Book excerpt: Knowledge acquisition is one of the most important aspects influencing the quality of methods used in artificial intelligence and the reliability of expert systems. The various issues dealt with in this volume concern many different approaches to the handling of partial knowledge and to the ensuing methods for reasoning and decision making under uncertainty, as applied to problems in artificial intelligence. The volume is composed of the invited and contributed papers presented at the Workshop on Mathematical Models for Handling Partial Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture of Erice (Sicily, Italy) on June 19-25, 1994, in the framework of the International School of Mathematics "G.Stampacchia". It includes also a transcription of the roundtable held during the workshop to promote discussions on fundamental issues, since in the choice of invited speakers we have tried to maintain a balance between the various schools of knowl edge and uncertainty modeling. Choquet expected utility models are discussed in the paper by Alain Chateauneuf: they allow the separation of perception of uncertainty or risk from the valuation of outcomes, and can be of help in decision mak ing. Petr Hajek shows that reasoning in fuzzy logic may be put on a strict logical (formal) basis, so contributing to our understanding of what fuzzy logic is and what one is doing when applying fuzzy reasoning.

Integration of fixed and portable wirele ss access into IP and ATM networks presents a cost effective and eff icient way to provide seamless end to end connectivity and ubiquitous access in a market where demands on Mobile and Cellular Networks have grown rapidly and predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue. The deployment of broadband IP based technologies over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and integration of IP with broadband wireless access networks (BWANs) are becoming increasingly important. In addition, fixed core IP/ATM networks are constructed with recent move to IP/MPLS over DWDM. More over, mobility introduces further challenges in the area that have neither been fully understood nor resolved in the preceding network generation. This first Conference ICN01 has been very well perceived by the International networking community. A total of 300 papers from 39 countries were submitted, from which 168 have been accepted. Each paper has been reviewed by several members of the scientific Program Committee.

Book excerpt: This year's main conference focused on next-generation wireless and wired broadband networks, sensor networks and emerging applications related to access networks. The main conference received 23 submissions from 15 different countries. After a thorough review process, 9 papers were accepted from the open call, one distinguished researcher was invited to contribute an invited paper and one was invited for a post-deadline submission, yielding 11 technical papers altogether. The 11 technical papers were organized into 4 technical sessions. In addition, four posters were allocated for a poster session during the conference. Within the main program of the conference, two keynote speeches addressed hot topics on emerging trends and focus areas for access networks. The first keynote by Jens Malmodin from Ericsson addressed the energy and carbon footprint of ICT and media services and the second keynote by Peter Szilagyi, Nokia Siemens Networks, addressed self-organizing networks. Collocated together with the main conference of AccessNets 2010 was the First International ICST Workshop on Autonomic Networking and Self-Management in Access Networks (SELFMAGICNETS 2010), which complemented the main conference program with focused coverage on theories and technologies of autonomic networking and self-management. -- from preface.
