Book Fisheries Development

Download or read book Fisheries Development written by Bjørn Hersoug and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All coastal states have ambitions for the development of their fisheries. Not only do fisheries play an important role in sustaining peoples' livelihoods, but also in many countries in the north and the south, fisheries are important for the national economy. Moreover, fisheries are part of the process of globalisation, which, for better or worse, means that fisheries issues and problems have implications that extend beyond the level of the nation state. Fisheries development: the institutional challenge is the result of a long-term research programme on fisheries in developing countries. The book explains how fisheries development strategies changed over the years, from simple ideas of modernising the production equipment (boats and gear) to complex programmes involving management and institution building. It highlights the role of the state and the community in resource management and the challenges offered by new concepts such as ecosystem management in a Third World setting. Book jacket.

Book Fisheries Subsidies Sustainable Development and the WTO

Download or read book Fisheries Subsidies Sustainable Development and the WTO written by Anja von Moltke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fisheries sector is in crisis. Inappropriate subsidies to the fishing industry are a key factor responsible for worldwide fisheries depletion, overcapitalization and ecosystem degradation. There is an urgent need for an international mechanism to promote the appropriate restructuring of fisheries subsidies in order to create a more sustainable industry. In recent years the leading international forum charged with providing such a mechanism has been the World Trade Organization (WTO).This book explains why and how the reform of fisheries subsidies has become one of the most concrete and potentially successful international efforts to achieve global environmental, economic and developmental policy coherence. It describes the history and current status of the discussions at the WTO, drawing on UNEP's key documents and reflecting on the major issues. Accompanying the book are downloadable resources containing full-text versions of the most important source material used in the publication. The book is aimed at a broad stakeholder audience, including policymakers in the fields of trade, fisheries, environmental economics and international environmental governance, as well as academics and others looking for an overview of the fisheries subsidies issue and an introduction to its technical components.Published with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Book Sustainable Fishery Systems

Download or read book Sustainable Fishery Systems written by Anthony Charles and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive attempt to adopt an 'integrated' interdisciplinary approach to the study of fisheries. Fisheries are discussed as holistic 'systems', with emphasis on their structure, operation and dynamics. The book's interdisciplinary approach is applied to an analysis of problems faced in pursuing 'sustainable fisheries', with emphasis on six dominant themes: sustainability, uncertainty, complexity, conflict, fishing rights and the nature of management. Within this discussion, several major directions in current fishery thinking are explored, notably the precautionary approach, the ecosystem approach, co-management, and robust management for resilient fisheries.

Book Ecology Sustainable Development and Accounting

Download or read book Ecology Sustainable Development and Accounting written by Seleshi Sisaye and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting literature has viewed sustainability in terms of social, economic and environmental performances. There have been concerns that the relationship between sustainability, accounting and organizational performance cannot be explained unless we can deduce patterns of administrative behaviour that chronicle management practices. Ecology, Sustainable Development and Accounting argues that, despite the broader social and economic development dimensions of sustainability and the limitations of its extension to corporate and organizational behaviour; an ecological framework is capable of providing the overall societal and community chronologies that describe corporate sustainable operations. Drawing examples from international development and federal government organizations, this book documents the link between ecology, corporate sustainable development, and sustainability accounting and reporting. It draws together the literature from several disciplines to elaborate the contribution of the ecological approach to sustainable development in the accounting literature. This book will be of particular interest to students, academics and practitioners in the areas of environmental studies, ecological economics, sustainable development studies, and social and environmental accounting. The sociological and anthropological perspectives make this book the first of its kind to apply the population ecology of sociology to both the sustainability and accounting literature.

Book Sustainable Fisheries Management and International Law

Download or read book Sustainable Fisheries Management and International Law written by Abdullah-Al Arif and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the legal and policy frameworks for marine fisheries management and examines the efficiency of the institutions responsible for the formulation, implementation and enforcement of marine fisheries laws and policies in Bangladesh. Sustainable management of marine fisheries is a complex, multi-dimensional and multi-stakeholder process that entails sustainable use of marine living resources and conservation of marine biodiversity. Offering a critical analysis to these frameworks that play a crucial role in the conservation and management of fish stocks in areas within and beyond national jurisdiction, this book examines inadequacies and implementation gaps in the legislative, policy and institutional frameworks that contribute to the unsustainable exploitation of marine fish stocks in Bangladesh. It recommends law and policy reform for conservation and sustainable management of marine fisheries in Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal.

Book The Small Scale Fisheries Guidelines

Download or read book The Small Scale Fisheries Guidelines written by Svein Jentoft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-10 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2014, FAO member-states endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines). These Guidelines are one of the most significant landmarks for small-scale fisheries around the world. They are comprehensive in terms of topics covered, and progressive, with their foundations based on human rights and other key principles. It can be anticipated that implementing the SSF Guidelines, whether at local, national, or regional levels, will be challenging. This book contains in-depth case studies where authors discuss the extent to which the Guidelines can help improve the realities of small-scale fishing men and women globally and make their livelihoods and communities more secure. This will require policy intervention and innovation, along with contributions of civil society organizations and academia. However, most of all it will necessitate the empowerment of fishing people so that they can become active participants in decision making on matters where their well-being and human rights are at stake. By endorsing the SSF Guidelines, states have committed themselves to support and facilitate this development. This book asks whether states can successfully “walk the talk,” and provides advice as to how they can do so. The collection of case studies sets the platform for an interactive dialogue space for researchers, policy makers, civil society and small-scale fishing communities to start the conversation about the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines at local, national, regional and global levels. An added value is that it helps add focus to our work as civil society activists involved in ensuring the application of the SSF Guidelines. Naseegh Jaffer – General Secretary, World Forum of Fisher People (WFFP) This collection offers many ways in which institutions enabling small-scale fisheries can protect and promote sustainability, food security, customary tenure, self-management, and market access, while fostering such benefits as ecosystem-based management, protected areas, incorporation of local knowledge, and poverty alleviation. You will want to put this book in the hands of policy-makers and practitioners immediately -- and for years to come. Evelyn Pinkerton – Professor, Simon Fraser University, Canada

Book Sustainable Aquaculture

Download or read book Sustainable Aquaculture written by Faisal I. Hai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about important relevant recent research topics in sustainable aquaculture practices. A critical assessment of the sustainable fishing methods and the aspect of sustainable aquaculture feed is presented in this volume. A special focus has been given to socio-economic and environmental assessment of aquaculture practices and analysis of carbon footprint under an intensive aquaculture regime. Aquaponics as a niche for sustainable modern aquaculture has been highlighted. The effect of use of pharmaceuticals to prevent fish disease on the surrounding marine environment is an emerging area of concern, and a critical discussion on this aspect is included in the book. The spread of organic waste and nutrients released by fish farms to natural water bodies has raised considerable concerns. Therefore the methods to prevent their dispersion and removal (treatment) have been comprehensively covered in this book. This book is an essential read for academician, researchers, and policy makers in the field of aquaculture.
