Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how God’s love can rewrite your story in My Story, Your Glory, a thirty-day devotional that explores how God’s glory redeems every chapter of our lives—inspired by Dove Award-winning worship music artist Matthew West’s song “My Story, Your Glory.” My Story, Your Glory reveals how God brings hope into all situations in our lives. We all have hurts, mistakes, and losses in our lives that we wish would disappear. God promises that He will work all things together for the good of those who love Him. The God of mercy doesn’t mark up our stories with a red pen; He blots out our sins and then comes alongside us, encouraging us to keep writing. Readers will learn how to find God’s purpose in their pain and His message in their mistakes. By sharing his own highs and lows, West relates to readers and helps them to reflect on the less-than-perfect parts of their lives. Readers are pointed to examples in Scripture of people not much different from us, and how God, in His glory, redeemed their stories. In every way that we are not enough, our God is. West encourages readers to give God the glory in both the best days and worst days. Each entry in this devotional calls readers to: Connect to God’s Story and truth through selected Bible verses Craft your story by recording your answer to a thought-provoking prompt Share your story with God or others, inviting God to move through the Spirit Live your story by bringing glory to God through concrete action My Story, Your Glory guides readers to call God into their story, giving Him the glory for all He’s already done and waiting expectantly for Him to write the next chapter.

Book A History of Fireworks from Their Origins to the Present Day

Download or read book A History of Fireworks from Their Origins to the Present Day written by John Withington and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bursting with images from across time, a sparkling chronicle of rockets, pinwheels, and more. This book illuminates the glittering history of fireworks, from their mysterious beginnings to the dazzling big-budget displays of today. It describes how they enthralled the world’s royal courts and became a sensation across the British Empire. There are stories of innovations like “living fireworks,” fiercely fought international competitions, and the technology behind modern showpieces viewed by millions. Practitioners say fireworks are an art, and they have inspired artists from Shakespeare, Handel, Dickens, and Whistler to Katy Perry. But John Withington also covers fireworks’ practical uses—rescues at sea, attempts to control the weather—while not ignoring their dangers, accidents, or efforts to make them safer.

Lyman Ward is a retired professor of history, recently confined to a wheelchair by a crippling bone disease and dependant on others for his every need. Amid the chaos of 1970s counterculture he retreats to his ancestral home of Grass Valley, California, to write the biography of his grandmother: an elegant and headstrong artist and pioneer who, together with her engineer husband, made her own journey through the hardscrabble West nearly a hundred years before. In discovering her story he excavates his own, probing the shadows of his experience and the America that has come of age around him.

Book excerpt: Journalist Lola Wicks discovers a story she can't resist...but it could be her last When former foreign correspondent Lola Wicks heads to Wyoming for a Yellowstone vacation, she comes across a story that hits close to her past. One Wyoming soldier returning from Afghanistan commits suicide, two others spark a near-fatal brawl, and a woman is terrorized. Lola, accompanied by her young daughter, senses a story about whatever happened on the far side of the world that these troops have so disastrously brought home. But she soon realizes that getting the story must take second place to getting herself—and her little girl—out of Wyoming alive. Praise: "A gutsy series."—The New York Times "A gut-wrenching mystery/thriller that explores prejudice and the incredible stress on soldiers in a seemingly unending war with no clear goals."—Kirkus Reviews "A hallmark of the Lola Wicks series is Florio's seamless weaving of Native American communities into the narrative. Book excerpt: How do we create new ways of looking at the world? Join award-winning data storyteller RJ Andrews as he pushes beyond the usual how-to, and takes you on an adventure into the rich art of informing. Creating Info We Trust is a craft that puts the world into forms that are strong and true. It begins with maps, diagrams, and charts — but must push further than dry defaults to be truly effective. How do we attract attention? How can we offer audiences valuable experiences worth their time? How can we help people access complexity? Dark and mysterious, but full of potential, data is the raw material from which new understanding can emerge. Become a hero of the information age as you learn how to dip into the chaos of data and emerge with new understanding that can entertain, improve, and inspire. Whether you call the craft data storytelling, data visualization, data journalism, dashboard design, or infographic creation — what matters is that you are courageously confronting the chaos of it all in order to improve how people see the world. Info We Trust is written for everyone who straddles the domains of data and people: data visualization professionals, analysts, and all who are enthusiastic for seeing the world in new ways. This book draws from the entirety of human experience, quantitative and poetic. It teaches advanced techniques, such as visual metaphor and data transformations, in order to create more human presentations of data. It also shows how we can learn from print advertising, engineering, museum curation, and mythology archetypes. This human-centered approach works with machines to design information for people. Advance your understanding beyond by learning from a broad tradition of putting things “in formation” to create new and wonderful ways of opening our eyes to the world. Info We Trust takes a thoroughly original point of attack on the art of informing. It builds on decades of best practices and adds the creative enthusiasm of a world-class data storyteller. Info We Trust is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of original compositions designed to illuminate the craft, delight the reader, and inspire a generation of data storytellers.
