This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne During the week of April 22-29, 1956, impressive services marked the dedication of the fifth house of worship of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne. Distinguished guests, clergy, and prominent laymen united to observe the one-hundred-twenty fifth anniversary of the founding of the church in the Summit City. In 1956 the congregation numbered twenty-five hundred members, who had contributed two million dollars to construct the beautiful modified early American edifice at Wayne and Webster streets. The area of Fort Wayne then encompassed twenty-eight square miles, and the population approximated one hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants in forty-six thousand homes. The story of the humble beginnings and the difficult under takings of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church and their successors constitutes a record of faith and courage in this com munity in the nineteenth century. To understand fully the numer ous obstacles and vicissitudes experienced by the Church and its congregation, the reader must turn back the pages of local history to the early decades of the last century. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lessons of Our National Sorrow: A Discourse Delivered in the First Presbyterian Church, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, on the Sabbath Morning, April 16th, 1835, Succeeding the Death of Abraham Lincoln Within the past few hours this great nation has exchanged the voice of thanksgiving and rejoicing for the bitter cry of anguish and lamentation. The long struggle to maintain the national integrity, against such perfidy and barbarity as mightbelong to the world's darkest ages, seemed drawing to a close: the chief strongholds of rebellion had been subdued, the chief armies defeated and surrendered, and the chief traitor had betaken himself to ignoble flight: our military authorities had already issued orders to stay the recruiting of our forces, and even to lessen the numbers of those already in the service; and everything seemed to give token of the speedy return of peace. But, though no change has occur red in the position of our victorious hosts, how suddenly has gloom and night fallen upon these scenes of light and glad ness. Your ears have already heard the tingling tidings, and I have no need to dwell upon the particulars. The man who seemed to be for the times, so recently honored by the voice of the, people in a second call to the high station he had filled with distinguished ability in a most difficult and trying period, so recently crowned with the honors of military suc cess - the President of the United States - has fallen by the hand of an assassin! Death is come up unto our windows and is entered into our palaces.-j er. Ix: 21. The beauty of Israel is slain upon the high places. How are the mighty fallen. - 2 Sam. Ii: 19. Book The First Presbyterian Church

Download or read book The First Presbyterian Church written by Arista Hoge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Presbyterian Church: Staunton, Virginia The call of God was not vague, therefore, nor general, but a summons to seek a specific blessing the fathers had had and the descendants had lost. It was an appeal to return to the commandments and covenant of Sinai, and to resume the pursuit of the true religion which had been revealed from Heaven. It was called the good way because it was right. It was known to be right because it had been divinely revealed and certified. It carried the imprimatur of Heaven and was stamped with the great seal of the kingdom of God. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scorn ful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season his leaf also shall not wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
