Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fisherman. He fished the lakes and creeks near the family’s summer home at Walloon Lake, Michigan, and his first stories and pieces of journalism were often about his favorite sport. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, are all of his great writings about the many kinds of fishing he did—from angling for trout in the rivers of northern Michigan to fishing for marlin in the Gulf Stream. In A Moveable Feast, Hemingway speaks of sitting in a café in Paris and writing about what he knew best—and when it came time to stop, he “did not want to leave the river.” The story was the unforgettable classic “Big Two-Hearted River,” and from its first words we do not want to leave the river either. He also wrote articles for The Toronto Star on fishing in Canada and Europe and, later, articles for Esquire about his growing passion for big-game fishing. Two of his last books, The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream, celebrate his vast knowledge of the ocean and his affection for its great denizens. Hemingway on Fishing is an encompassing, diverse, and fascinating assemblage. From the early Nick Adams stories and the memorable chapters on fishing the Irati River in The Sun Also Rises to such late novels as Islands in the Stream, this collection traces the evolution of a great writer’s passion, the range of his interests, and the sure use he made of fishing, transforming it into the stuff of great literature. Anglers and lovers of great writing alike will welcome this important collection.

Book excerpt: The tranquil beauty of a morning sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean is in direct contrast to the savage acts taking place beneath the water's surface. Powerful tails propel half-ton blue marlin at nearly 50 mph, as their bills slash at baitfish. The razor-sharp teach of wahoo cut unsuspecting prey in half. And these predators become the hunted, when anglers venture forth in Offshore Pursuit. Whether you call blue water your regular fishing grounds or want to experience the thrill for the first time, don't leave success in the hands of Lady Luck. Knowledge and experience are necessary to produce results, and Offshore Pursuit has the information you need to catch big game fish in offshore waters. Book The Bluefin Tuna Fishery in the Bay of Biscay

Download or read book The Bluefin Tuna Fishery in the Bay of Biscay written by José Luis Cort and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is an original contribution to the knowledge on fishing and research associated with one of the most enigmatic fish of our seas: bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.). Based on available evidence, it reconstructs the possible methods used to catch large spawners in the Strait of Gibraltar thousands of years ago and describes the much more recent overfishing that led to a great reduction in the catches of the trap fishery on the area and the disappearance of the northern European fisheries. It is the first book to relate the overfishing of juvenile fishes in certain areas to the decline of large spawners in other very distant areas, revealing one of the main underlying causes of this decline, which has remained a mystery to the fishing sector and scientists alike for over 50 years. This finding should serve to prevent similar cases from arising in the future.

Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging book Dave Preble, who has spent a lifetime fishing the waters of the East Coast, provides a fascinating overview of the history and nature of both commercial and sport fishing in New England waters. He brings to life the glory days when fish were plentiful and new technology made huge catches commonplace. He hauntingly describes the havoc wrought by overfishing in the 1980's, and finally expresses the hope that a new ethical approach to nature and strict adherence to quotas will combine with the fortuitous resurgence of species believed near extinction. The scientific and technical discourse about the major species???cod, stripers, bluefish, tuna, sharks, etc.???is interspersed with exciting tales reminiscent of The Perfect Storm. Through it all, we experience firsthand a unique, highly dangerous lifestyle, always at the brink of disaster.
