It is far from niv wish to make great scholars of little boys and girls. I have aimed in this book merely to give the young student such a knowledge of Botany as is adapted to his years. Some may wonder Why I did not unlock another door or two for my little friends. I can only say, in regard to the matter, that I found it necessary to stop somewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analytical Class-Book of Botany, Designed for Academies and Private Students: In Two Parts; Part I. Elements of Vegetable Structure and Physiology; Part II. Systematic Botany, Illustrated by a Compendious Flora of the Northern States The Primary class-book of Botany (one of the present series), is intended to supply this great want of a common-school book, which shall be at once clear, simple, and thorough in its details, so as to render the science attractive Without diluting it. It consists substantially of the first part of the Present Volume. It is unencumbered with useless technicalities and synonyms, and is so simple and direct to the point, that any Teacher of even common penetration and address can enter at once into the spirit of the lessons; and thus, while he is teaching, be preparing himself along witli the scholar, to enter the analytical course of study, should his taste incline that way. Teachers will observe that in the references to the Illustrations, contained in the Text, the num ber of the Plate is given but once hence all figures are included in the one last mentioned, till another is introduced. Part II., or systematic botany, containing the flora, has some important points for an ele mentary work, among which are the simplicity and directness of the synopses, the clearness and ful ness of the descriptions, the nice distinctions observed between nearly-allied species, and a very high degree of simplicity and clearness in the analyses. Book First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology

Download or read book First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology: Illustrated by Over 360 Wood Engravings, From Original Drawings This book is intended for the use of beginners, and for classes in the common and higher schools, - in which the elements of Botany, one of the most generally interesting of the Natural Sciences, surely ought to be taught, and to be taught correctly, as far as the instruction proceeds. While these Lessons are made as plain and simple as they well can be, all the subjects treated of have been carried far enough to make the book a genuine Grammar of Botany and Vegetable Physiology, and a sufficient introduction to those works in which the plants of a country - especially of our own - are described. Accordingly, as respects the principles of Botany (including Vegetable Physiology), this work is complete in itself, as a school-book for younger classes, and even for the students of our higher seminaries. For it comprises a pretty full account of the structure, organs, growth, and reproduction of plants, and of their important uses in the scheme of creation, - subjects which certainly ought to be as generally understood by all educated people as the elements of Natural Philosophy or Astronomy are; and which are quite as easy to be learned. The book is also intended to serve as an introduction to the author's Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States (or to any similar work describing the plants of other districts), and to be to it what a grammar and a dictionary are to a classical author. It consequently contains many terms and details which there is no necessity for young students perfectly to understand in the first instance, and still less to commit to memory, but which they will need to refer to as occasions arise, when they come to analyze flowers, and ascertain the names of our wild plants. To make the book complete in this respect, a full Glossary, or Dictionary of Terms used in describing Plants, is added to the volume. This contains very many words which are not used in the Manual of Botany; but as they occur in common botanical works, it was thought best to introduce and explain them. All the words in the Glossary which seemed to require it arc accented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology: Illustrated by Over 360 Wood Engravings, From Original DrawingsIt is by no means indispensable for students to go through the volume before commencing with the analysis of plants. When the proper season for botanizing arrives, and when the first twelve Lessons have been gone over, they may take up Lesson XXVIII. And the following ones, and pro ceed to study the various wild plants they find in blossom, in the manner illustrated in Lesson XXX, &c., referring to the Glossary, and thence to the pages of the Lessons, as directed, for explanations of the various distinctions and terms they meet with. Their first essays will necessarily be rather tedious, if not difficult; but each successful attempt smooths the way for the next, and soon these technical terms and distinctions will become nearly as familiar as those of ordinary language.Students who, having mastered this elementary work, wish to extend their acquaintance with Vegetable Anatomy and Physiology, and to con sider higher questions about the structure and classification of plants, will be prepared to take up the author's Botanical text-book, or other more detailed treatises. No care and expense have been spared upon the illustrations of this volume; which, with one or two exceptions, are all original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Botany: A Practical Guide in Self-Teaching, Designed to Cultivate the Observing and Reasoning Powers of Children But the present book has a still stronger claim to attention; it develops a new method of study which is designed to correct that which is confessedly the deepest defect of our current education. This defect is the almost total lack of any systematic cultivation of the observing powers. Although all real knowl edge begins in attention to things, and consists in the discrimination and comparison of the likenesses and differences among objects; yet, strange to say, in our vaunted system of instruction there is no provision for the regular training of the perceptive faculties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for High Schools and Colleges This book is designed to serve as an Introduction to the Study of Plants. It does not profess to give a, complete account of the Vegetable Kingdom, but only such an outline as will best subserve the pur poses of the work. In its preparation there have been kept in view the wants of the large number, in the schools and out, who wish to obtain, as a branch of a liberal cul ture, a general knowledge of the structure of plants, with some idea as to their classification into the larger divisions and subdivisions of the Vegetable Kingdom. For this class of students and general readers, what is here given will in most cases be amply sufficient to enable any one to understand the greater part of the current biological literature, in so far as it relates to vegetable organisms. For the student who desires to pursue the subject further, or who intends to make botany a special study, this book aims to lead him to become himself an observer and investigator, and thus to obtain at first hand his knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of plants accordingly the presentation of the matter has been made such as to fit the book for constant use in the Laboratory, the text supplying the outline sketch, which may be filled up by each. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Elementary Botany This book has been prepared for use in schools in which elementary Botany is taught during the last half or last third of the school year. It is believed that a course in Botany which is designed for those who are taking their first lessons in the subject and most of whom will not have opportunity to pursue it farther, ought to afford opportunity for scientific training as well as for obtaining some general information concerning the vegetable kingdom, particularly in relation to the growth and development of plants, their relationships, their uses, etc. Accordingly, directions for practical work, observation, and performing experiments have been offered throughout, but in immediate connection with the paragraphs of the text that pertain to the subject in hand. This has not interrupted the proper symmetry and logical arrangement of the topics that should be included in an elementary course for high schools. The practical work indicated need not and should not be a verification of the text; that, it is true, would be an improvement over mere text-book work, but it lacks the very spirit and essential feature of scientific work. The observation and experimentation must be made to find out the facts in the case. This will afford scientific training and, besides, real knowledge will be gained.
