A panorama where the lights and shadows of lives that have left a deep mark are integrated.

Book DYNASTY ON THE TEXAS PLAINS

Download or read book DYNASTY ON THE TEXAS PLAINS written by Bonnie Faye James Gaston and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My son asked me to write the things I did while growing up. The two chapters I thought I could write became forty-four chapters. My memories are happy moments, as I grew up during the Depression in a wonderful Christian home six miles south of Littlefield, Texas. The moment my Father saw me, he called me his Plains Angel. My Mother was a kind and thoughtful person with a precious disposition and always spoke with positive words. Living with my brothers and sisters was like having my best friends with me at all times. Life was great even with the sandstorms turning our daylight to darkness, planting black-eye peas instead of cotton because of little rainfall, gathering eggs from tall haystacks, hoeing cotton from dawn to dusk, and learning how to preserve fruits, vegetables, and meat for our winter food. My Father was a great farmer and helped provide electricity and a party-line telephone system to our rural community. He is known as Mr. REA (Rural Electrification Administration) in Littlefield, Texas. I researched my Littlefield School system in 1913 and found Mr. George W. Littlefield had donated land for a one-room school building. Ms. Willie Armstrong taught school in April, May, and June with a yearly salary of forty dollars. My dream to help children and fill their lives with sunshine came true the day I began my teaching career in Plainview, Texas. After writing about World War I, World War II, and the following wars, I have a better understanding what my two brothers and other family members must have endured. I am thankful my three wonderful sons – Terry, Dale, and Randy with their adventures at home, church, school, Scout trips, did not have to experience the pain of war. My life has been blessed with a wonderful husband, three great sons that are successful, a great daughter-in-law, and two precious grandchildren, Trevor and Lane. My joyful memories growing up on a Littlefield farm with my wonderful family gave me the foundation I needed for my life’s adventures and accomplishment. Bonnie Faye James Gaston

Book Exiled

  • Author : Carl L. Kell

  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9781572334489
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Exiled written by Carl L. Kell and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been one of the major news stories in religion and culture of the past twenty-five years. From 1979 to 1995, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was rocked by assaults on its leadership by fundamentalists, who used questionable tactics to gain top positions and then used their power to purge Baptist seminary presidents and professors, church pastors, lay leaders, and women from positions of responsibility. America's largest Christian, non-Catholic denomination is firmly locked in a holy war to secure its churches and membership for a never-ending struggle against a liberal culture. Exiled: Voices of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War is a compilation of first-person narratives by conservative and moderate ministers and lay leaders who were stripped of their positions and essentially became pariahs in the churches to which they had devoted their lives. While other books have described the takeover in historical, political, and theological terms, Exiled is different. Individual people tell their personal stories, revealing the struggle and heartache that resulted from being vilified, dispossessed, and exiled. Kell includes a variety of perspectives--from lay preachers and church members to prominent former SBC leaders such as James Dunn and Carolyn Crumpler. The emotion captured on the pages--sadness, shock, disbelief, resignation, and anger--will make Exiled moving even to readers who know little about the Southern Baptist movement. Exiled will also be of particular interest to historians, sociologists, philosophers of religion, and rhetorical historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on Fire: A History of the "Chair of Fire" and Southern Baptist Evangelism in Theological Education takes a step back into early-twentieth-century Texas Baptist history and observes the unveiling of the crown jewel of the Southern Baptist Convention, the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the events that led the forward-thinking architect of theological education, Benajah Harvey (B. H.) Carroll, to the creation of the world's first endowed chair of evangelism and professorship of evangelism at his newly formed Texas seminary. This book carries the reader through a 112-year history of an academic chair and professorship that both educated men and women in the art of personal and mass evangelism and provided the necessary evangelistic spirit to forge the fervent pioneering, soul-winning denominational spirit that has thrust Southern Baptists to the forefront of evangelistic advancement since their inception in 1845. Studying the auspicious beginnings of evangelism taught in theological education will delve into the lives of the men who have taught Christians to reach their neighbors for Christ Jesus. The "Chair of Fire" has impacted all seminaries and Christian schools around the world because of the inclusion of evangelism in theological education.
