Book Data and Management Strategies for Recreational Fisheries with Annual Catch Limits

Download or read book Data and Management Strategies for Recreational Fisheries with Annual Catch Limits written by National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine recreational fishing is a popular activity enjoyed by more than 9 million Americans annually and is a driver of the American ocean-or blue-economy. To ensure that fish populations are not overexploited, the NOAA Fisheries' Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) monitors recreational catch through a variety of in-person, telephone, mail-in, and other surveys. NOAA Fisheries' management of recreational catch also must take into account annual catch limits (ACLs) established to prevent overfishing for all managed species in federal waters. While MRIP has worked to improve recreational catch surveys over the past decade, the surveys were never designed to meet the demands of in-season management of ACLs. In some cases, estimates of harvest have triggered accountability measures such as early season closures and reductions in future recreational ACLs, which have been a source of contention with the recreational fishing community. This report presents approaches for optimizing MRIP data and complementary data for in-season management and considers alternatives for managing recreational fisheries with ACLs to better serve both social and economic management objectives.

Book Reinventing Fisheries Management

Download or read book Reinventing Fisheries Management written by T.J. Pitcher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judged by a dismaying track record and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is certainly a candidate for calls for reinvention, with many of the world leaders in this area holding the view that no fishery has ever been properly understood or managed. With fisheries science in a state of flux, this extremely important book seeks a new paradigm that will place this flux of ideas in perspective and help us to choose those that will make fisheries management work. The book was planned at a symposium of over 100 fishery researchers at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and is organized into five parts: Why does Fisheries Science Need Reinventing?; New Policies; The Role of the Social Sciences; Ecology; Modelling. Carefully integrated and edited by three of the world's leading fishery scientists, this stimulating book should find a place on the shelves of all fishery scientists throughout the world. It will be an invaluable reference source to those studying fish biology, fisheries and oceanography and all those involved in fisheries policy decisions in government and university research establishments.

Book Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries written by Daniel Pauly and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries is the first and only book to provide accurate, country-by-country fishery catch data. This groundbreaking information has been gathered from independent sources by the world's foremost fisheries experts. Edited by Daniel Pauly and Dirk Zeller of the Sea Around Us Project, the Atlas includes one-page reports on 273 countries and their territories, plus fourteen topical global chapters. Each national report describes the current state of the country's fishery; the policies, politics, and social factors affecting it; and potential solutions. The global chapters address cross-cutting issues, from the economics of fisheries to the impacts of mariculture. Extensive maps and graphics offer attractive and accessible visual representations.

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Book 2016 Annual Report to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission United States of America

Download or read book 2016 Annual Report to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission United States of America written by Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents estimates of annual catches of tuna, billfish, and other highly migratory species (HMS), and vessel participation during 2011–2015 for fisheries of the United States and its Participating Territories operating in the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). All statistics for 2015 are provisional. Statistics for 2014 have been updated from those reported provisionally in the submission of 2013-2014 U.S. fishery statistics for the western and central Pacific Ocean (NOAA, NMFS 2015). Statistics for 2011–2013 have not been updated. For the purposes of this report, the WCPO is defined as the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Statistical Area. For the most part, U.S. estimates of catch by weight are estimates of retained catches due to lack of data on weights of discarded fish"--Page 2 [doi:10.7289/V5/DR-16-038 (http://dx.doi.org/10.7289/V5/DR-16-038)]
