Book First Measurement of the Photon Structure Function F 2 with the ZEUS Detector

Download or read book First Measurement of the Photon Structure Function F 2 with the ZEUS Detector written by Frank S. Chlebana and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the methods and results of the first measurement of the proton structure function F2 by the ZEUS collaboration. The ZEUS detector is one of two large general purpose detectors at the electron-proton colliding facility HERA located at DESY in Hamburg Germany. HERA provides collisions of 26.6 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons, resulting in a center of mass energy an order of magnitude higher than previous fixed target electron scattering experiments. The kinematics at HERA allows the measurement of F2 in a region o f x ana Q2 phase space previously unexplored. A total integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb-1, collected during the fall of 1992, was used for the measurement of F2. The results reported here extend the measurement of F2 to lower values of x by two orders of magnitude. In the parton model the behavior of F2 at low x is highly dependent on the unknown gluon distribution and the absence of data leads to significantly different expectations of the neutral current cross sections at low x. A measurement of F2 at low x constrains the gluon distribution. The results show a strong rise at low x.

Book Phenomenology of Particle Physics

Download or read book Phenomenology of Particle Physics written by André Rubbia and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for a two-semester Master's or graduate course, this comprehensive treatise intertwines theory and experiment in an original approach that covers all aspects of modern particle physics. The author uses rigorous step-by-step derivations and provides more than 100 end-of-chapter problems for additional practice to ensure that students will not only understand the material but also be able to apply their knowledge. Featuring up-to-date experimental material, including the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN and of neutrino oscillations, this monumental volume also serves as a one-stop reference for particle physics researchers of all levels and specialties. Richly illustrated with more than 450 figures, the text guides students through all the intricacies of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in an intuitive manner that few books achieve.

Book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging

Download or read book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging written by Claus Grupen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-08 with total page 1251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.

  • Pages : 616 pages

Download or read book Astroparticle Physics written by Claus Grupen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the branch of astronomy in which processes in the universe are investigated with experimental methods employed in particle-physics experiments. After a historical introduction the basics of elementary particles, Explains particle interactions and the relevant detection techniques, while modern aspects of astroparticle physics are described in a chapter on cosmology. Provides an orientation in the field of astroparticle physics that many beginners might seek and appreciate because the underlying physics fundamentals are presented with little mathematics, and the results are illustrated by many diagrams. Readers have a chance to enter this field of astronomy with a book that closes the gap between expert and popular level.
