Book Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance Use Conditions

Download or read book Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance Use Conditions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, more than 33 million Americans receive health care for mental or substance-use conditions, or both. Together, mental and substance-use illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability for women, the highest for men ages 15-44, and the second highest for all men. Effective treatments exist, but services are frequently fragmented and, as with general health care, there are barriers that prevent many from receiving these treatments as designed or at all. The consequences of this are seriousâ€"for these individuals and their families; their employers and the workforce; for the nation's economy; as well as the education, welfare, and justice systems. Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions examines the distinctive characteristics of health care for mental and substance-use conditions, including payment, benefit coverage, and regulatory issues, as well as health care organization and delivery issues. This new volume in the Quality Chasm series puts forth an agenda for improving the quality of this care based on this analysis. Patients and their families, primary health care providers, specialty mental health and substance-use treatment providers, health care organizations, health plans, purchasers of group health care, and all involved in health care for mental and substanceâ€"use conditions will benefit from this guide to achieving better care.

Book The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology

Download or read book The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology written by Alan F. Schatzberg and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 1850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology is an indispensable and comprehensive resource for clinicians and trainees who prescribe psychotropic medications. Updated to reflect the new DSM-5 classification, this revised Fifth Edition maintains the user-friendly structure of its predecessors while offering in-depth coverage of the latest research in pharmacological principles, classes of drugs, and psychiatric disorders. Introductory chapters provide a theoretical grounding in clinical applications, with topics ranging from neurotransmitters to brain imaging in psychopharmacology. The bulk of the book is devoted to various classes of drugs, including antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and other agents, with each class divided into chapters on specific drugs -- either new or revised to include the latest findings and trends. Finally, the section on psychopharmacological treatment addresses evidence-based principles of clinical care for the full spectrum of mental disorders and conditions -- from depression to chronic pain -- as well as for specific populations and circumstances -- from children and adolescents to psychiatric emergencies -- offering information on topics such as medication selection, combination and maintenance dosing regimens, monitoring and management of side effects, and strategies for optimizing treatment response. The book's beneficial features are many: The section on principles of pharmacology has been revised and reorganized to incorporate recent discoveries from the fields of neurobiology, genetics, brain imaging, and epidemiology. History and discovery, structure--activity relationships, pharmacological profiles, pharmacokinetics and disposition, mechanisms of action, indications and efficacy, side effects and toxicology, and drug--drug interactions are addressed for each agent. This consistent structure places the desired information at the clinician's fingertips and facilitates study for trainees. Coverage of drugs approved since the last edition is thorough, encompassing new antidepressants (e.g., vortioxetine), new antipsychotics (e.g., cariprazine), and agents on the clinical horizon (e.g., ketamine). More than 180 tables and graphs present critically important data in an accessible way. A work of uncommon scientific rigor and clinical utility, The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology provides state-of-the-art information on both the principles and the practice of psychopharmacological treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Book excerpt: This multiauthored work brings together the scholarly and the clinical in its analysis of two separate yet inextricably linked endeavors in psychology: the cultural adaptation of existing interventions and the movement toward evidence-based practice (EBP). The unifying theoretical framework of this volume promotes culturally adapted EBPs as productive and empirically viable approaches to treating ethnic minorities and culturally diverse groups. Cultural Adaptations will appeal to clinicians who treat an ethnically and culturally diverse clientele, as well as to researchers, scholars, and students, who will value the conceptual and methodological discussions of evidence-based psychological practice and cultural adaptations of psychotherapeutic techniques.

Book Growing Up in the Middle East

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the Middle East HBSC study presented in this book was to examine the needs and experience of Jewish and Arab Israeli youth, as well as Arab youth in the Palestinian Authority of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The study was based on the HBSC (Health Behaviour of School-Aged Children) study that investigates the health and well-being, behaviour and experiences of adolescents around the world from a broad ecological and holistic perspective. The collection and analysis of youth health data help inform and influence appropriate, culturally-relevant policies of health-promotion and health-education as well as intervention strategies both regionally and internationally. HBSC is a cross-national, school-based survey currently encompassing 43 countries in Europe and North America under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Regional Office. It is conducted every four years in order to track multi-year trends. HBSC-ME is a collaborative, cross-cultural study similar to the international HBSC. The project was initiated in 1995 by researchers from Bar-Ilan and Al-Quds universities and the Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute. Data collection was carried out in 2004, and data analysis and dissemination of findings have continued over the last decade.

