Book excerpt: First Book in Physiology and Hygiene by John Harvey Kellogg This book is intended for children. The special objects which the author has aimed to accomplish in the preparation of the work have been: 1. To present as fully as possible and proper in a work of this character a statement of the laws of healthful living, giving such special prominence to the subject of stimulants and narcotics as its recognized importance and the recent laws relating to the study of this branch of hygiene demand. 2. To present in a simple manner such anatomical and physiological facts as shall give the child a good fundamental knowledge of the structure and functions of the human body. 3. To present each topic in such clear and simple language as to enable the pupil to comprehend the subject-matter with little aid from the teacher; and to observe in the manner of presentation the principle that the things to be studied should be placed before the mind of the child before they are named. A natural and logical order has been observed in the sequence of topics. Technical terms have been used very sparingly, and only in their natural order, and are then fully explained and their pronunciation indicated, so that it is not thought necessary to append a glossary. 4. To present the subjects of Physiology and Hygiene in the light of the most recent authentic researches in these branches of science, and to avoid the numerous errors which have for many years been current in the school literature of these subjects. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Download or read book First Book of Physiology and Hygiene Classic Reprint written by Gertrude De Cathcart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physiology and Hygiene When the author undertook the preparation of a little book in which the outlines of Physiology and Hygiene should be presented in a simple and attractive form, the task did not seem so difficult as it has proved to be. Feeling that some thing more was necessary than merely to string the manifold facts together, loosely like so many beads, an attempt was made to give them a more coherent form by grouping them round certain central ideas which made an appeal to the imagination. Such a method promised to arouse the interest of young readers, and at the same time to furnish them with a framework into which knowledge afterwards acquired could be fitted. Small though the measure of success in this direction may be, it is hoped that the book will be of some value to junior students. Simple language has been used throughout and technical terms have been avoided, so far as possible. The main ideas have been emphasized by a certain amount of repetition, which serves to impress them upon the mind and at the same time presents the subject in true perspective. It is a great pleasure to the author not only to express indebtedness to Prof. R. A. Gregory for his valuable advice and criticism, but also to offer sincere thanks to Mr. A. T. Simmons for his help and suggestions. Acknowledgment must also be made to the Delegates of Local Examinations, Oxford, and the Syndics of Local Examinations, Cambridge, for permission to print a selection of questions from papers set in their Examinations in Physiology and Hygiene. Book First Book in Hygiene

Download or read book First Book in Hygiene written by William Otterbein Krohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Hygiene: A Primer of Physiology In these lessons for young children simple language is used in the presentation of such facts about the structure of the body and its functions as are necessary for clear and definite knowledge of the general laws of health, including the effects of alcohol and narcotics. This book is for the use of pupils just beginning to learn something of the care the human body requires in order to insure the full enjoyment of health. The value of a primary book upon any subject depends both upon the language used and the varied forms of appeal to the child's mind, in order that his interest may be aroused. In this book there are few complex sentences. There is, also, such frequent alter nation in story, written exercise, and observation, picture, memory, and reading lessons that the subject-matter cannot become trite. The lessons are so logically arranged, and so pedagogically co-ordinated, that every sentence, every ques tion, every picture, every poem, every written exercise, forms a vital part in the presentation of hygienic law as an educational whole, in a form most readily comprehended by the child. Anatomy, strictly speaking, is a science the study of which requires the more mature mind of the advanced high school or college student. Only such basal facts of thebody's structure are here presented as are necessary for a clear understanding of the laws of health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, for Grammar Schools and Families: With Eighty-Three Engravings To the teacher we would suggest the propriety of calling on a pupil of the class, to describe the anatomy of an organ from an anatomical outline plate; after wards call upon another to give the physiology of the part, while a third may state the hygiene; after which, the questions at the bottom of the page may be asked promiscuously, and thus the detailed know ledge which each pupil possesses of the subject will be tested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Physiology and Hygiene: For the Use of Schools 1. Physiology. - The term Physiology is derived from Greek words which mean a story about nature. At first physiology included all kinds of natural study; but, as the word is now employed, it is the science which treats of the uses and actions of living objects. Human physiology is a study of what is done by and in the living human body. It is a study about our selves, about the uses and actions of all parts of our bodies - head and trunk, hands and feet, brain and nerves, stomach, heart, and lungs. It teaches us about the movements of the body; about feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and thinking; about eat ing, breathing, keeping warm, growing, wasting, and dying. Animals and plants represent living nature. Minerals represent lifeless nature. Animals and plants are born, live, grow, and pass away according. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children. Download or read book Anatomy Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Henry Fox Hewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene The facts of Anatomy and Physiology are put as sim ply and clearly as possible; something in the way of object lessons, with the child himself as an object. The pupil is encouraged to look in the fields and markets to see the truth of the statements made, and is constantly referred to the pictures that illustrate the text for a bet ter understanding. Common diseases are mentioned, and the habits that lead to them emphasized. The book is in two parts, because it seems wiser to learn the parts and uses of a machine before attempting to run it, and the dependence of the systems is so inti mate that a knowledge of all should precede an attempt to study the hygiene of any one. Download or read book Physiology and Hygiene for Young People Classic Reprint written by Robert Eadie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Hygiene for Young People IT is realized to-day, as perhaps never before, that our most precious possession is good health. There never was a time when greater effort was put forth to make it possible for chil dren to grow up with strong, healthy bodies, and for grown people to live and do their work under healthful conditions. In the preparation of this book the authors have made it their chief aim to present the essential facts of. Personal, domestic, and public hygiene in such a way as to render the book an efficient ally of the forces that are working for healthy living. A man entrusted with the care and running of a machine far less intricate than the human body is expected to know all its parts, and their relations to one another, before he is fitted to run the machine at its greatest efficiency. It is equally reasonable to expect that one is best fitted to care for his body, the machine with which he must do all his work, only when he knows its parts and the work that each should perform. Accordingly, in this book a sufficient amount of anatomy and physiology of the organs of the body is given to make their hygiene intelligible. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book on Analytic Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, Human and Comparative: For Common and Grammar Schools and for Families I'he treatment of some of the common ills of life of wounded, poisoned and asphyxiated persons, is briefly discussed in their appro prlate chapters. Another object in view has been to make the style clear, concise and adapted to the references made to illustrative figures, to teach the pupil the correct word, though it may be a technical term, believing it is best to use those terms which express the ideas that are peculiar to the study. As the study of objects is more simple and impressive than mere words, and as illustrations are more instructive, particularly to children, than written sentences, this work has been so arranged as to be used advantageously, with object study and topical instruction, especially with Outline Anatomical Charts, both human and comparative. As use is the test of a text-book, this manual is respectfully submitted to teachers and to patrons of schools.
