Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Laws Fisheries, Exhibition: The Fishery Laws Let us begin at home with the law of freshwater fisheries. The questions with which it deals fall under the two general heads of who may fish, and how they may fish or, to put the questions as an individual fisherman might put them to himself: May I fish here at all? And, if so, on what con ditions and within what limits as to manner, time and other wise Restrictions, again, where they exist, may be of two classes; they may be (as most of them are) designed for the preservation of the fish and the benefit of the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Book An Open Creel Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Open Creel Classic Reprint written by Hugh Tempest Sheringham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Open Creel Fishing is very like the other pursuits of men, com pact of ill and good, the good being, as we think, not too lavishly bestowed on some of us. The season of any given angler (i except those prodigious fellows who never have a blank, who think in dozens and stones, and who cannot but come to a bad piscatorial end) is a calculable affair. Of the total number of his days, probably two-thirds will give him no results worth mentioning. Three-quarters of the rest will be of the type conveniently labelled as fair to middling. And there may be two or three days of really fine sport, days about which he at once writes articles. An article or so may be written about days of the second class, but about those of the first there is a grim silence. Hence the number of fish in a book on fishing. Francis Francis, I believe, once dryly remarked to an ecstatic angler who was eloquent upon the beauties of nature and the unimportance of slaughter that it doubtless was so, but he himself had noticed a kind of prejudice in favour of a brace of fish in the creel. He was quite right, of course. We all go out to catch fish. Circumstances make it harder for us to do so year by year; there are more of us, and waters are no more numerous, less rather, while fish grow daily more experienced. Therefore we probably do not expect to catch so much as did our fathers, and the sort of day which they would have regarded as middling is received by us in humble thankfulness as a glorious occasion. The standard of expectation is decidedly lower than it used to be.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fishing in American Waters

Download or read book Fishing in American Waters written by Genio C. Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishing in American Waters: A New Edition, Containing Parts Six and Seven, on Southern and Miscellaneous Fishes As it might not be deemed kind in me to inflict upon the reader my thousand reasons for writing and illustrating this book with pencil sketches copied from life, 1 will therefore merely state that my experience of many years in the practice of the gentle art, which has led me through so many scenes of beauty and loveliness, has made me wish that all the world might learn the enjoyment conferred by the practice of angling. I have endeavored to portray the recreations of the angler in America, with his implements and his game; adding a small tribute to the temperate and industrious class of men who follow for a livelihood the hazardous business of fishing on the broad seas. An outline of the progress of fish-culture in Europe and America is also given, with pencil sketches illustrative of the art of hatching and rearing fishes, including stairs and fish-passes for enabling fishes to surmount mill-dams and falls. The fishes of om coast and estuaries, and the peculiar methods adopted for their capture, form not only a sealed book to Europeans, but to those anglers in America also who confine their recreations to fresh-water attractions. Each game fish affords a distinct interest, with peculiarities worth studying. My sketches may lack artistic finish, but possess the merit of correct outline; and in the words of Raphael, "The outline is the picture." The reader may be assured that fishing, whether for recreation or gain, entices its votaries to unexplored sources of revenue and pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishery Bulletin of the Fish and Wildlife Service, 1956-58, Vol. 57 Meanwhile, information about the growth and habits of these fish must be gathered as a basis for an intelligent program for restoration and manage ment of the fishery. In the study of the lake trout, it is imperative first to assess the reliability of ages determined from scales of the fish to validate them for the many uses to which age statistics and calculated lengths, based on measurements of scales, are put in population studies. Although determination of the age of lake trout from scales was considered difficult by Royce,3 Cooper, and Fuller and by Miller and Kennedy several investigators, including Greeley (1934 and Fry and Kennedy Fry (1949, and Van Oosten have read them with apparent assurance, but without establishing the validity of their readings.