Book Child Rearing in America

Leading scholars from diverse disciplines use relevant data from the Commonwealth Survey of Parents with Young Children to present new information about the lives of families with very young children - how parents spend their time with their children, the economic and social challenges they face, and the supports they receive to improve their children's health and development. Such a broad portrait based on nationally representative date has not been attempted before. Drawing on their extensive expertise and research in the issues being addressed, the authors examine and elaborate on the survey findings. They synthesize the major themes emerging from the data and consider the family, community, and policy implications to frame and interpret the results. What emerges is a picture of the complex forces that influence families and child-rearing in the early years.

Book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research

Download or read book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research written by Gørill Haugan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access textbook represents a vital contribution to global health education, offering insights into health promotion as part of patient care for bachelor’s and master’s students in health care (nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiotherapists, social care workers etc.) as well as health care professionals, and providing an overview of the field of health science and health promotion for PhD students and researchers. Written by leading experts from seven countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, it first discusses the theory of health promotion and vital concepts. It then presents updated evidence-based health promotion approaches in different populations (people with chronic diseases, cancer, heart failure, dementia, mental disorders, long-term ICU patients, elderly individuals, families with newborn babies, palliative care patients) and examines different health promotion approaches integrated into primary care services. This edited scientific anthology provides much-needed knowledge, translating research into guidelines for practice. Today’s medical approaches are highly developed; however, patients are human beings with a wholeness of body-mind-spirit. As such, providing high-quality and effective health care requires a holistic physical-psychological-social-spiritual model of health care is required. A great number of patients, both in hospitals and in primary health care, suffer from the lack of a holistic oriented health approach: Their condition is treated, but they feel scared, helpless and lonely. Health promotion focuses on improving people’s health in spite of illnesses. Accordingly, health care that supports/promotes patients’ health by identifying their health resources will result in better patient outcomes: shorter hospital stays, less re-hospitalization, being better able to cope at home and improved well-being, which in turn lead to lower health-care costs. This scientific anthology is the first of its kind, in that it connects health promotion with the salutogenic theory of health throughout the chapters. the authors here expand the understanding of health promotion beyond health protection and disease prevention. The book focuses on describing and explaining salutogenesis as an umbrella concept, not only as the key concept of sense of coherence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of their tragic nature, and notwithstanding the human suffering they create, emergency situations are also opportunities to build better mental health care. The surge of aid, combined with sudden, focused attention on the mental health of the population, creates unparalleled opportunities to transform mental health care for the long term. By publishing this information, the World Health Organization ensures that those faced with emergencies do not miss the opportunity for mental health reform. Emergencies are not only mental health tragedies, but also powerful catalysts for achieving sustainable mental health care in affected communities. We do not know where the next major emergency will be, but we do know that those affected will have the opportunity to build back better. Reading this publication is an excellent way to prepare for and respond to that eventuality. The ten cases that form the core of this report show how it can be done. Early commitment towards a longer-term perspective for mental health reform is key to success. The report summarizes lessons learned and key overlapping practices emerging from these experiences.

Book Evidence Based Practices in Mental Health Care

Download or read book Evidence Based Practices in Mental Health Care written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first attempt to synthesize the movement toward widespread implementation of evidence-based mental health practices, this groundbreaking collection articulates the basic tenets of evidence-based medicine and shows how practices proven effective by clinical services research could improve the lives of many people. Intended to stimulate much-needed public discussion, these remarkable contributions cover both general issues, such as Implementing practices in routine mental health settings, including strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to staff members Ensuring that efforts to implement such practices are informed by the knowledge and experience of administrators, clinicians, patients, and advocates Integrating evidence-based practices with the recovery model and focusing on guidelines and algorithms for pharmacologic treatment of people with severe mental illness Identifying the policy implications of the movement, particularly in public-sector settings, and describing eight courses of action for addressing the gap between science and practice and specific practices, such as Describing critical components of practices for which substantial evidence exists, such as supported employment, dual diagnosis services, and assertive community treatment Developing an evidence base for particular populations, such as children and adolescents and geriatric patients; and for clinical subgroups, such as patients with severe mental illness and posttraumatic stress disorder-and implementing a range of practices for each population Debate in public forums is critical to explaining the benefits of evidence-based care and allaying the fears of patients, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and vested interest groups that evidence-based care excludes them from the decision-making process. Patients need to know that their individual characteristics, preferences, and autonomy are highly valued and won't be discounted by rigid adherence to the particular treatments. Practitioners need to know about the credibility of the evidence base and about new techniques and responsibilities and to understand that their favorite practices won't necessarily be excluded during initial attempts to implement evidence-based practices. Administrators and policy makers need to know about financing, organizing, implementing, and sustaining new practices. Finally, vested interest groups need to know that the introduction of evidence-based practices doesn't mean that what they do now is ineffective. This unique and densely informative volume will be welcomed by mental health care professionals and by lawmakers, planners, administrators, and others who are charged with the responsibility of providing effective care to vulnerable populations.
