Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Logic The recent developments in logical theory fol lowing upon the contributions of Boole, Pierce, and Schroder have seemed to place the subject be yond the reach of the average student and even in most instances beyond the reach of the technically equipped philosopher. The result has been to re duce the attention that was formerly given to ele mentary instruction in logic and to displace the traditional course from its originally dominant posi tion in the university curriculum. The conviction is abroad that the ancient organon is so far inferior to the modern instrument perfected by the critical labors of Peano, Frege, Russell, and others, that it no longer deserves the attention once bestowed upon it. These objections the writer has endeavored to meet, in the first instance by introducing no symbols whatever, save the ones employed by traditional logic itself, so that the treatment may be followed by any intelligent reader, and secondly by keeping modern developments always in mind while following the traditional order of treatment. Finally, he has met the recent contention that the classical system does not hold true in all of its parts, by showing in the last chapter of this work that. Book An Introductory Logic Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introductory Logic Classic Reprint written by James Edwin Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Logic The present\edition represents a somewhat thorough revision of this book, which had remained substantially unchanged since its first publication, eleven years ago. Changes of more or less importance have been introduced into every chapter; new paragraphs have been added to many of the sections; and, especially in the Second Part, many of the sections have been entirely rewritten. Chap ter XIII. Of the old text, on the Problem of Induction, has been expanded into two chapters; and, throughout this Part, an attempt has been made to bring the treatment of the various inductive methods into closer relation with a general philosophical theory. The chapter with which the text formerly closed, Rational and Empirical Theories, has been replaced by one entitled The Unification of Knowledge. It has seemed important to conclude the discussion of the nature of thought with some statement of the meaning and function of the main categories which experience involves, and, in this connection, to Indicate in a general way the necessity of a philosophical interpreta tion of the results of the special sciences. The number of problems and examples of reasoning to be analyzed has been more than doubled in the belief that fresh material of this nature will prove welcome to teachers of the subject. Book Elementary Logic Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Logic Classic Reprint written by Alfred Sidgwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Logic Books on Logic Often begin with what professes to be a definition Of the Science. And if by a definition all that is meant is a vague general statement of aim or purpose, that is easy to give; the aim Of Logic, always and every where, is to' study the difference between good and bad reasoning. Even the loftiest and least mundane kind Of Logic cannot really escape from this purpose; for what interest could there be in ideally perfect truths if no one was ever in the least danger of forgetting them? It was the liability of mankind to reason badly that first called Logic into existence, and that still makes the study worth while; and to confess its lack Of power to detect bad reasoning, or to boast of a lack Of interest in doing this, would be fatal to its claims. The general aim Of Logic, then, is clear. But real difficulties begin as soon as we try to get the scope and method of the Science into its definition, for thereby we run'a risk Of begging the very important ques tion whether a particular limitation of scope, or a particular method, is a help or a hindrance in achieving the aim. There is no general agreement on this point. Indeed that is a mild way of putting it, for we live' in times when there is a widespread and growing revolt against certain Old methods and Old limitations Of Logic which have come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Notions of Logic: Preparatory to the Study of Geometry Moreover, the negative words not, no, &c., have two kinds of mean ing which must be carefully distinguished. Sometimes they deny, and nothing more: sometimes they are used to affirm the direct contrary. In cases which ofi'er but two alternatives, one of which is necessary, these amount to the same thing, since the denial of one, and the affirm ation of the other, are obviously equivalent propositions. In many idioms of conversation, the negative implies affirmation of the contrary in cases which offer not only alternatives, but degrees of alternatives. Thus, to the question, Is he tall?' the simple answer, No, ' most frequently means that he is the contrary of tall, or considerably under the average] But it must be remembered, that, in all logical reasoning, the negation is simply negation, and nothing more, never implying affirmation of the contrary.
