Book excerpt: * Published in North and Central America by the American Fisheries Society. * Available exclusively from CABI Publishing in all other territories of the world. * Second edition of a leading fish culture manual * Relevant for both private and public fish culture * Vital as a training tool and as a day to day hatchery resource This second edition expands and updates the original Fish Hatchery Management, the preeminent fish culture manual, originally published in 1982, which has been used in universities and training centres to train new generations of culturists. The new edition has been completely rewritten by experts to include major advances in hatchery operation, in practical knowledge about raising high-quality fish, and in optimal use of cultured fishes in management programs. This up-to-date volume is greatly needed as a training tool and day-to-day hatchery resource. Like the first edition, the book includes a great deal of information about particular species, but its focus remains on the requirements and practical operation of culture systems. The new edition covers advances in production, water issues, transportation, stocking, open systems, controlled systems, semi-controlled systems, broodstocks and spawning, nutrition and feeding, fish health, and special considerations. Authors have developed chapters for relevance to both private and public fish culture.

Book Fisheries Management Plan for Stocked Waterbodies

Download or read book Fisheries Management Plan for Stocked Waterbodies written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This document has two primary intended purposes. First, this plan is intended to provide Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT) Resident Fish Division Hatchery Program (Program) staff with clear and concise management metrics and evaluation methods for the eight waterbodies on the CCT Reservation that receive the vast majority of resident hatchery fish releases. Secondly, this plan is intended to provide funding agencies and associated review teams with clear evidence that the mitigation monies, provided for in-kind replacement of lost access to anadromous fisheries resources upstream of Chief Joseph Dam, are being utilized in a rigorous, thoughtful, efficient, and responsible manner. The management plan describes clear and measureable metrics and evaluation methods that will enable CCT staff to provide desirable resident fishery resources while optimizing use of mitigation funding and minimizing genetic and ecological risk."--Preface.

Book Fish Hatchery Management

Download or read book Fish Hatchery Management written by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The format of Fish Hatchery Management is functional: hatchery requirements and operations; broodstock management and spawning; nutrition and feeding; fish health; fish transportation. We have tried to emphasize the principles of hatchery culture that are applicable to many species of fish, whether they are from warmwater, coolwater, or coldwater areas of the continent. Information about individual species is distributed through the text; with the aid of the Index, a hatchery manager can assemble detailed profiles of several species of particular interest. In the broad sense, fish culture as presented in Fish Hatchery Management encompasses not only the classical "hatchery" with troughs and raceways (intensive culture), but also pond culture (extensive culture), and cage and pen culture (which utilizes water areas previously considered inappropriate for rearing large numbers of fish in a captive environment). The coolwater species, such as northern pike, walleye, and the popular tiger muskie, traditionally were treated as warmwater species and were extensively reared in dirt ponds. These species now are being reared intensively with increasing success in facilities traditionally associated with salmonid (coldwater) species.

Book Biological Assessment and Management Plan

Download or read book Biological Assessment and Management Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a two-year period, fishery co-managers and Chelan, Douglas, and Grant Public Utiltity Districts (collectively call the Mid-Columbia PUDs) developed this biological assessment and hatchery management plan for the anadromous salmonids in the Columbia River upstream of the Yakima River confluence. The fishery co-managers include National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of the Yakama [sic] Indian Nation, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. This was a consensus plan by fish co-managers for development, operation, and evaluation of anadromous salmonid hatcheries inthe Columbia River upstream of the Yakima River confluence.

Book An Evaluation of the Medvejie Creek Salmon Hatchery for Consistency with Statewide Policies and Prescribed Management Practices

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Medvejie Creek Salmon Hatchery for Consistency with Statewide Policies and Prescribed Management Practices written by Mark E. Stopha and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The salmon hatchery program in Alaska is governed by policies, plans, and regulations that emphasize protection of wild salmon stocks. A rotational series of hatchery evaluations will examine each hatchery for consistency with those policies and prescribed management practices. The evaluation includes a review of hatchery management plans and permits, an assessment of each hatchery program's consistency with statewide policies, and recommendations to address any deficiencies found. Management plans and permits were examined to determine whether they were current, consistent with each other, and accurately described hatchery operations. This report reviews the Medvejie Creek Hatchery located in Silver Bay near Sitka, Alaska. The hatchery was constructed in 1981 by the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association. The hatchery produces chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta for commercial harvest, coho salmon O. kisutch and Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha for sport and commercial harvest and pink salmon O. gorbuscha for mitigation for removing water from Medvejie Creek. The facility releases juveniles from the hatchery and other release sites near Sitka. All fish incubated at Medvejie Creek Hatchery are otolith-marked differentially by release site. Fish are sampled when commercial fisheries occur to assess hatchery contribution. Spawning escapement goals for naturally spawning salmon stocks in systems near the hatchery and release sites have been met in most years of hatchery returns. The basic management plan for the hatchery should be updated with a description of current permit conditions and operations.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 59 pages. This report reviews the Hidden Falls Hatchery located in Chatham Strait in Southeast Alaska. The hatchery was constructed in 1981 by the State of Alaska, which retains ownership of the facility. The hatchery produces chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta for commercial harvest, and coho salmon O. kisutch and Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha for sport and commercial harvest. The facility releases juveniles from the hatchery and other release sites. All chum salmon incubated at Hidden Falls Hatchery are thermal otolith-marked by release site. A portion of the coho and Chinook salmon releases are marked with coded wire tags. Fish are sampled weekly in the commercial fisheries to assess hatchery contribution. Spawning escapement goals for naturally spawning salmon stocks in systems near the hatchery and release sites have been met in most years of hatchery returns. The basic management plan for the hatchery should be updated with a description of current permit conditions and operations.
