Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishes and Their Ways of Life Many keen fishermen have a particular devotion to that form of the art which is practised from a boat, and among their number I certainly include myself. I have Often practised their art in the past, and I practise it still. At any fit and proper time I am prepared to accompany a friend to river, lake, or sea, especially the sea. And so I find delights unknown to the Shore fisherman. I am brought closer to creatures which must be watched for if they are to be caught, and I have a greater Share in their existence. Fishing is no longer a sedate and tranquil form of recreation, no longer a mere stroll along a river bank, or an excuse for a nap; it becomes something more in the nature of hunting, of the chase. It has attractions and dangers all its own. But I do not always confine myself to that common type of fishing which is concerned with catching fish and nothing more. I am after something more than this, and I use special gear. As a naturalist I fish because I seek to garner all the living creatures that dwell in the waters so that I may know them all and learn all about them. The world of waters does not consist only of the fish we use for food. Together with these live other creatures having a place and usefulness of their own. And they are all worth knowing. So. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Fish Life The Story of Fish Life began ages and ages ago. Of this we are assured, not by any written record, but through the labours of those who spend their lives in exploring the dried basins of ancient lakes and seas, searching for the dead which may in cidentally have been preserved therein. The accumulated results of these explorations have provided us with a rich material for study in the shape of the hard parts, at least, of fishes of many kinds, the like of which, in many cases, we shall never see again. But some of these may be traced through a long series of geological forma tions, up to their living descendants, and serve to fill gaps otherwise incomprehensible. They enable us to weave out of the Whole of the collected evidence a story, as plainly as though we had transcribed it from the more familiar print. Book The Story of the Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Fishes Classic Reprint written by James Newton Baskett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fishes These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead, scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his Originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own Opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. I have described the eggs and the early life histories of a few of our commoner fishes, and how the adult fish is assisted in the battle for existence by concealing coloration and other devices. The habits Of a few marine animals have been dealt with, and finally I have explained in detail how the various photographs shown have been Obtained, in the hope that the information may be Of assistance to those interested in fish photo graphy. Book On the Food of Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Food of Fishes Classic Reprint written by F. Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Food of Fishes Having ascertained what minute forms or other descrip tions of life are employed for the nourishment of the fish, the inquiry branches off into what it is that governs and controls migration of these forms, as currents, soils, tempe rature, atmospheric vicissitudes, or some more minute food upon which they themselves subsist What are their enemies and their friends, and the conditions which favour the pre sence or absence of either class? Fishes may for convenience' sake be divided into preda cious, omnivorous, and herbivorous species, which necessitate an organisation suitable for each. Some are rapid swimmers in order to overtake prey, or escape from their foes others, which obtain their food by means of stratagem, are con structed for a slower mode of progression. But, for two reasons, I must omit the consideration of form first, because such are familiar to my hearers, and have represen tatives among the collections shown in this Exhibition and secondly, because such would unduly lengthen my paper. The various descriptions of teeth in fishes are more or less demonstrative of the great difference which must exist as to the food they consume some being prehensile, in order to assist in capturing and retaining their prey; others are more rounded for the purpose of crushing the shells upon which they mainly subsist. In carp the teeth are restricted to the throat, but the variations are too numerous to enter upon in this place. Book Life History and Habits of the Salmon Sea Trout Trout and Other Freshwater Fish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life History and Habits of the Salmon Sea Trout Trout and Other Freshwater Fish Classic Reprint written by P. D. Malloch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-History and Habits of the Salmon, Sea-Trout, Trout, and Other Freshwater Fish Fish and their ways have at all times engaged the attention of the writer, and the outcome of these studies has been the production of this volume. Within its pages he has endeavoured to clear up many points relative to the history of salmon and trout which have until lately remained a mystery. So many unsatisfactory theories have been advanced, that he determined to take full advantage of his position as Manager of the Tay Salmon Fisheries Co., Ltd., and do all in his power to investigate and further our knowledge regarding this most interesting branch of Natural History. With this end in view, the marking of smolts on their way to the sea, and their recapture afterwards, have been extensively carried on, and their weight, date of capture, and the particular run to which they belonged, have been carefully recorded. Hitherto it was believed that salmon smolts returned as grilse the same year as they went down to the sea, but a study of the smolt does not bear this out. Again, the writer shows that the large Spring salmon, the small Spring salmon, and also the "Summer Run," are on their first return from the sea, and not from the kelt grilse as many supposed. Evidence is also given that the so-called salmon bull-trout is not a trout, but a true salmon which has spawned, and consequently has become altered in appearance and white in the flesh. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many questions that fishermen ask themselves. Why do certain lures appeal to certain types of fish? How does the physical make-up of a type of fish affect its hunting strategy? Do fish learn to avoid lures and hooks? In Through the Fish’s Eye, these questions, and much more are answered. A classic book written by some of the best names in the business, Through the Fish’s Eye offers a new perspective on the art of fishing by breaking down the behavior of the fish and tying it into their biological make-up. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freshwater Fishes of the British Isles However, there are few species that do not interest the disciple of Walton, who captures the larger fish for sport and the smaller ones for bait, and it is to a large extent for the angler that this book has been written, although it is not a book about angling. It is an attempt to present in popular form the distinctive characters of our fresh water fishes, and to give a reliable account of the main features of their life-history. I believe that it will be found that this work is more complete than any of its kind that has yet appeared, for the different forms of Char and Whitefish receive detailed treatment, and natural hybrids are also included. In these groups I have been able to examine much larger series of specimens than have hitherto been available, thanks to the kindness of a number of correspondents who have sent me Char, Powan, Pollan, Cyprinoid hybrids, etc., and during the last few years I have described several new forms of considerable interest.
