Book Fishponds in farming systems

Download or read book Fishponds in farming systems written by A.J. Zijpp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout the last century, specialisation and intensification were buzz words for farmers in the Western world. However, this approach has not resulted in sustainable development as evidenced by the fact that scientists now need to create technologies to reduce negative impacts. In this book we demonstrate that an alternative exists. Case studies from Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam show that integration and diversification increase both farm productivity and farmers’ incomes. By adopting a participatory approach, farmers and scientists identified a range of technologies that strengthen the positive impacts of integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems for the environment. This book is a collection of refereed papers on a controversial subject in agricultural development. Arguing that sustainability of fish culture in ponds needs a new paradigm - feed the pond to grow fish - two chapters focus on nutrient cycling in such systems. Another chapter makes the case for breeding Nile tilapia for resource poor farmers and presents practical options to avoid the pitfalls that arise from natural tilapia mating in low-input ponds. The book contains chapters on livelihood and development aspects and ends with a general discussion completing the picture of the integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems. Overall it composes a review which addresses one of the key issues of the new century: how to sustainably produce food without compromising environmental integrity."

Book Leveraging Gender Youth and Social Networks for Inclusive and Transformative Livestock Production in the Tropics and Subtropics

Download or read book Leveraging Gender Youth and Social Networks for Inclusive and Transformative Livestock Production in the Tropics and Subtropics written by Stefan Burkart and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social research has provided critical insights into understanding gender and generational gaps and the ways that power relations create differentiated access to agricultural and livestock technologies and services. Many of these technologies and services, such as improved feed options (grass-legume associations, silvo-pastoral systems), improved animal genetics, health and welfare, grazing management and associated water and soil health, and manure management, have the potential to improve livelihoods, sustainability, food security, and generational transfer dynamics. Their adoption contributes to mitigating many of the impacts the livestock sector has on the environment through, for example, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, increasing biodiversity, restoration, and land sparing. Likewise, their adoption helps producers adapt to climate change.

An introductory overview chapter provides a summary account based on the format used for each of the case presentations, and sets out general recommendations for further development action on a region-wide basis.
