Book excerpt: Mild-mannered children’s book author Lyon Wentworth is caught in the middle of a bus hijacking in gritty 1970s New York in this taut psychological thriller. There are three men in the bar at the Port Authority bus terminal. Lyon Wentworth, a Connecticut children’s book author having a drink to celebrate his newest book, sits in the middle. He’s harmless. The other men aren’t. One is Willie Shep, a disgruntled supermarket employee who carries a Walther PPK and enough rage to burn Manhattan to the ground. The other is a bearded man with a .44 Magnum and a professional killer’s ruthless calm. All three men board the same bus. It’s doubtful they’ll all get off it alive. The bus is halfway through the Lincoln Tunnel when Willie presses his gun into the driver’s neck and tells him to stop. He shoots two passengers, killing one, and sends a message to the police demanding a million dollars and a private plane. An intricate dance is about to begin, and the most dangerous man on the bus may be the one who’s not carrying a gun. This irresistible mystery from Richard Forrest begins with a hostage situation as tense as classic films like Dog Day Afternoon or The Taking of Pelham 123. Lyon Wentworth may stare down his share of evil men, but The Death in the Willows is a mystery novel unlike any other. The Death in the Willows is the 4th book in the Lyon and Bea Wentworth Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: A no-nonsense politician and her children’s author husband search for answers to a retirement-home homicide in this gripping small-town murder mystery. Fabian Bunting wheels herself down the hallway of the nursing home, opera glasses clutched in her gnarled old hands. Outside, nurses on strike have formed a picket line, and Fabian wants to watch the commotion. As she peers through her binoculars, she sees something incredible: two men beating another senseless and tossing the victim into the back of a van. One of the thugs sees her, and before she can call for help, he has raced upstairs and tossed the helpless old woman into a scalding steam bath to boil alive. In her younger days, Fabian was a brilliant scholar, and the favorite professor of Connecticut politician Bea Wentworth, who has just been defeated in a re-election campaign. Bea refuses to believe her old teacher’s death was an accident and begins investigating. With the help of her husband, Lyon, a hot-air ballooning children’s author, she’ll find the answers to Fabian’s grisly murder lie at the center of an impossible locked-room puzzle. Book Saigon to Singers Glen

Download or read book Saigon to Singers Glen written by Jim Bowman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a global yet intimate scale, this thoughtful memoir invites you to explore a life well lived. Get to know Jim Bowman: he grew up in a conservative Mennonite farm family in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, came of age in the war-torn streets of Saigon, and has since lived a life of adventures across the globe, from the farming communities of Indonesia to the cosmopolitan city of Nairobi, Kenya and back to Virginia. In constellations of stories and philosophical musings, Bowman traces the transformation of his worldview. In his childhood, being faithful was mostly about following the rules of the church. His time in Vietnam as a conscientious objector and in Indonesia as an agricultural development worker expanded his perceptions of culture and ethics. Back in Virginia, the death of his son dealt a mighty challenge to the faith on which he had long relied. The raw grief and violent upheaval of his foundational beliefs led to a series of questions and new answers as he learned how to find peace again. Throughout the journey, Bowman’s tone is humble, honest, and always open to the experiences of others. Reflect on your own understanding of life in this changing, increasingly connected twenty-first century by reading about one exemplary life.

Download or read book In the Lion s Den written by Nechama Tec and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few lives shed more light on the complex relationship between Jews and Christians during and after the Holocaust--or provide a more moving portrait of courage--than Oswald Rufeisen's. A Jew passing as a Christian in occupied Poland, Rufeisen worked as translator for the German police--the very people who rounded up and murdered the Jews--and repeatedly risked his life to save hundreds from the Nazis. In this gripping biography, Nechama Tec, a widely acclaimed writer on the Holocaust, recounts Rufeisen's remarkable story. A youth of seventeen when World War II began, Rufeisen joined the exodus of Poles who fled the approaching German army. Tec vividly describes how Rufeisen used his ability to speak fluent German to pass as half German and half Polish in Mir, where he came to serve as translator and personal secretary to the German in charge of the gendarmerie. As he carried out his duties--reading death sentences to prisoners, swearing in new police officers before a portrait of Hitler--he earned the trust and affection of the German commander, yet lived in constant fear of discovery. He used his position to pass secret information to Jews and Christians about impending "aktions" and to sabatoge Nazi plans. Most notably, he thwarted the annihilation of the Mir ghetto by arming hundreds of doomed Jews and organizing their escape, and saved an entire Belorussian village from destruction. Denounced, Rufeisen escaped and found shelter in a convent, where he converted to Catholicism. Though a pacifist, he spent the rest of the war fighting in a Russian partisan unit. After the war, Father Daniel (as he is now known) became a priest and a Carmelite monk. Identifying himself as a Christian Jew and an ardent Zionist, he moved to Israel, where he challenged the Law of Return in a case that reached the High Court and attracted international attention. Today he continues to devote himself to bridging the gap between Christians and Jews. In the Lion's Den offers a stirring portrait of a Jewish rescuer during the Holocaust and its aftermath, illuminating the intricate connections between good and evil, cruelty and compassion, and Judaism and Christianity.

Book Stories My Father Told Me

Download or read book Stories My Father Told Me written by Jeffrey Lyons and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incredible collection of celebrity stories and photographs from 1934 to the present, from the archives of "The Lyons Den" by eminent New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons, compiled by his son, movie critic Jeffrey Lyons. This amazing collection of choice anecdotes takes us right back to the Golden Age of New York City nightlife, when top restaurants like Toots Shor’s, “21,” and Sardi’s, as well as glittering nightclubs like the Stork Club, Latin Quarter, and El Morocco, were the nightly gathering spots for great figures of that era: movie and Broadway stars, baseball players, champion boxers, comedians, diplomats, British royalty, prize-winning authors, and famous painters. From Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, from Ethel Barrymore to Sophia Loren, from George Burns to Ernest Hemingway, from Joe DiMaggio to the Duke of Windsor: Leonard Lyons knew them all. For forty glorious years, from 1934 to 1974, he made the daily rounds of Gotham nightspots, collecting the exclusive scoops and revelations that were at the core of his famous newspaper column, “The Lyons Den.” In this entertaining volume Jeffrey Lyons has assembled a considerable compilation of anecdotes from his father’s best columns, and has also contributed a selection of his own interviews with stars of today, including Penélope Cruz and George Clooney, among others. Organized chronologically by decade and subdivided by celebrity, Stories My Father Told Me offers fascinating, amusing stories that are illustrated by approximately seventy photographs. He so captured the tenor of those exciting times that the great Lincoln biographer Carl Sandburg said: “Imagine how much richer American history would have been had there been a Leonard Lyons in Lincoln’s time.”
