Book excerpt: Although this book is a work of fiction, it is based on actual events. John Gross lived through those events. He commanded a mechanized infantry company that fought in Bien Hoa City on the first day of the Tet Offensive. I was one of his soldiers that day. He has an insider's understanding of the Vietnam War, but he also has a wonderful facility for making it understandable to the average reader. David T. Zabecki, Editor, Vietnam Magazine

Book Zeus Jupiter Jesus and the Catholic Church

Download or read book Zeus Jupiter Jesus and the Catholic Church written by Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there always good reasons to get out of bed in the morning? This book argues that there are, citing the line of poetry from Virgil’s Aeneid that is inscribed at the World Trade Center memorial: ‘No day shall erase you from the memory of time’. It traces fascinating parallels between the role played in the Aeneid by deceitful gods and the role played in the Bible by a deceitful Devil, and explains how Jesus, respecting our free will, offers us eternal happiness, but refuses to convert us by force.

Book Firewalking on Jupiter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Kinzer
  • Publisher : Jupiter Center Publications
  • Release : 2014-06-05
  • ISBN : 9780692221860
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Firewalking on Jupiter written by Michael Kinzer and published by Jupiter Center Publications. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is this book called Firewalking on Jupiter? An old friend, no longer with us in this life, once called me "firewalker." He told me he called me firewalker because I had a way of living my life as I saw fit, with confidence, not needing to justify who I was or the decisions I made-that this ability was the result of a difficult but necessary process of facing my many personal demons and re-experiencing traumatic events in my childhood. You will find many references in this book to the idea that it is possible to live a life in which you have no fear of any part of yourself or your past because you have accepted yourself fully, including the parts of yourself you may not particularly like. My experience as a therapy client in adulthood, and then later as a therapist helping others, tells me the process is not easy, but it is possible. Although I do not describe in detail the environment of abuse and chaos I survived as a child in this book, I have written about it elsewhere, given talks about it, and may publish someday the memoir I have written about it, called Twelfth Child. My need to fully explore very painful memories and relationships has galvanized my commitment to helping others realize they can do the same-they can become their own firewalkers. Just in case you were wondering, I do realize that it would be pretty difficult to go "Firewalking on Jupiter," where the average temperature is -234 degrees (Fahrenheit). The reference to Jupiter is related to the ideas behind my own emotional path and how I help clients now as a therapist. An interpretation of the ancient symbol for Jupiter (inside the orange circle on the cover) is that it means "soul dominating matter," or "mind over matter." This is a very powerful idea. We did not choose our birth parents, gender, race, or our time in history to be born. If these things define us, then we are nothing but circumstance. This cannot be true. And it isn't true. We have a mind, which gives us the freedom to choose how to respond to our circumstance -this is mind over matter. I have been providing therapy services to clients for over a decade. This book is the result of the work I have done as a client in therapy and then later, as a therapist helping others, learning from my own life experiences and from the struggles my clients bring to my office every day. Whether you are a person searching for your own personal growth or a professional helping others on their path, I want this book to help you learn what I have learned about clients' struggles (without violating confidentiality of course) and how I have been able to help along the way.

Book Astrology Relationships

Download or read book Astrology Relationships written by David Pond and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2001 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of what is published about astrological relationships covers the same ground. We've all read that Libra gets along well with Leo, Aries is bound to clash with Capricorn, Pisces and Scorpio are natural lovers, and so on. It all sounds like a pretty well worn formula, but there's one problem--people are not that simple, and neither are relationships! Astrology & Relationships takes a much more satisfying path, showing how astrology can help you improve all of your relationships. It addresses the complexities of real relationships by revealing the essential nature, needs, strengths, and challenges of every combination. Then it takes the unique step of offering exercises that will help you manifest the true potential that exists between each of the signs. This book emerged from actual experiences between a practicing professional astrologer and the thousands of people he has worked with. The ideas and exercises included within have been tried, tested, and refined so that they can be integrated into daily living. The program presented in this book has been proven to work--not just in theory, but in real life.

