Book excerpt: Set in the post-hippie/proto-disco "Me Decade" of the 1970s - when an imperiled 200-year-old America sought escape after such debacles as Vietnam, Watergate, and Nixon's resignation - FISHEYE chronicles Trish Thorpe's shocking adolescent double life and the traumatic adult years that followed. Trish starts her double life as a uniform-skirt, saddle-shoe wearing straight-A student, team captain of every sport at an elite girl's school. But by night and weekends, she is a chronic drug user and experienced sex partner of both men and women. In Trish's world, sex is random and rampant, none of it meaningful; and cocaine abounds, bought and sold by parents and teens alike. With her famous TV producer father, leaving her and her siblings in the unsteady hands of their despondent, alcoholic mother, a former minor star/dancer, Trish clings even tighter to the only love she knows from her few pals on the street. She copes by keeping her school lunch thermos full of Tequila Sunrise-and, most important, by hanging out with her best friend and lover, Linda, every chance she gets. Trish's harrowing coming-of-age exemplifies a "worst of times" in our society, a time in which parents were so busy playing out their own narcissistic, adolescent fantasies that many kids were left to fend for themselves, living by their own warped moral code. Some historians call the 70s "the decade better forgotten;" in the world of FISHEYE, Trish and her gang were the forgotten generation. As we follow the aftermath of Trish's coming-of-age, we learn about the effects of the "Me Decade" as they reverberate throughout her adult years. FISHEYE is a candid look at the lives of baby boomers; how many of them were shaped and how they progressed.

Book Graphical Fisheye Views of Graphs

Download or read book Graphical Fisheye Views of Graphs written by Manojit Sarkar and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "A fisheye lens is a very wide angle lens that shows places nearby in detail while also showing remote regions in successively less detail. This paper describes a system for viewing and browsing planar graphs using a software analog of a fisheye lens. We first show how to implement such a view using solely geometric transformations. We then describe a more general transformation that allows hierarchical, structural information about the graph to modify the views. Our general transformation is a fundamental extension to the early efforts in fisheye views."

Book excerpt: It is both an honor and a pleasure to hold the 27th Annual Meeting of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM 2005, at the Vienna U- versity of Technology, Austria, organized by the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Group. We received 122 contributions of which we were able to accept 29 as oral presentations and 31 as posters. Each paper received three reviews, upon which decisions were made based on correctness, presentation, technical depth, scienti?c signi?cance and originality. The selection as oral or poster presentation does not signify a quality grading but re?ects attractiveness to the audience which is also re?ected in the order of appearance of papers in these proceedings. The papers are printed in the same order as presented at the symposium and posters are integrated in the corresponding thematic session. In putting these proceedings together, many people played signi?cant roles which we would like to acknowledge. First of all our thanks go to the authors who contributed their work to the symposium. Second, we are grateful for the dedicated work of the 38 members of the Program Committee for their e?ort in evaluating the submitted papers and inprovidingthe necessarydecisionsupport information and the valuable feedback for the authors. Furthermore, the P- gram Committee awarded prizes for the best papers, and we want to sincerely thank the donors. Book Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections

Download or read book Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections written by Tania Banerjee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections describes the development of computer vision and machine learning-based applications for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the challenges encountered during their deployment. This book presents several novel approaches, including a two-stream convolutional network architecture for vehicle detection, tracking, and near-miss detection; an unsupervised approach to detect near-misses in fisheye intersection videos using a deep learning model combined with a camera calibration and spline-based mapping method; and algorithms that utilize video analysis and signal timing data to accurately detect and categorize events based on the phase and type of conflict in pedestrian-vehicle and vehicle-vehicle interactions. The book makes use of a real-time trajectory prediction approach, combined with aligned Google Maps information, to estimate vehicle travel time across multiple intersections. Novel visualization software, designed by the authors to serve traffic practitioners, is used to analyze the efficiency and safety of intersections. The software offers two modes: a streaming mode and a historical mode, both of which are useful to traffic engineers who need to quickly analyze trajectories to better understand traffic behavior at an intersection. Overall, this book presents a comprehensive overview of the application of computer vision and machine learning to solve transportation-related problems. Video Based Machine Learning for Traffic Intersections demonstrates how these techniques can be used to improve safety, efficiency, and traffic flow, as well as identify potential conflicts and issues before they occur. The range of novel approaches and techniques presented offers a glimpse of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for ITS research and development. Key Features: Describes the development and challenges associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Provides novel visualization software designed to serve traffic practitioners in analyzing the efficiency and safety of an intersection Has the potential to proactively identify potential conflict situations and develop an early warning system for real-time vehicle-vehicle and pedestrian-vehicle conflicts
