Book Fish Trade Among Mediterranean Countries

Download or read book Fish Trade Among Mediterranean Countries written by Loretta Malvarosa and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to analyse the trade in fish and fishery products in the Mediterranean basin. With reference to the fisheries sector, it appears that the influence of market forces on the management of fisheries (and vice-versa) is increasing. After an overview of recent trends in fishery production, the study focuses on the exchange of fishery products, based on data from UN-Comtrade and FAO and Eurostat data. The core of the study comprises an analysis of the fish trade between the two sides of the Mediterranean basin, the EU and the non-EU countries. At the European level, the trade in fish products between the northern and the southern Mediterranean is of particular importance when considering recent in production and consumption, as well as the legal framework covering both the production and trade sides of the fishery sector. The cross-sectoral analysis of fishery production and trade provides a number of conclusions and lessons for the future of fishery management.

Book MARKET INTEGRATION BETWEEN WILD AND FARMED FISH IN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Download or read book MARKET INTEGRATION BETWEEN WILD AND FARMED FISH IN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market integration occurs when prices among different locations or related goods follow similar patterns over time. Current knowledge on market integration between aquaculture and wild-caught fish is based on a small number of species and markets. Most studies show the existence of market integration between wild and farmed conspecifics. However, there are some ambiguous results for European seabass and gilthead seabream in southern European countries in the literature. In this study, we investigate the existence of market integration between wild and farmed conspecifics for European seabass and gilthead seabream as well as several other key species in southern European countries.

Book The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2018

Download or read book The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 edition of The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries (SoMFi 2018), the flagship publication of the GFCM, provides a comprehensive overview of regional and subregional trends in Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries. Bringing together data and indicators submitted by GFCM contracting parties and cooperating non- contracting parties on stock status, national catches, fleet and socio-economic aspects as well as information obtained from other sources, SoMFi 2018 aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience and support decision-making in fisheries. SoMFi 2018 is divided into eight chapters. The first analyses the current composition of the fishing fleet, including information on fleet capacity, vessel types and age classes. Next comes a detailed breakdown of overall capture fishery production with comparisons of the latest figures to data from previous years, highlighting significant changes and trends. The report then looks at what this means for regional economies and for the livelihoods of the people who depend on the fisheries sector. As small-scale fisheries make up a large majority of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, they receive special focus. SoMFi 2018 also provides the most detailed assessment yet of the state of fishery resources in the region. It shows the current status of the stocks, including those most at risk from overfishing, and looks at related issues like discards and incidental catches of vulnerable species. The report then highlights GFCM’s strategic efforts to build long-term sustainability, as it works with its stakeholders to sustainably manage fisheries and improve coastal livelihoods across the region. Finally, SoMFi 2018 concludes with an overview of the important role fisheries have to play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, maintaining healthy ecosystems and productive fisheries.

Book Italian Annotated Bibliography of Tuna Tuna like and Billfish Species

Download or read book Italian Annotated Bibliography of Tuna Tuna like and Billfish Species written by Antonio Di Natale and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian-annotated bibliography on tunas, tuna-like and billfish species is a sort of unicum, because for the very first time, it provides annotation in English for all papers published by Italian authors over the centuries in various languages. Taking into account that these species are an essential component of the Italian and Mediterranean culture, thousands of authors published a very high amount of papers since historical times, on various themes and subjects. These large fish species are nowadays not only essential elements of the marine trophic chain, but also important components of human seafood and the related fishery economy. This book makes all these papers internationally available for all scientists, helping them in their research activities and the annotations facilitate the searching work by species and keywords.

Book Present Market Situation and Prospects of Meagre Argyrosomus Regius as an Emerging Species in Mediterranean Aquaculture

Download or read book Present Market Situation and Prospects of Meagre Argyrosomus Regius as an Emerging Species in Mediterranean Aquaculture written by Marie-Christine Monfort and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document draws the picture of the existing market of meagre and describes the possible routes for development. Meagre culture started in France and in Italy in the late '90s and is developing in the Mediterranean Region, jumping from a few tonnes in 2 000 to over 10 000 tonnes expected in 2010, highlighting the appearance of a new aquaculture species on the market. Indeed, based on its aquaculture characteristics, meagre has the potential to become a mass market species, moving from the present position of a niche species with a limited production directed to selected market segments. The paper recommends some actions to be undertaken to consolidate good conditions for future growth and to reduce commercial risks.

Book The Fishing Net and the Spider Web

Download or read book The Fishing Net and the Spider Web written by Claudio Fogu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of Mediterranean imaginaries in one of the preeminent tropes of Italian history: the formation or 'making of' Italians. While previous scholarship on the construction of Italian identity has often focused too narrowly on the territorial notion of the nation-state, and over-identified Italy with its capital, Rome, this book highlights the importance of the Mediterranean Sea to the development of Italian collective imaginaries. From this perspective, this book re-interprets key historical processes and actors in the history of modern Italy, and thereby challenges mainstream interpretations of Italian collective identity as weak or incomplete. Ultimately, it argues that Mediterranean imaginaries acted as counterweights to the solidification of a 'national' Italian identity, and still constitute alternative but equally viable modes of collective belonging.

Book Transition towards an ecosystem approach to fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book Transition towards an ecosystem approach to fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea written by Vasconcellos, M., Unal, V. (eds.) and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FAO has promoted the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) as an appropriate framework for the sustainable development and management of fisheries worldwide. With a view to contribute to the identification of lessons and good practices for EAF implementation, this publication documents nine case studies that attempted to put into practice some of the key principles and tools of the approach in the Mediterranean Sea. The case studies were selected to cover a broad range of contexts including smallscale and industrial fisheries operating at local, national and sub-regional scales. It was not within the scope of the publication to evaluate the level of implementation of the ecosystem approach. A specific tool for monitoring implementation is proposed and exemplified. Case studies were analysed with a view to draw preliminary lessons regarding the enabling factors that facilitated the progress made as well as the challenges faced in the transition towards EAF-based management systems. Attention is drawn to key enabling conditions such as favourable policies, legislation and regulatory frameworks, the existence of regional mechanisms for cooperation, favourable market dynamics and social processes, and the relatively low complexity of the fishery systems analysed. A set of factors emerged that contributed to progress during implementation, such as the clear definition of fishing rights, the enhancement of mechanisms for compliance, scientific monitoring and adaptation of management measures, as well as the explicit consideration of biological and socioeconomic aspects in management actions. Further progress in the transition towards sustainable management systems is hampered by external and internal factors. External factors are related, for instance, to environmental changes, the poor regulation and control of competing sectors, consumer behaviour and the governance environment. Issues such as stakeholder representation, knowledge gaps and the availability of sustainable sources of funding are among common internal factors. The authors also discuss how slow progress in the implementation of management plans can generate discredit with the institutions and add additional challenges for any future initiatives to engage stakeholders in participatory management. The case-based results and lessons of how the ecosystem approach to fisheries was considered, developed and implemented in the fisheries discussed in this publication not only contribute to the documentation of current practices in the Mediterranean but may also guide future attempts to further develop the field.
