Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine novice special education teachers' perceptions on the effectiveness of pre-service training. The primary focus aimed to determine perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the overall quality of pre-service special education certification programs, as well as the perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the aspects of the special education training programs that could be improved in order to increase the overall quality of the certification experience. Six school districts in central and northeastern Pennsylvania participated in the study. Fourteen novice special educators began the online survey composed of demographic, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions, with twelve completing the study. Of the twelve who completed the study, five volunteered to participate in an interview. The study revealed that overall, novice special education teachers felt adequately prepared in the areas of teaching, assessment, professional credentials and employment, professional development, professional colleagues, para-educations, parents and families, and case management; however, there is still room for improvements to be made in pre-service training programs. Data collected from the open-ended and interview questions supported the perception that novice special education teachers felt they may need more training to handle special education paperwork, as well as to provide support in specific areas of special education which they did not feel sufficiently trained, such as life skills support, emotional support or hearing/vision support. Findings also suggested that teacher preparation programs could include more field experiences throughout the duration of the program in a variety of areas and settings.

The book ends with two articles on teacher preparation by Hardman, Stoff, Aung and Elliott who examined the pedagogical practices of mathematics teaching in primary schools in Myanmar, and Zein who focuses on teacher learning by examining the adequacy of preservice education in Indonesia for preparing primary school English teachers. The contributing authors’ rich perspectives in different educational, geographical and socio-cultural contexts would serve as a valuable resource for policy makers, educational leaders, individual researchers and practitioners who are involved in teacher education research and policy. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Education.

Book excerpt: In the Fall of 1998 a unique Professional Development School (PDS) Partnership was established between a local School District and University, whereby, pre-service and classroom teachers focused on the utilization of best academic practices to meet the needs of special education students in inclusive settings. This study examined the perceptions of pre-service and classroom teachers regarding the influence of their participation in a PDS partnership on their knowledge and implementation of best academic practices when working with students with disabilities. The results indicated that the participants (a) had a solid knowledge based related to best practices, (b) highlighted Cooperative Learning, Differentiated Instruction, Collaboration, and Proactive/Positive Behavior Management as the most effective practices (c) felt that the exposure of pre-service teachers, trained in best practices, to classroom teachers, had a positive impact on instruction, and (d) felt that interpersonal skills were strengthened as a result of the PDS.

Book excerpt: Since 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted, the United States public school system and teacher preparation programs have been trying to prepare teachers and preservice teachers to teach in inclusive classrooms. Teacher preparation programs across the country started to include an introductory course on special education as a requirement for general education degree programs. Research in the 90s has shown these semester long introductory courses improved the beliefs and attitudes preservice teachers have towards inclusion and students with disabilities; however, the same research articles that prove the increase in positive attitudes also recommend teacher preparation programs need to integrate special needs topics more into the general education courses. Through the review of eight different research articles, there will be an examination of the different approaches teacher preparation programs have used to help preservice teachers feel prepared to teach in an inclusive classroom. The articles are split amongst three different categorized themes. The first approach was the implementation of an introductory special education course. The second approach was the addition of field experience on top of the semester long introductory special education course. The last approach focused on integrating special education and inclusion topics into the general education courses.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the integration of family involvement in the courses and field experiences in an undergraduate special education program. This study also explored preservice teachers perceptions about what they learned in their program and the perceptions, and understandings of pre-service teachers regarding collaboration with families based on their past experiences with their families. This study used qualitative research methods to answer questions about perceptions of pre-service teachers perceptions of collaborating with families and the extent to which their perceptions are influenced by their own family backgrounds as well as their perceptions about what they learned in their program. In order to address the goals and related research questions of this study, the research design will be a descriptive case study. Interviews with six preservice teachers and two professors and document analysis used in this study as a source of data. Three themes emerged from the data. The themes are as follows: perceptions of preservice teachers about family-school collaboration, preservice teachers past experiences when they were at K-12 in terms of family involvement and teacher education program experiences of preservice teachers.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored teacher perceptions of disproportionality in special education referrals in relation to race and gender and teacher preparedness to make referrals to special education services. This study was conducted at three Pennsylvania school districts. Two districts were considered rural/suburban, while one district was identified as suburban. Participants were 36 elementary, middle, and high school general education teachers who responded to a researcher-designed electronic survey consisting of multiple-response, Likert scale, and open-ended questions. In addition, three respondents participated in individual interviews with the researcher. The findings of this study indicate that general education teachers have variable responses to how race, gender, and their own preparedness influence referrals of students to special education services. Data showed a need for training for both inservice and preservice teachers in bias in order to allow for an understanding of factors that can influence referral rates of students to special education services. Data also indicated a need for educating all professional instructional staff in disproportionality and whether or not it occurs within their district. Finally, findings revealed the need for teacher preparation and teacher inservice programs to have a heavier emphasis on training educators to work with students with disabilities.

Book excerpt: A disproportionate number of Black students with disabilities experience exclusionary discipline practices (e.g., suspensions and expulsions) in K-12 public schools. This disparity persists, regardless of the severity of identified problem behavior, the school's average socio-economic status, or the type of public school attended. Given that teacher education programs (TEPs) are pivotal training grounds for pedagogical and philosophical formation, it is crucial for TEPs to demonstrate accountability for building critical consciousness of the factors that produce and perpetuate this disparity. Gaining a fuller understanding of how pre-service special education teachers craft their perceptions of problem behavior during their TEPs may help to rectify this problem. This post-intentional phenomenological study explores the ways pre-service special education teachers from a special education teacher education program in the State of Illinois craft their perceptions of problem behavior and how social identity influences these perceptions. Participants (n = 38) completed three tasks: 1. Social Identity Wheel; 2. Aspects of Identity Questionnaire-IV; and 3. Video Elicitation. Following the three activities, I randomly selected six participants (n = 6) to sit with me for semi-structured interviews. Findings showed a patchwork of ways perception of problem behavior is crafted - the primary way stemming from personal childhood experiences. The influence of social identity on perception was inconclusive. Results have implications for special education teacher educators who are committed to complying with Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE) newly adopted Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards for teacher education programs. Results also have implications for school personnel interested in following the recently released guidance from the Department of Education that helps public K-12 schools avoid discriminatory use of discipline against students with disabilities.
