I have taken 30 credits worth of CLEP exams and I've passed them all by using your study guides. I actually purchased one of your study guides and failed my first test. I didn't fail because of your guide though, I failed because I didn't manage my time effectively and I ran short. I looked at your study guide after failing though, and a lot of the information on your study guide was very relevant to what was on the test. So, I tried again with a different test and a different study guide of yours. I passed. This pattern continues for 30 credits. I graduate on June 9th thanks to you guys, so I wanted to say thank you. The guides were worth every penny. Thanks, -John S.****I would like to thank you for your study guides. I will be graduating in December with two bachelor degrees and CLEP helped me get there quickly. I gained 36 credits through CLEP and your study guides helped me through almost all of them. I can honestly say that I would not have passed many of the tests without your guides. Great products. Thanks!! -Erin W.****

Book College Credit for Writing in High School

Download or read book College Credit for Writing in High School written by Kristine Hansen and published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte). This book was released on 2010 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Kristine Hansen and Christine R. Farris, this collection explores various options that students have for "taking care of" the first-year college writing requirement, including AP tests, concurrent enrollment/dual-credit courses, the International Baccalaureate diploma, and early college high schools. The first-year college writing requirement is a time-honored tradition in almost every college and university in the United States. Many high school students seek to fulfill this requirement before entering college through a variety of programs, such as Advanced Placement tests, concurrent enrollment programs, the International Baccalaureate diploma, and early college high schools. The growth of these programs raises a number of questions, including: Is this kind of outsourcing of instruction to noncollege providers of educational services something to be resisted or embraced?, What are the possible benefits and detriments to students, their parents, their teachers, and the educational institutions?, What standards should be met with respect to student readiness, teacher preparation, curricular content, pedagogical strategies, and learning outcomes? How can we create a seamless K-14 educational system that effectively teaches writing to students in the transition from adolescence to adulthood? Contributors to this volume--including high school teachers, professors at community colleges and universities, and administrators at both the secondary and postsecondary levels--explore the complexity of these issues, offer best practices and pitfalls of such a system, establish benchmarks for success, and lay out possible outcomes for a new educational landscape.

Book In the Archives of Composition

Download or read book In the Archives of Composition written by Lori Ostergaard and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Archives of Composition offers new and revisionary narratives of composition and rhetoric's history. It examines composition instruction and practice at secondary schools and normal colleges, the two institutions that trained the majority of U.S. composition teachers and students during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing from a broad array of archival and documentary sources, the contributors provide accounts of writing instruction within contexts often overlooked by current historical scholarship. Topics range from the efforts of young women to attain rhetorical skills in an antebellum academy, to the self-reflections of Harvard University students on their writing skills in the 1890s, to a close reading of a high school girl's diary in the 1960s that offers a new perspective on curriculum debates of this period. Taken together, the chapters begin to recover how high school students, composition teachers, and English education programs responded to institutional and local influences, political movements, and pedagogical innovations over a one-hundred-and-thirty-year span.

Download or read book Why They Can t Write written by John Warner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important challenge to what currently masquerades as conventional wisdom regarding the teaching of writing. There seems to be widespread agreement that—when it comes to the writing skills of college students—we are in the midst of a crisis. In Why They Can't Write, John Warner, who taught writing at the college level for two decades, argues that the problem isn't caused by a lack of rigor, or smartphones, or some generational character defect. Instead, he asserts, we're teaching writing wrong. Warner blames this on decades of educational reform rooted in standardization, assessments, and accountability. We have done no more, Warner argues, than conditioned students to perform "writing-related simulations," which pass temporary muster but do little to help students develop their writing abilities. This style of teaching has made students passive and disengaged. Worse yet, it hasn't prepared them for writing in the college classroom. Rather than making choices and thinking critically, as writers must, undergraduates simply follow the rules—such as the five-paragraph essay—designed to help them pass these high-stakes assessments. In Why They Can't Write, Warner has crafted both a diagnosis for what ails us and a blueprint for fixing a broken system. Combining current knowledge of what works in teaching and learning with the most enduring philosophies of classical education, this book challenges readers to develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge, and habits of mind of strong writers.

Book Empowering the Community College First Year Composition Teacher

Download or read book Empowering the Community College First Year Composition Teacher written by Meryl Siegal and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges in the United States are the first point of entry for many students to a higher education, a career, and a new start. They continue to be a place of personal and, ultimately, societal transformation. And first-year composition courses have become sites of contestation. This volume is an inquiry into community college first-year pedagogy and policy at a time when change has not only been called for but also mandated by state lawmakers who financially control public education. It also acknowledges new policies that are eliminating developmental and remedial writing courses while keeping mind that, for most community college students, first-year composition serves as the last course they will take in the English department toward their associate’s degree. Chapters focusing on pedagogy and policy are integrated within cohesively themed parts: (1) refining pedagogy; (2) teaching toward acceleration; (3) considering programmatic change; and (4) exploring curriculum through research and policy. The volume concludes with the editors’ reflections regarding future work; a glossary and reflection questions are included. This volume also serves as a call to action to change the way community colleges attend to faculty concerns. Only by listening to teachers can the concerns discussed in the volume be addressed; it is the teachers who see how societal changes intersect with campus policies and students’ lives on a daily basis.

Book Effective Expression

Download or read book Effective Expression written by Charles Elbert Rhodes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Expression: A Textbook on Composition and Rhetoric for the Four Years of High School and the First Year of College In Narration, we have emphasized motivation, for it is the secret of plot construction, and have dwelt at length upon short-story writing and upon dramatiza tion, because they furnish practice in handling situa tions. In Description, we have, as our definition shows, made more than is customary of the emotional point of view and of informal description, for they are both vital to a real understanding of the subject. We have treated Exposition as the commonest form of discourse and tried to make it eminently practical by applying it to literary criticism, the making of abstracts, ex plaining situations in novels, and to class recitations. In Argumentation, we have distinguished between the informal and formal types, and have given sufficient logical tests to insure facility in determining what con stitutes real evidence, such as may be offered as proof. We have especially emphasized the need and the method of finding the main issues, which is the vital thing in argumentation. While we have used the terms Narration, Description, Exposition, and Argumentation, we have been careful to point out that they are academic distinctions used to classify the various forms of the finished product, and that they are not to be used mechanically, nor to be considered like the water-tight compartments of a ship with no inter-communication.
