Book The Mathematics Teacher in the Digital Era

Download or read book The Mathematics Teacher in the Digital Era written by Alison Clark-Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-08 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the key issue of the initial education and lifelong professional learning of teachers of mathematics to enable them to realize the affordances of educational technology for mathematics. With invited contributions from leading scholars in the field, this volume contains a blend of research articles and descriptive texts. In the opening chapter John Mason invites the reader to engage in a number of mathematics tasks that highlight important features of technology-mediated mathematical activity. This is followed by three main sections: An overview of current practices in teachers’ use of digital technologies in the classroom and explorations of the possibilities for developing more effective practices drawing on a range of research perspectives (including grounded theory, enactivism and Valsiner’s zone theory). A set of chapters that share many common constructs (such as instrumental orchestration, instrumental distance and double instrumental genesis) and research settings that have emerged from the French research community, but have also been taken up by other colleagues. Meta-level considerations of research in the domain by contrasting different approaches and proposing connecting or uniting elements

Book Game Based Marketing

Download or read book Game Based Marketing written by Gabe Zichermann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harness the power of games to create extraordinary customer engagement with Game-Based Marketing. Gamification is revolutionizing the web and mobile apps. Innovative startups like Foursquare and Swoopo, growth companies like Gilt and Groupon and established brands like United Airlines and Nike all agree: the most powerful way to create and engage a vibrant community is with game mechanics. By leveraging points, levels, badges, challenges, rewards and leaderboards – these innovators are dramatically lowering their customer acquisition costs, increasing engagement and building sustainable, viral communities. Game-Based Marketing unlocks the design secrets of mega-successful games like Zynga’s Farmville, World of Warcraft, Bejeweled and Project Runway to give you the power to create winning game-like experiences on your site/apps. Avoid obvious pitfalls and learn from the masters with key insights, such as: Why good leaderboards shouldn’t feature the Top 10 players. Most games are played as an excuse to socialize, not to achieve. Status is worth 10x more than cash to most consumers. Badges are not enough: but they are important. You don’t need to offer real-world prizing to run a blockbuster sweepstakes. And learn even more: How to architect a point system that works Designing the funware loop: the basics of points, badges, levels, leaderboards and challenges Maximizing the value and impact of badges Future-proofing your design Challenging users without distraction Based on the groundbreaking work of game expert and successful entrepreneur Gabe Zichermann, Game-Based Marketing brings together the game mechanics expertise of a decade’s worth of research. Driven equally by big companies, startups, 40-year-old men and tween girls, the world is becoming increasingly more fun. Are you ready to play?

Book The Myth of Achievement Tests

Download or read book The Myth of Achievement Tests written by James J. Heckman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement tests play an important role in modern societies. They are used to evaluate schools, to assign students to tracks within schools, and to identify weaknesses in student knowledge. The GED is an achievement test used to grant the status of high school graduate to anyone who passes it. GED recipients currently account for 12 percent of all high school credentials issued each year in the United States. But do achievement tests predict success in life? The Myth of Achievement Tests shows that achievement tests like the GED fail to measure important life skills. James J. Heckman, John Eric Humphries, Tim Kautz, and a group of scholars offer an in-depth exploration of how the GED came to be used throughout the United States and why our reliance on it is dangerous. Drawing on decades of research, the authors show that, while GED recipients score as well on achievement tests as high school graduates who do not enroll in college, high school graduates vastly outperform GED recipients in terms of their earnings, employment opportunities, educational attainment, and health. The authors show that the differences in success between GED recipients and high school graduates are driven by character skills. Achievement tests like the GED do not adequately capture character skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, sociability, and curiosity. These skills are important in predicting a variety of life outcomes. They can be measured, and they can be taught. Using the GED as a case study, the authors explore what achievement tests miss and show the dangers of an educational system based on them. They call for a return to an emphasis on character in our schools, our systems of accountability, and our national dialogue. Download or read book Model Centered Learning written by Lingguo Bu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model-Centered Learning: Pathways to Mathematical Understanding Using GeoGebra is the first book to report on the international use of GeoGebra and its growing impact on mathematics teaching and learning. Supported by new developments in model-centered learning and instruction, the chapters in this book move beyond the traditional views of mathematics and mathematics teaching, providing theoretical perspectives and examples of practice for enhancing students’ mathematical understanding through mathematical and didactical modeling. Designed specifically for teaching mathematics, GeoGebra integrates dynamic multiple representations in a conceptually rich learning environment that supports the exploration, construction, and evaluation of mathematical models and simulations. The open source nature of GeoGebra has led to a growing international community of mathematicians, teacher educators, and classroom teachers who seek to tackle the challenges and complexity of mathematics education through a grassroots initiative using instructional innovations. The chapters cover six themes: 1) the history, philosophy, and theory behind GeoGebra, 2) dynamic models and simulations, 3) problem solving and attitude change, 4) GeoGebra as a cognitive and didactical tool, 5) curricular challenges and initiatives, 6) equity and sustainability in technology use. This book should be of interest to mathematics educators, mathematicians, and graduate students in STEM education and instructional technologies.
