Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bounded on the north by the Little Satilla River from neighboring Glynn County and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, Camden County's southern boundary at the St. Marys River separates Georgia from Florida. Dating from a 1766 land grant, port of St. Marys and Camden County have faced a challenging past, present, and future. Camden's growth and development have been driven by businessmen, adventurers and opportunists, determined "wild swamp Crackers," and hardy, self-reliant, God-fearing men and women. Accompanied by Jonathan Bryan, a planter with an insatiable appetite for virgin tracts of land, Georgia's third and last Royal Governor James Wright visited Buttermilk Bluff in June 1767 and envisioned a city. St. Marys was born, and its street names reflect the surnames of the 20 founding fathers. While the county seat was removed from a quaint St. Marys on more than one occasion, today, the garden spot of Woodbine serves as the seat of county government. Formerly the rice plantation of J.K. Bedell, this small city shares a symbiotic relationship with port of St. Marys and the "City of Royal Treatment" at Kingsland. The history of the county, with its three main towns as well as the outlying, rural areas, unfolds in striking photographs from days gone by. Preserved within the pages of this treasured volume, images reveal Camden and its people in times of tragedy and triumph.

Download or read book The Musical Life of Nineteenth Century Belfast written by Roy Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Johnston and Declan Plummer provide a refreshing portrait of Belfast in the nineteenth century. Before his death Roy Johnston, had written a full draft, based on an impressive array of contemporary sources, with deep and detailed attention especially to contemporary newspapers. With the deft and sensitive contribution of Declan Plummer the finished book offers a telling view of Belfast?s thriving musical life. Largely without the participation and example of local aristocracy, nobility and gentry, Belfast?s musical society was formed largely by the townspeople themselves in the eighteenth century and by several instrumental and choral societies in the nineteenth century. As the town grew in size and developed an industrial character, its townspeople identified increasingly with the large industrial towns and cities of the British mainland. Efforts to place themselves on the principal touring circuit of the great nineteenth-century concert artists led them to build a concert hall not in emulation of Dublin but of the British industrial towns. Belfast audiences had experienced English opera in the eighteenth century, and in due course in the nineteenth century they found themselves receiving the touring opera companies, in theatres newly built to accommodate them. Through an energetic groundwork revision of contemporary sources, Johnston and Plummer reveal a picture of sustained vitality and development that justifies Belfast?s prominent place the history of nineteenth-century musical culture in Ireland and more broadly in the British Isles.

Download or read book Two Acres of Irish History written by Eamon Phoenix and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friar's Bush is Belfast's oldest Christian Site. The quality of ancient mystery surrounding this old walled graveyard at Stranmillis has long fascinated historians. There is a tradition of a link with St. Patrick and strong evidence of a medieval friary on the site; it also served as a 'penal refuge' for the local Catholic community up to 1769. Indeed, in its manifold historical associations and monuments, Friar's Bush reflects the landmarks in local, Ulster and Irish history throughout the ages - frm the 'Penal Era' to the Irish Volunteers, from the Catholic Emancipation to the Great Famine and fromt he growth of Belfast to the First World War. This book has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of the 'Local Study' component of the Northern Ireland History Curriculum at Key Stage 3. It traces the exciting story of Friar's Bush and Belfast from the rich store of evidence available--artifacts, maps, letters, newspaper reports, ballads, and even paintings. A major focus is the transition from 'Penal Era' to 'Golden Age' in Belfast as symbolised by the opening of Old St Mary's in 1784.
