Book excerpt: “A nuanced and complex look at the long-standing consequences of privilege and toxic masculinity . . . . Compulsively readable!” —Kate Moretti, New York Times–bestselling author of The Vanishing Year Megan Mazeros and Lauren Mabrey are complete opposites on paper. Megan is a girl from a modest Midwest background, and Lauren is the daughter of a senator from an esteemed New England family. When they become roommates at a private women’s college, they forge a strong, albeit unlikely, friendship, sharing clothes, advice and their most intimate secrets. The summer before senior year, Megan joins Lauren and her family on their private island off the coast of Maine. It should be a summer of relaxation, a last hurrah before graduation and the pressures of post-college life. Then one night, something unspeakable happens, searing through the framework of their friendship and tearing them apart. Many years later, Megan publicly comes forward about what happened that fateful night, revealing a horrible truth and threatening to expose long-buried secrets. “DeBoard does a wonderful job creating her realistic and flawed characters . . . . This story particularly resonates now, in the throes of the #MeToo movement.” —Booklist “A wrenching tale of broken friendship and shattered dreams.” —Kirkus Reviews “Suspenseful and evocative . . . . An engrossing read.” —Kimberly Belle, national bestselling author of The Marriage Lie “An absorbing exploration of how we attain personal power and the consequences of wielding it.” —Kathryn Craft, author of The Far End of Happy “Observant, devastating, and thoroughly satisfying.” —Emily Carpenter, author of The Weight of Lies “Powerful.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Life is an adventure. Make the most of it and remember; The best is yet to come. I am now in my eighties, and for many years I have wanted to share some of my travel adventures with friends and family. Some adventures have been hilarious, some have been dangerous, all have been exciting. Many of the places I have been to no longer exist, and some of my adventures would not be possible today. My world is disappearing before my eyes and I want to record some of it before it is completely gone. To my children and grandchildren; I want them to know Grandma was not always elderly. There was a time when she climbed Mount Vesuvius, rode camels in the desert and para-sailed over the ocean. I began traveling when I was very young and the world was a much friendlier place. Each trip was a lovely adventure, there were no fast food places, hotels always had a room and you never stood in line. So here are my stories for you to read and enjoy, and hopefully to remember me, and yes, Im still here.

Book Neither The Biggest Or Best

Download or read book Neither The Biggest Or Best written by Graham Thomas and published by SAGUS. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mostly when we read stories about advertising in the media or in books, they concentrate on the big names of the business - whether advertisers and their brands, agencies, or people. Yet while they sit at the undoubted glamorous end of the spectrum, picking up creative awards and with tales of off-screen outré antics to spill, they represent only the tip of the iceberg in terms of numbers. Under the waterline most of the smaller ad agencies were independent; a few were the regional subsidiaries of the biggest agencies (Saatchis, Dorlands, JWT, McCanns, Royds and Streets all had offices in Manchester for example); a few were also second string agencies in London set up by the main agency for a variety of reasons: specialist agencies that worked in recruitment, finance, corporate, and business-to-business advertising for example; or to handle conflicting accounts, or clients that were too small for the main agency to handle profitably. But as Campaign once wrote, there is a ‘stigma attached to these agencies.’ They were (still are?) seen as second class and on the fringes of the business. Rarely did they act as feeder agencies for talent (unlike journalism where many leading journalists started their careers on local newspapers before ending up on Fleet Street). Even the Chairman of JWT Manchester admitted in the early ‘80s that ‘Northern advertising people have a bit of a complex about their London counterparts. All regional agencies are in danger of being a bit provincial in their outlook.’ This volume looks at those agencies mainly through a diary written in the late 1970s. This gives a vivid, truthful, warts-and-or portrayal of what life was like in the tail-end of the advertising business.

Book excerpt: Corruption, infatuation, and conflicting loyalties collide in a rural Southern mill town in this debut novel by an award-winning poet and environmentalist. On a placid Blue Ridge mountain lake on Labor Day Weekend in 1935, three locals in an overloaded boat drown, and the cotton mill scion who owns the lake is indicted for their murders. Decades later Ben Crocker—a reluctant participant in the aftermath of this long-forgotten tragedy—is drawn back into the morally ambiguous world of mill fortunes and foothills justice. The son of mill workers in Carlton, South Carolina, Crocker works as bookkeeper to the owner, George McCane. And when McCane decides to lay off families connected to the Uprising of ‘34, Crocker finds himself in the ill-fitting position of enforcer. But days after the evictions, a surprise indictment lands McCane in jail and sinks Crocker even deeper into the escalating tensions. While traversing mountain communities in McCane’s defense, Crocker must also negotiate with labor organizers and fend off his family’s skepticism of his social aspirations. Meanwhile, hanging over Crocker’s upended life is his infatuation with Novie Moreland—the young widow of a man McCane is accused of killing. Looking back on this crucial period of his life, Crocker knows he must seek out Novie Moreland once more if he is ever to find closure with the past. Book excerpt: Georgia has produced some of the major figures of modern literature, including Carson McCullers, Erskine Caldwell and, most notably, Flannery O'Connor. While such writers are firmly established in American literary history, all too few readers are aware of how the state's tradition of literary excellence persists in the present day. The thirty stories in After O'Connor were written during the past fifteen years by authors who were born in Georgia or spent a significant part of their lives and careers in this state. Embracing the social, cultural, and ethnic variety in today's Georgia, After O'Connor both advances and helps redefine the great southern storytelling tradition.

Book Voices of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience 2 volumes

Download or read book Voices of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience 2 volumes written by Sang Chi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique work presents an extraordinary breadth of contemporary and historical views on Asian America and Pacific Islanders, conveyed through the voices of the men and women who lived these experiences over more than 150 years. In 1848, the "First Wave" of Asian immigration arrived in the United States. By the first decade of the 21st century, Asian Americans were the nation's fastest growing racial group. Through a far-ranging array of primary source documents, Voices of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience shares what it was like for these diverse peoples to live and work in the United States, for better and for worse. Organized chronologically by ethnicity, the book covers a panoply of ethnic groups, including recent Asian immigrants and mixed race/mixed heritage Asian Americans. There is also a topical section that showcases views on everything from politics to class to gender dynamics, underscoring that the Asian American population is not—nor has it ever been—monolithic. In choosing material, the editors strove to make the volume as comprehensive as possible. Thus, readers will discover documents written by transnational, adopted, and homosexual Asian Americans, as well as documents written from particular religious positions.
