Book First a Panther Then a Bulldog

Download or read book First a Panther Then a Bulldog written by Herbert Waggener and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of my four years of high school, starting with two years at Rockville as a Panther, and the second two years as a Bulldog at Appleton City, Missouri. They were fun, productive years. I was a bright student with limited athletic abilities, but competed with some success in both basketball and football. During summers and on weekends, I worked at my Father's sawmill, helping at the mill, logging in the timber, and later on, driving log trucks or delivering lumber to customers. I bought a 1928 Model T touring car, painted it bright red, and used it to attract and transport girls. My academic record was not excellent, but I did win a small Curator's Award to the University of Missouri, where in 1954 I would attend college, majoring in Physics. The training that I received from my family, my mentors, and my high school experience would serve me well throughout my life. This story celebrates those years.

I mined coal, wrangled calves, milked a cow, made gunpowder, built rockets, firecrackers, and cannons, and became a fair electronic technician.

Book Murder in the Model City

Download or read book Murder in the Model City written by Paul Bass and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May 20, 1969: Four members of the revolutionary Black Panther Party trudge through woods along the edges of the Coginchaug River outside of New Haven, Connecticut. Gunshots shatter the silence. Three men emerge from the woods. Soon, two are in police custody. One flees across the country. Nine Panthers would be tried for crimes committed that night, including National Chairman Bobby Seale, extradited from California with the aide of Panther nemesis, California Governor Ronald Reagan. Activists of all denominations descended on the New England city--and the campus of Yale. The Nixon administration sent 4,000 National Guardsmen. U.S. military tanks lined the streets outside of New Haven. In this white-knuckle journey through a turbulent America, Doug Rae and Paul Bass let us eavesdrop on late-night meetings between Yale President, Kingman Brewster, and radical activists, including Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, as they try to avert disaster. Meanwhile, most heartrending of all is the never-before-told story of Warren Kimbro--star community worker turned Panther assassin--who faces an uphill battle to turn his life around.

Download or read book Panther Tract written by Melody Golding and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting wild boar is a keenly held tradition in the Mississippi Delta. Fraught with danger, it challenges the hunter, observer, wildlife enthusiast, and landowner alike. Panther Tract is an insider's observance of extraordinary hunting, southern hospitality, camaraderie, and the love of dogs, horses, and hair-raising excitement. The over 160 photographs are representative of a “day at the hunt,” starting at dawn and ending well after dark. The tales center on vivid hunting experiences, both at Panther Tract, a large wilderness paradise in Yazoo County, owned by legendary southern gentleman Howard Brent, and in other locations in the Mississippi Delta. The narratives come from men, women, doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, politicians, farmers, sharecroppers' sons, and even a Hollywood screenwriter. Melody Golding's photographs focus on the Delta landscape and on the people and animals involved in the hunt. Portraits of the hunters, and their interactions with one another and their dogs and horses, fascinate. An award-winning photographer and an expert horsewoman, Golding brings a knowledgeable and critical eye to these images. The stories she collects range from traditional often humorous hunting tales to more serious accounts of the history of hog hunting in America. Hank Burdine, a Mississippi native and hunter who has written for many statewide publications, lends a broad vision to the history, statistics, and lore of hunting wild hogs. An appendix features hunt recipes by Chef John Folse and philosophy on the stewardship of harvesting the hog. A colorful and diverse assemblage of beautiful photographs and tales, this book reveals a treasured regional tradition.
