Book Fish passage technologies protection at hydropower facilities

Download or read book Fish passage technologies protection at hydropower facilities written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this report is technologies for fish passage around hydropower generation facilities and protection against entrainment and turbine mortality. Emphasis is given to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-licensed hydropower projects where fish protection is a subject of controversy and congressional interest due to the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA). Thus institutional issues related to FERC-relicensing are also discussed. (Major points of controversy are high-lighted in box 1.1).

Book Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration

Download or read book Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration written by Ulrich Schwevers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of current systems for fish protection and downstream migration. It offers the first systematic description of the currently available technologies for fish protection at hydropower intakes, including accurate and timely data collected by the authors and other researchers. It describes how to design and test them in agreement with the guidelines established from the EU Water Framework Directive. The book includes important information about fish biology, with a special focus on swimming and migration mechanisms. It offers a robust bridge between concepts in applied ecology and civil hydraulic engineering, thus providing biologists and hydraulic engineers with an authoritative reference guide to both the theory and practice of fish protection. It is also of interest for planners, public authorities as well as environmental consultants

Book Fish Versus Power

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew D. Evenden
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2004-05-03
  • ISBN : 9780521830997
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Fish Versus Power written by Matthew D. Evenden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish versus Power is an environmental history of the Fraser River (British Columbia) and the attempts to dam it for power and to defend it for salmon. Amid contemporary debates over large dam development and declines in fisheries, this book offers a case study of a river basin where development decisions did not ultimately dam the river, but rather conserved its salmon. Although the case is local, its implications are global as Evenden explores the transnational forces that shaped the river, the changing knowledge and practices of science, and the role of environmental change in shaping environmental debate.

Book Marine Renewable Energy Technology and Environmental Interactions

Download or read book Marine Renewable Energy Technology and Environmental Interactions written by Mark A. Shields and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now widely recognized that there is a need for long-term secure and suitable sustainable forms of energy. Renewable energy from the marine environment, in particular renewable energy from tidal currents, wave and wind, can help achieve a sustainable energy future. Our understanding of environmental impacts and suitable mitigation methods associated with extracting renewable energy from the marine environment is improving all the time and it is essential that we be able to distinguish between natural and anthropocentric drivers and impacts. An overview of current understanding of the environmental implications of marine renewable energy technology is provided.

Book Preliminary Assessment of Fish Entrainment at Hydropower Projects Fish Stories

Download or read book Preliminary Assessment of Fish Entrainment at Hydropower Projects Fish Stories written by Federal Energy Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with fish entrainment at hydropower projects. Entrainment is important to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) because we must evaluate the effects of turbine entrainment on fish populations. We must decide, with assistance from resource agencies, whether to require licensees to take protective measures to reduce entrainment. The purpose of the report is to use recent entrainment studies to identify trends that might, in some cases, reduce the need for site-specific entrainment studies. The entrainment studies reviewed also provide a basis to suggest methods of improving future studies. Costs and effectiveness of alternatives to reduce entrainment provide aquatic resource protection options. The report focuses on entrainment studies east of the Mississippi River because more studies are available for this area. Information on protective measures includes sites from the entire country. This report provides guidance to Division of Project Review staff in their review of applications for hydropower licenses. It is also valuable to resource agencies and hydropower licensees/applicants. We remind the reader that this is a preliminary summary assessment, and new information may alter the suggestions presented here.
