Book excerpt: The Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN) was formally established under the framework of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) in November 2017, when its first meeting took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. GLOSOLAN’s objectives are: (1) to strengthen the performance of laboratories through use of standardized methods and protocols, and (2) to harmonize soil analysis methods so that soil information is comparable and interpretable across laboratories, countries and regions. In this context, GLOSOLAN plans to develop open access Standard Operating Procedures and manuals on good laboratory practices, execute regional and global proficiency testing, and increase the overall performance of laboratories through the organization of training sessions. By April 2019, over 220 laboratories from all continents were registered in GLOSOLAN. The South-East Asian Laboratory Network (SEALNET) which corresponds to the Regional Soil Laboratory Networks for the South-East Asian region decided to conduct an independent assessment of the technical performance of SEALNET laboratories through an inter-laboratory comparison. This report presents the results of the analysis using different figures to help laboratory managers and other non-specialist readers to perceive the different aspects of (i) the laboratory performance evaluation, (ii) the way to identify the technical problems in case of poor performances and (iii) suggesting which solutions can be proposed to improve the analytical performances

Their overarching goals are to achieve food security for all, improve nutrition and support the progressive realization of a judicious management of non-renewable natural resource in the context of sustainable development. They represent a key output for the Global Soil Partnership that demonstrate once again to be an effective global policy forum where global soil issues are discussed and addressed by multiple stakeholders. The Guidelines serve as both a complementary tool fostering the implementation of the revised World Soil Charter and as a reference for a wide range of committed stakeholders, such as government officials, policy makers, farmers, pastoralists, forest and land managers, extension specialists and agricultural advisors, development partners, civil society, private sector and, academia, etc. The VGSSM’s added value is in its principal aim: setting out established scientific principles and internationally acknowledged recommended management practices for the responsible governance of soils. By setting out these technical and policy recommendations, they provide guidance to all stakeholders on how sustainable soil management can be achieved.

Also, many city managers now erroneously assume that pest-borne diseases are relics of the past. All these changes make timely a new analysis of the direct and indirect effects of present-day urban pests on health. Such an analysis should lead to the development of strategies to manage them and reduce the risk of exposure. To this end, WHO invited international experts in various fields - pests, pest-related diseases and pest management - to provide evidence on which to base policies. These experts identified the public health risk posed by various pests and appropriate measures to prevent and control them. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.
