Download or read book Disabling Obesity written by Paolo Capodaglio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity is currently regarded as one of the major health challenges of the developed world. Excess body weight is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and even psychiatric problems and is estimated to cause nearly 3 million deaths per year worldwide. Obesity is not necessarily associated with comorbidities: there are indeed metabolically healthy obese individuals. Thus, we need to consider individuals presenting simple with obesity separately from those at risk of developing or who have already developed complex clinical states potentially leading to disability. Comorbidities can tip the balance of independence in patients who already have functional limitations mainly due to the excess of mass itself or who develop conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where an abnormal metabolism of adipose tissue prevails. Morbid obesity with comorbidities leading to disability represents a real social and economic burden for National Health Systems worldwide. The presence of multiple and associated comorbidities often represents an obstacle to being admitted to hospitals for the treatment of metabolic diseases. On the other hand, clinical units with optimal standards for the treatment of pathological conditions in normal-weight patients are often structurally and technologically inadequate for the care of patients with extreme obesity. The aim of this book is to focus on the pathophysiological and rehabilitative aspects of disabling obesity, highlighting multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions as key to counteracting the disabling aspects of complicated obesity.

Book excerpt: The nature of memory for everyday events, and the contexts that can affect it, are controversial topics being investigated by researchers in cognitive, social, clinical, and developmental/lifespan psychology today. They discuss the mental structures and processes that operate in the formation of memory representations and their later retrieval and interpretation.

Book Memory and Testimony in the Child Witness

Download or read book Memory and Testimony in the Child Witness written by Maria S. Zaragoza and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1995 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume of carefully edited papers from psychological researchers in the United States and in Great Britain recounts the present state of this work. This is a useful over-view of the subject at today's date." --AR Brownlie in Science & Justice Comprehensive and carefully edited, this insightful volume is a must read for anyone involved with children's testimony. Leading scholars in the field examine and integrate research and practice on assessing and enhancing the quality of eyewitness testimony in children. The first section examines factors that contribute to the accuracy and reliability of such testimony, including the effects of extended delays, repeated questioning, and exposure to leading questions. The second section describes techniques that have been developed to improve the quality of children's testimony, such as anatomical dolls and interviewing techniques, and discusses their empirical and theoretical underpinnings. The final chapter focuses on policy issues, including psychological research to guide legal reform in accommodating child witnesses. Interdisciplinary in nature, Memory and Testimony in the Child Witness should be in the professional toolkit of all psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and attorneys working with children's testimony. It also serves as a text in any graduate level course focusing on eyewitness memory, children's competence as witnesses, or psychology and the law.

Over the past decade, the cognitive science orientation has become more and more integrated into the mainstream of cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence workers now feel comfortable thinking about psychological experimentation. This book collects in one place the research work which concentrates on covering topics in the representation, processing, and recall of meaningful verbal .materials. Several of the chapters are first reports of research; others are specially prepared reviews and elaborations of research reported previously. Here it is all together: Studies of scripts, plans, and higher-level knowledge structures; analyses of knowledge structure activation, of autobiographical memory, of the phenomenon of reminding, of the summarization of text, of explanations for events, and more.