Book Studies in Virgil

Download or read book Studies in Virgil written by Terrot Reaveley Glover and published by . This book was released on 1904 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonplace that to understand a poet we need some knowledge of his time and place. His mind will take colour from his surroundings, by sympathy or antipathy. He will share at least some of the limitations of his age and generation, while, in common with his contemporaries, he belongs to a stage of moral and intellectual development in advance of his predecessors. At the same time it must be remembered that a great poet will generally also be in advance of his contemporaries in the fullness with which he realizes the life of his day, with its problems and its solutions of those problems, and he will represent in some measure, whether he means it or not, the standpoint of a later age. -- Pg. 1.

Book Mysteries and Secrets Revealed

Download or read book Mysteries and Secrets Revealed written by Loren Pankratz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mysteries and Secrets Revealed uncovers the reality behind mysteries of nature and secrets of frauds that eluded common understanding. The journey begins in the ancient Greek city of Delphi, where priests claimed the gift of a priceless gold lion was an acknowledgement of their clairvoyant powers. But their concocted story concealed an embarrassing blunder. Those sufficiently savvy to catch the lie became aware of even deeper problems. Author Loren Pankratz then guides us through the conflicts of Renaissance scholars, including Galileo who explained things in ways that enraged philosophers and infuriated priests. Galileo's methods of investigation were perpetuated by the meticulous work of the Academy of Experiment, and Bernard Fontenelle's enthralling dialogue enabled common people to accept life in the rearranged sun-centered universe. Clairvoyants in a mesmeric trance claimed they could visit distant planets and endure brutal surgical procedures. If any of this was real, how was it possible? One nineteenth century mesmeric savant, Alexis Didier, was so convincing that someone claimed no case of clairvoyance could be made for anyone if his accomplishments were not real. This unchallenged declaration is now unraveled here for the first time through information gleaned from uncommon documents and rare antiquarian pamphlets. The surprising manifestations of modern spiritualism quickly escalated into a psychic arms race that included mysterious tipping and turning of tables. Scientist Michael Faraday devised ingenious experiments to show how subtle muscle reactions outside of awareness created these manifestations. On the other hand, explanations for table levitations and mysterious writing on slates could only be solved by individuals with acute observational skills and acquainted with the methods of trickery. Each story in Mysteries and SecretsRevealed captures the tension of conflict, the thrill of discovery, and the strategies of science that unmasked frauds, fakes, false belief, and the enigmas of our natural world.

Book Three Books of Occult Philosophy

Download or read book Three Books of Occult Philosophy written by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Three Books of Occult Philosophy's vast store of magical lore has been so influential that occultists have been drawing upon it for the past five centuries. This classic work was first published in 1531, and translated into English in 1651, but it has never since been reprinted in its entirety. Now--for the first time in 500 years--editor Donald Tyson presents these writings as Agrippa intended them to appear: wholly complete and free from the hundreds of errors made in the original translation. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the most complete repository of pagan and Neo-platonic magic ever compiled. This book is packed with material you will not find elsewhere, including copious extracts on magic from obscure or lost works by Pythagoras, Pliny the Elder, Cicero, Ptolemy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other authorities. Donald Tyson's detailed annotations clarify difficult references and provide origins of quotations, even expanding upon them in many cases in order to make Agrippa's work more accessible to the modern reader. As well as providing extensive insight into the foundations of the Western Esoteric tradition, the Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the ultimate 'how-to' for magical workings. It describes how to work all manner of divinations and natural and ceremonial magic in such clear and useful detail that it is still the guide for modern techniques. And the extensive supplementary material--including biographical and geographical disctionaries and appendices--provides quick reference to many previously obscure matters in classical magic. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is an essential reference tool for all students of the history of ideas and the occult tradition."--back cover.
