Book Tax Systems and Tax Reforms in South and East Asia

Download or read book Tax Systems and Tax Reforms in South and East Asia written by Luigi Bernardi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the present status, recent tax reforms and planned tax policies in some South and East Asia countries since the 1990s. The evidence is presented in a user friendly manner, but at the same time uses technically sophisticated methods. The main countries studied are China, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand. It is unique for being the first systematic treatment of the topic: hitherto, the information available has been widely dispersed and difficult to access. It should prove to be a natural companion to two previous books on taxation published by Routledge and also edited by Luigi Bernardi.

Book Fiscal Policy and Management in East Asia

Download or read book Fiscal Policy and Management in East Asia written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing fiscal policy—the revenues and spending of an individual nation—is among the most challenging tasks facing governments. Wealthy countries are constrained by complex regulation and taxation policies, while developing nations often face high inflation and trade taxes. In this volume, esteemed economists Takatoshi Ito and Andrew K. Rose, along with other leading experts, examine the problems and challenges facing public finance in East Asian developing countries as well as the United States and Japan. Fiscal Policy and Management in East Asia explores the inefficient tax systems of many developing countries, the relationship between public and private sector economic behavior, and the pressing issue of future obligations that governments have undertaken to provide pensions and health care for their citizens. Featuring both overviews and analyses of the countries discussed, this book will be of value to economists and policymakers seeking to understand fiscal policy in a global context.

Book Fiscal Frameworks and Financial Systems in East Asia

Download or read book Fiscal Frameworks and Financial Systems in East Asia written by Wendy Dobson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1998-10-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the two key financing constraints that firms must face: taxation and finance. The taxation analysis focuses on how tax systems in selected Asian economies affect growth and the relative competitiveness of foreign and domestic enterprises. It outlines key features of the systems and provides a set of guidelines for potential foreign investors as to how these systems compare with each other (and with those in Canada and the United States) and predict future developments (including financial innovation and the internet). The study of financial frameworks focuses on corporate finance and analyzes the relationship between financing patterns and the level of development of securities markets and financial liberalization in the region. It focuses on the issue of how firms finance investments and the extent to which they depend on retained earnings and funding obtained through the market. Both studies include Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. Both also consider the implications of taxation for savings and investment flows in domestic economies and across borders-and the implications of public sector demand for savings for corporate financing constraints.

Book Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers in Asia

Download or read book Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers in Asia written by Paul J. Smoke and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 302 pages. Critically examining selected intergovernmental transfers in three large Asian countries--India, Pakistan, and the Philippines--this study highlights lessons from these countries that those intending to reform their intergovernmental transfer systems might apply. Each country is considered in light of the accepted principles and international practices of intergovernmental transfers. A summary is provided that synthesizes the results from case studies, examining how they meet individual country objectives and how they relate to broader international experience.

Download or read book Tax and Development written by Satoru Araki and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxation is increasingly in the limelight as a development agenda item, particularly with the emergence of the G20 as the premier international forum. This volume highlights the challenges faced by the Asia and Pacific region regarding tax policy and administration. Partly reflecting the diversity of the region, the region's voice still appears to be low in comparison with that of other regions such as Europe and Latin America. This book introduces ADB's and ADBI's active roles in assisting developing countries with respect to taxation. In addition, this book is an attempt to narrow the gap in understanding between development specialists and tax specialists. This publication, an anthology by contributors who have been involved in ADB's and ADBI's activities on fiscal policy and taxation in various capacities is classified into three groups: (i) bird's-eye overviews that discuss tax and development issues in Asia and the Pacific; (ii) country case studies that present theoretical policy analysis of a particular economy; and (iii) another set of country case studies that share practical experiences regarding the tax system of a particular economy.

Book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia

Download or read book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia written by Stijn Claessens and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian countries should consider the benefits of opening their financial service sectors more quickly - at the same time that they are liberalizing capital accounts and deregulating domestic financial markets. The internationalization of financial services - eliminating discrimination between the treatment of foreign and domestic providers of financial services and removing barriers to the cross-border provision of financial services - is of global interest, especially in Asia. Most of Asia limits the entry of foreign financial firms much more than otherwise comparable countries do. Empirical evidence for Asia and elsewhere suggests that this slows down institutional development and that, as a result, it costs more to provide financial services. Asian countries could benefit from accelerating the opening of the financial services sector, in conjunction with the further liberalization of capital accounts and domestic deregulation of financial markets.Apart from other benefits, internationalization helps build more robust, efficient financial systems by introducing international practices and standards; by improving the quality, efficiency, and breadth of financial services; and by allowing more stable sources of funds. The ongoing WTO negotiation of financial services under GATS gives countries the opportunity to commit to opening their financial sectors. Safeguards can be built into the process, and the liberalization can be phased in gradually. This paper - a product of the Economic Policy Division, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network - is part of a larger effort in the network to study financial reform in developing countries. The paper was written during the summer of 1997, before the East Asia financial crisis and before the conclusion of the WTO negotiations in December 1997.
