Cependant cette littérature est principalement consacrée au cas des firmes originaires de pays développés. Elle explique dans une large mesure les mouvements d'internationalisation observés par certaines caractéristiques spécifiques de l'environnement économique dont ont bénéficié les firmes internationales dans leurs pays d'origine (niveau de développement technologique, formation de la main d'œuvre, infrastructure économique, cadre institutionnel, sophistication de la demande,). Or, depuis une trentaine d'années on assiste à l'émergence d'entreprises originaires du tiers monde. De toute évidence la littérature classique sur les multinationales n'offre qu'une interprétation très imparfaite de ce phénomène. Cette thèse a pour objectif de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension du phénomène de l'expansion internationale des firmes originaires de pays émergents. A cet effet, nous avons analysé de manière exploratoire, les facteurs sur lesquels les multinationales du tiers monde se distinguent de leurs homologues dont l'activité reste presque exclusivement locale. Nous avons complété cette analyse en comparant les multinationales originaires de pays émergents aux multinationales classiques originaires de pays développés. La partie empirique de ce travail s'est appuyée sur des données recueillies par questionnaires auprès de 121 entreprises originaires de pays émergents d'Amérique Latine, d'Asie et d'Europe de l'Est et de 28 entreprises multinationales originaires de pays développés.
