This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps in the History of England The history of England! We need not ask where or what England is. Every boy and girl can tell as that England is the largest of the three parts of the island lying west of the conti nent of Europe, called Great Britain. Everyone knows that England is the center of that great empire upon whose terri tory the sun never sets. Agriculture and manufactures flourish there; good roads, schoolhouses, churches, and hospitals abound. England is a civilized, a Christian nation. Once England was far different. Centuries ago the Christian religion had not reached its shores; the signs of civilization did not exist; hunt ing and fighting were the most common employments of its peo ple. Indeed, it was not England; the inhabitants were not Eng lishmen, nor did they speak a language at all like English. The island then had the name of Britain, and the people were called Britons. The story of the wonderful changes that have made early Britain the England of to-day is the history of England. Download or read book First Steps in the History of England written by Arthur May Mowry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps in the History of England In writing this book the author has followed the same plan as in "First Steps in the History of Our Country," and, as in that book the history of the United States is told by relating the life-stories of the men who made that history, so in this volume the events of English history are described by making prominent the men who best represent their periods. In English history, however, it is impossible to make the stories strictly biographical, because of the extent of time covered and the necessity for giving a continued narrative in order to bring out clearly the cause and effect of the steps taken by the people to enlarge their liberties. At the close of each chapter are suggestions for topical study, which will be helpful in preventing close repetition of the text in recitations. These topics are followed by thought questions, which are designed to bring out some hidden truth contained in the chapters, and to promote discussion and individual thought. These questions are in no sense "seek further" questions, for nearly all can be answered after a thoughtful study of the text. It is believed that teachers and pupils will find pleasure and profit by thus searching below the covering of words and grammatical phrases. The book is sent out into the world in the hope that the lives of these patriotic Englishmen may inspire boys and girls to higher ideals of citizenship, and to a greater desire to help the unfortunate and the oppressed. Thus not only all classes of people, but all nations, will be brought into a closer bond of brotherhood, and injustice and discontent will pass away. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Download or read book A Child s History of England Classic Reprint written by Charles Dickens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of England Thus, by little and little, strangers became mixed with the islanders, and the savage Britons grew into a wild, bold people almost savage still, especially in the interior of the country, away from the sea, where the foreign settlers seldom went but hardy, brave, and strong. The whole country was covered with forests and swamps. The greater part of it was very misty and cold. There were no roads, no bridges, no streets, no houses that you would think de serving of the name. A town was nothing but a collection of straw-covered huts, hidden in a thick wood, with a ditch all round, and a low wall made of mud, or the trunks of trees placed one upon another. The people planted little or no corn, but lived upon the flesh of their flocks and cattle. They made no coins, but used metal-rings for money. They were clever in basket work, as savage people often are and they could make a coarse kind of cloth, and some very bad earthenware. But in building fortresses they were much more clever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory History of England My own view is that English History should be an inheritance of childhood; that its legends and its romance should grow into our thoughts from very early years, and should expand themselves with the expansion of our minds; that we should feel History and dream of it rather than learn it as a lesson. Happy is that boy who, having so grown up with the story of his country, can people the fields and lanes of his home with the figures of the past; can hear the clatter of Rupert's horsemen down his village street, and can picture the good monks catching baskets-full of trout in the stream (there were more trout in it before the Reformation) wherein he is failing to get a rise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain and Short History of England, for Children: In Letters From a Father to His Son, With a Set of Questions at the End of Each Letter The following Letters are little else than a reprint of a very short History of England, first published in the "Cottager's Monthly Visitor." A few alterations, omissions, and additions, have been made, for the sake of adapting the remarks to children of all classes of society, as well as those for whom they were originally written. The same plainness of style, which was the chief recommendation of the Letters in the "Monthly Visitor," has still been attempted to be preserved. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Sports of England This is the first step to history; for what is history but the account of what people said and did long ago, related by them to their children, and by them told again to others? Inquiries into the customs of our ancestors, which, from length of time, have become obscure, constitute a portion of the amusement and occupation of the antiquary. It was to the ardour with which he followed these researches, to his accurate' memory, and to the keen judgment which he exercised about them, joined to the delightful manner in which he imparted his knowledge to others, that Sir Walter Scott owed his great cele brity as the poet and historian of chivalry, the chronicler of ancient manners, and the devoted lover of brown heath and shaggy wood. You have all, perhaps, read some Of his works, and 1 am sure they must have charmed you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
