Book Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa

Download or read book Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa written by Fred M. Hayward and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes twelve strategic planning efforts in higher education in eight countries in Asia and Africa. Drawing on over fifty years of on-the-ground experience, Fred M. Hayward’s Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa analyzes change processes in higher education in eight Asian and African countries. The twelve cases range from the push to upgrade and transform higher education in Afghanistan in the midst of a war, to the successful struggle against apartheid in South African institutions, as well as thwarted efforts in Sierra Leone and Madagascar. Providing both practical lessons learned and hope for communities globally, Hayward demonstrates that higher education change and even transformation, which is more fundamental and structural, can occur even in the most difficult environments. Successful transformation requires well-crafted strategic and budget plans with careful implementation, monitoring, and effective leadership at multiple levels. Yet also critical are a commitment to human development, a desire for freedom and belief in democracy, and recognition that high-quality higher education is essential to national development. “This book provides detailed and informative accounts of system transformation, policymaking, leadership, and development in several developing countries. These areas are largely neglected in the literature. It also provides an account of the value of coordination and planning in developing effective higher education systems and institutions. It is clear that the author has long experience and expertise in the topics and regions addressed.” — Brendan Cantwell, Michigan State University

Book Airline Network Development in Europe and its Implications for Airport Planning

Download or read book Airline Network Development in Europe and its Implications for Airport Planning written by Dr Guillaume Burghouwt and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing deregulation and liberalization of worldwide air transport markets confronts airport planners with an increasingly problematic context. On the one hand, the capital intensive, large-scale and complex airport investments need a detailed, long/medium-term planning of airport infrastructure. Such planning requires at least predictable traffic volumes (and traffic composition) within the planning horizon. On the other hand, airline route networks are increasingly dynamic structures that frequently show discontinuous changes. As a consequence, the much more volatile airport traffic restricts the value of detailed traffic forecasts. Volatility of airport traffic and its composition requires flexibility of airport strategies and planning processes. The book explores this dilemma through a detailed study of airline network development, airport connectivity and airport planning in the deregulated EU air transport market. The questions the book seeks to answer are: · how have airlines responded to the regime changes in EU aviation with respect to the configuration of their route networks? · what has been the impact of the reconfiguration of airline network configurations for the connectivity of EU airports? · how can airport planners and airport authorities deal with the increasingly uncertain airline network behaviour in Europe?

Book Divided we Fall An Insider s Perspective on Local Government Amalgamations

Download or read book Divided we Fall An Insider s Perspective on Local Government Amalgamations written by Dr Ian Tiley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Australian local government structural reform has manifested as council amalgamations and predominantly as imposed merger processes. This book examines council amalgamations across Australia over the past two decades and uncovers the case of council amalgamation in the NSW Clarence Valley Council (CVC) since 2004. The case of forced amalgamation of four general-purpose and two county councils could have been a recipe for chaos; instead this book describes the gains and the challenges. Writing from deep seated knowledge of local government this book details the net positive economic outcomes and financial benefits against measurable indicators and describes the impacts on local democracy. Based on detailed research, this long term local government ‘insider’ perspective will be of value to all those interested in driving change through local government reform.
