Book Downtown by History and Choice

Download or read book Downtown by History and Choice written by Peter Graham Fish and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Presbyterian Church of Durham, North Carolina, was founded on New Year's Eve 1871 as the Durham Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. The congregation's first house of worship, a modest frame structure, stood on the site occupied by the present church. First Church, beginning in the late nineteenth century, established, funded, and staffed industrial missions near local textile and tobacco mills to become the "Mother Church" for three present day Presbyterian churches, and, recently, in association with other Presbyterian churches, to establish a Hispanic Presbyterian congregation. Abroad, First Church launched an ambitious foreign mission program and thereafter cared for refugees and embraced immigrants. First Presbyterian Church has been a welcoming church that has, through the circling years, endeavored to meet the challenge of adjusting to the contending forces of tradition and change as they have impacted and continue to impact worship, music, education, mission, and church government. This is the church's story.

Also to recount interesting events and to recreate the atmosphere as far as possible in which they occurred. In writing I have mentioned many persons who assisted in the program. There were many others without whose assistance we could not have carried on and whose names are not mentioned, but whose services are warmly remembered and deeply appreciated however those who contributed to the success of our work really need no words of mine, for they have their reward in the joy of their service and in the knowledge of a Job well done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to live the Christian life with conviction? Richard Lischer insists that Christians have a stake in the political and social conflicts that are dividing our culture. In whatever circumstance, Christians are obligated to tell the truth about what it means to be a follower of Jesus. In Just Tell the Truth, Lischer explores seasons of suffering, hope, and triumph in the light of the gospel. Drawing upon Scripture and the lives of both well-known and anonymous Christians, he helps his readers imagine what truthful living looks like. While remaining biblically and theologically rooted, the sermons eloquently engage the present moment, showing how Christian conviction has a place in the controversial realms of politics, racial justice, and the COVID-19 crisis. The nourishing meditations in Just Tell the Truth align the rhythm of the gospel with the curvature of human experience, empowering Christians to find the heart of God in what is too often a heartless world.
