Book First Full Six dimensional Phase Space Measurement of a Hadron Beam

Download or read book First Full Six dimensional Phase Space Measurement of a Hadron Beam written by Brandon Lee Cathey and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant limitation for accelerator physics simulation tools is the inability to accurately predict the distribution of particles in a linear accelerator hadron beam. Even state-of-the-art particle-in-cell codes that contain all the relevant physics are only able to reproduce the beam's measured root-mean-square (RMS) parameters. However, characterizing the beam at several standard deviations beyond RMS is necessary to predict beam loss, one of the limiting factors for achievable beam power and performance in high power, high intensity accelerators. The accelerator community agrees that the discrepancy between measurement and simulation stems from a poor understanding of the initial particle phase space distribution entering the linac. This can be credited to the fact that no complete six dimensional measurement of the initial beam distribution entering a linac has ever been accomplished. This dissertation presents the first complete six-dimensional phase space measurement of a particle beam in a hadron accelerator [1]. The measurement was completed at Spallation Neutron Source Beam Test Facility, a functional duplicate of the SNS front-end capable of producing a pulsed 2.5 MeV H− ion beam. The technique coordinated six movable slits to isolate small, specified volumes systematically over the full six-dimensional phase space and measure the charge inside each volume. The measurement revealed previously unknown, intensity dependent correlations in the phase space distribution that are not visible in lower dimensional measurements. Results will also serve as a full and accurate particle distribution for bench-marking simulations and predicting beam dynamics at the level which relates to beam loss.

Book Hadron Colliders At The Highest Energy And Luminosity Proceedings Of The 34th Wrshp Of The Infn Project

Download or read book Hadron Colliders At The Highest Energy And Luminosity Proceedings Of The 34th Wrshp Of The Infn Project written by Alessandro G Ruggiero and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-02-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for the revelation of the deepest composition of the structure of matter and the nature of the fundamental forces that bind them together is underway, using experiments with colliding hadron beams at the largest energy and luminosity that present and near-future accelerator technology can allow. This book gives the physics motivation of such a collider and discusses the benefits and requirements of the experimental program. Obviously the size of the collider is a major concern, and that is determined by the bending field which is possible to achieve in superconducting magnets; the book includes a discussion on the ultimate expected magnetic field that can be reached. There are also presentations of straw-man designs; in particular, the effects of the synchrotron radiation, which are quite significant at very large energies and large bending fields, are examined, with the possibility of taking advantage of them for the attainment of small beam size and thus luminosity. In addition, detector issues are discussed, especially in relation to the large expected background, the total number of events, and the difficulties of gathering and selecting relevant events. Finally, there is a discussion on the social and political implications of such a project.

Book Four Dimensional Trace Space Measurement

Download or read book Four Dimensional Trace Space Measurement written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future high energy colliders and FELs (Free Electron Lasers) such as the proposed LCLS (Linac Coherent Light Source) at SLAC require high brightness electron beams. In general a high brightness electron beam will contain a large number of electrons that occupy a short longitudinal duration, can be focused to a small transverse area while having small transverse divergences. Therefore the beam must have a high peak current and occupy small areas in transverse phase space and so have small transverse emittances. Additionally the beam should propagate at high energy and have a low energy spread to reduce chromatic effects. The requirements of the LCLS for example are pulses which contain 101° electrons in a temporal duration of 10 ps FWHM with projected normalized transverse emittances of 1[pi] mm mrad[1]. Currently the most promising method of producing such a beam is the RF photoinjector. The GTF (Gun Test Facility) at SLAC was constructed to produce and characterize laser and electron beams which fulfill the LCLS requirements. Emittance measurements of the electron beam at the GTF contain evidence of strong coupling between the transverse dimensions of the beam. This thesis explores the effects of this coupling on the determination of the projected emittances of the electron beam. In the presence of such a coupling the projected normalized emittance is no longer a conserved quantity. The conserved quantity is the normalized full four dimensional phase space occupied by the beam. A method to determine the presence and evaluate the strength of the coupling in emittance measurements made in the laboratory is developed. A method to calculate the four dimensional volume the beam occupies in phase space using quantities available in the laboratory environment is also developed. Results of measurements made of the electron beam at the GTF that demonstrate these concepts are presented and discussed.

Book Secondary Beam Line Phase Space Measurement and Modeling at LAMPF

Download or read book Secondary Beam Line Phase Space Measurement and Modeling at LAMPF written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardware and software have been developed for precision on-line measurement and fitting of secondary beam line phase space parameters. A system consisting of three MWPC planes for measuring particle trajectories, in coincidence with a time-of-flight telescope and a range telescope for particle identification, has been interfaced to a computer. Software has been developed for on-line track reconstruction, application of experimental cuts, and fitting of two-dimensional phase space ellipses for each particle species. The measured distributions have been found to agree well with the predictions of the Monte Carlo program DECAY TURTLE. The fitted phase space ellipses are a useful input to optimization routines, such as TRANSPORT, used to search for superior tunes. Application of this system to the LAMPF Stopped Muon Channel is described.

Book Soft Multihadron Dynamics

Download or read book Soft Multihadron Dynamics written by W. Kittel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of the development and present status of the field of soft (i.e. non-perturbative) phenomena encountered in the production of (multi-) hadronic final states by the collision of various types of particles at high energies. Phenomenological models used to describe the data are in general inspired by Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) and the book repeatedly crosses the border — if at all existent — between soft (non-perturbative) and hard (perturbative) QCD.

Book High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider The The New Machine For Illuminating The Mysteries Of Universe

Download or read book High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider The The New Machine For Illuminating The Mysteries Of Universe written by Lucio Rossi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad introduction to the physics and technology of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). This new configuration of the LHC is one of the major accelerator projects for the next 20 years and will give new life to the LHC after its first 15-year operation. Not only will it allow more precise measurements of the Higgs boson and of any new particles that might be discovered in the next LHC run, but also extend the mass limit reach for detecting new particles. The HL-LHC is based on the innovative accelerator magnet technologies capable of generating 11-13 Tesla fields, with effectiveness enhanced by use of the new Achromatic Telescopic Squeezing scheme, and other state-of-the-art accelerator technologies, such as superconducting compact RF crab cavities, advanced collimation concepts, and novel power technology based on high temperature superconducting links. The book consists of a series of chapters touching on all issues of technology and design, and each chapter can be read independently. The first few chapters give a summary of the whole project, of the physics motivation and of the accelerator challenges. The subsequent chapters cover the novel technologies, the new configurations of LHC and of its injectors as well as the expected operational implications. Altogether, the book brings the reader to the heart of technologies for the leading edge accelerator and gives insights into next generation hadron colliders.

Book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 1

Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 1 written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are a major invention of the 20th century. In the last eight decades, they have evolved enormously and have fundamentally changed the way we live, think and work.Accelerators are the most powerful microscopes for viewing the tiniest inner structure of cells, genes, molecules, atoms and their constituents such as protons, neutrons, electrons, neutrinos and quarks. This opens up a whole new world for materials science, chemistry and molecular biology. Accelerators with megawatt beam power may ultimately solve a critical problem faced by our society, namely, the treatment of nuclear waste and the supply of an alternative type of energy. There are also tens of thousands of small accelerators all over the world. They are used every day for medical imaging, cancer therapy, radioisotope production, high-density chip-making, mass spectrometry, cargo x-ray/gamma-ray imaging, detection of explosives and illicit drugs, and weapons. This volume provides a comprehensive review of this driving and fascinating field. The poster (also available in 1118 x 406 mm size) which illustrates the history and development of particle accelerators from 1919 to the future can be purchased separately.
