This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands yellowfin sole trawl fishery is one of a six part series of reports summarizing catch perunit effort (CP[JE) and bycatch data extracted from the National Marine Fisheries Service Observer Program North Pacifìc (NORPAC) database. Other reports cover the other flatfìsh (including rock sole), pollock (bottom), pollock (midwater), Pacific cod, and miscellaneous individual skippers and vessel owners maintain their bycatch rates for prohibited species (halibut, herring, red king crab, and bairdi Tanner crab) within guidelines established by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Data from the period 1981 - 1989 are summarized by month, year, and geographic location (one-half-by-one-degree latituddlongitude blocls). Five l2-month series of charts are presented, each of which shows the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands region divided into one-half-by-one degree latituddlongitude blocks on which bar graphs illustrating average CPUEs or bycatch rates are superimposed. These chart series provide a visual overview of the data through time and space. Other sections list the actual numerical data associated with each bar graph and provide tables summarizing the data by month and year. Tables listing the Month/Block/Yearr records wÍth the highest CPUEs and bycatch rates also are provided.

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Download or read book Fish to 2020 written by Christopher L. Delgado and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seemingly inexhaustible oceans have proved to be finite after all. Capture of wild fish have leveled off since the mid-1980s, and many stocks of fish are fished so heavily that their future is threatened. And yet the world's appetite for fish has continued to increase, particularly as urban populations and incomes grow in developing countries. Aquaculture--fish farming--has arrived to meet this increased demand. Production of fish from aquaculture has exploded in the past 20 years and continues to expand around the world. But will aquaculture be sufficient to provide affordable fish to the world over the next 20 years? And what environmental and poverty problems will aquaculture face as it expands? Using a state-of-the-art computer model of global supply and demand for food and feed commodities, this book projects the likely changes in the fisheries sector over the next two decades. As prices for most food commodities fall, fish prices are expected to rise, reflecting demand for fish that outpaces the ability of the world to supply it. The model shows that developing countries will consume and produce a much greater share of the world's fish in the future, and trade in fisheries commodities will also increase. The authors show the causes and implications of these and other changes, and argue for specific actions and policies that can improve outcomes for the poor and for the environment.
