveillance or fitness-to-work determination. A secondary aim was to propose a justifiable and logical health surveillance system for this particular group of workers, professional divers, with possible broader applicability to other categories of workers. Using the case of professional divers as an exemplar, the various components of the routine health surveillance and certification process were examined for their contribution to determining fitness to dive. First, the only two mandatory investigations of the physical examination are tests of lung function and hearing. The value of these investigations was assessed using three longitudinal studies seeking evidence of any correlation between professional diving and clinically significant deterioration in either lung function or hearing. Second, a postal survey was conducted to determine whether the doctors who perform dive medical examinations were able to accurately determine fitness to dive based on vital health information. Third, diver satisfaction with the current certification system was determined using an internet-based survey of registered divers over a 12-month period. Fourth, a qualitative study examined diver interpretations and the value of the individual component questions in the current annual health questionnaire. Fifth, the utility of the current surveillance system was examined using two audits spanning different 5-year intervals. These audits involved analysis of divers' health records to iv determine whether the vital information leading to diver disqualification came from the annual health questionnaire or from the medical examination. Finally, an audit of ex-divers was conducted to determine whether health-related issues were a significant factor in the high rate of attrition of professional divers. The results demonstrated that neither lung function nor hearing was significantly affected by long-term professional diving activity. The doctors who conduct medical assessments of divers were found to perform little better than chance in determining fitness to dive. Most divers were satisfied with the current health certification/surveillance system. Dissatisfaction was mainly related to cost and a limited understanding of the reasons for the various facets of the system. All questions comprising the annual health questionnaire were correctly interpreted by divers, although some questions were considered of low value by experts. Audits of the current system concluded that routine physical examination or investigations did not add significantly to the value of the health questionnaire in uncovering those conditions incompatible with, or requiring modification of, ongoing professional diving. Finally, health-related factors did not appear to be a significant determinant of diver attrition, strongly validating the modifications thus far to the health surveillance system. The over-all conclusion to be drawn from this body of research is that routine medical examinations of professional divers are unreliable and unnecessary. A modified surveillance programme, centred on a health questionnaire, has been proposed for this specialised group of workers, with the aim of providing considerable savings of time and money, but no increase in health risk. Other groups of workers are likely to be similarly affected by health surveillance protocols in need of revision for lack of a reliable supporting evidence base.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between performance of EOD job tasks and physical fitness measures and to determine minimum physical fitness scores, to serve as standards for EOD personnel. Subjects were 47 active-duty EOD personnel. Mean age was 31.8 +-5.8 years; stature, 177.4 +-5.8 cm; body mass, 81.1 +-10.9 kg; and body fat content, 17.1 +-5.3%. Physical fitness attributes measured were: Sit-reach distance, push-ups in 2 min, curl-ups in 2 min, pull-ups, long jump, 1.5-mile run, 3.0-mile run, 500-yd pool swim, and 1,000-yd ocean swim. Performance on 4 job task simulations was measured as time for task completion: (1) carrying diving equipment; (2) lifting twin-80 SCUBA tanks; (3) 500-yd bay surface swim; and (4)100-yd rescue swim. Fat-free mass was a significant predictor (p

Book Diving Science Revisited

Download or read book Diving Science Revisited written by Michael B. Strauss and published by Best Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diving Science...Revisited is like no other diving text, including its predecessor, Diving Science. Amplified with figures, tables, and photos in color, this book includes four unique and innovative parts amplified by nine contributors. - Medical problems of diving (MPD) are discussed from stimulus-response perspectives in the phase of a dive in which they are likely to occur. - MPD are explained by how they affect the human diver whether physical, physiological, psychological, and/or lack of awareness. - A variety of diving types and situations from breath-hold to rebreather, from children to women to older aged adults, from cold water to cave, and from deep altitude to diving with handicaps are described in individual chapters with their merits, hazards, and necessary precautions for safe diving. - Part IV contains a concise summary of the MPD from seven different perspectives ranging from the significance of the problem to when to return to diving. - Part V consists of a rhetorical question for each of the first four parts with bullet points that recap the subjects covered in each chapter. This book describes the positive as well as undesirable ways divers' interact with the aquatic environment. It is especially recommended for the following: -Diving instructors and supervisors - Those involved with clinical applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy - Those engaged in diving-associated marine biology and underwater missions - All divers, whether novice or advanced, who want to advance their knowledge about the science and medical challenges of diving.
