Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastics in Building Structures covers the proceedings of a conference, held in London on June 14-16, 1965. This conference focuses on the applications of plastics materials in structures. This book emerged from 39 papers presented at the conference. The introductory papers describe the properties of plastics in relation to building structures, and the economic aspects, fire regulations, and flammability of these materials. Considerable papers are devoted to various areas of application of plastics, including adhesives, polymer cements, cored chipboard units, and glued timber. These topics are followed by discussions on the characterization, design, and structural and physical properties of plastics. The final chapters review the commercial development and applications of plastic materials. This book will prove useful to engineers, designer, manufacturers, and researchers in the allied fields.

Book Handbook of Building Materials for Fire Protection

Download or read book Handbook of Building Materials for Fire Protection written by Charles A. Harper and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2003-09-20 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first handbook devoted to the coverage of materials in the field of fire engineering. Fire Protection Building Materials Handbook walks you through the challenging maze of choosing form the hundreds of commercially available materials used in buildings today and tells you which burn and /or are weakened during exposure to fire. It is the burning characteristics of materials, which usually allow fires to begin and propagate, and the degradation of materials that cause the most damage. Providing expert guidance every step of the way, Fire Protection Building Materials Handbook helps the architect, designers and fire protection engineers to design and maintain safer buildings while complying with international codes.

Book excerpt: Plastics are high-performance materials of wide use in the built environment. Their versatile technical properties are particularly fascinating. A broad range of form-giving and finishing processes makes plastic especially interesting for complex geometries in combination with digital planning processes. Following the pioneering plastic structures of the 1970s, a number of spectacular buildings have in recent years highlighted the outstanding technical and aesthetic potential of the material. Until now, however, there has been no systematic treatment of the use of plastic in architecture. This book seeks to fill that gap by providing an introduction to the structural and design possibilities of plastic. It introduces the material and its specific characteristics, describes various types of plastic in terms of their relevance for building, explains processing technologies and presents typical products and components. A concise presentation of twenty-five international built projects – organized by the type of application and the plastic involved – documents the broad range of plastic in architecture. Finally, a look ahead at the future describes the current state of the art in materials research.

Book Cellular Plastics in Building Construction

Download or read book Cellular Plastics in Building Construction written by V. P. Dowling and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian building regulations control the fire properties of cellular plastics used in buildings by setting criteria based on three test methods - AS 1530 Part 1, known as 'The Combustibility Test'; AS 1530 Part 3, known as 'The Early Fire Hazard Test'; and AS 1530 Part 4, known as 'The Fire-Resistance Test'. However, the regulations allow cellular plastics of otherwise unsatisfactory fire performance to be used if they are sealed inside a sandwich panel which meets certain fire performance criteria. These criteria are related to performance in the AS 1530.3 test, and in a 10-minute furnace test modelled on AS 1530.4. This paper summarises the regulatory situation and discusses a series of tests in which a limited range of lightweight sandwich panels were subjected to a 10-minute furnace test. It was found that none of the lightweight sandwich panel systems assessed performed well in the furnace test. In addition, difficulties were experienced with the test procedure and interpretation of results.

Book Fire Performance Analysis for Buildings

Download or read book Fire Performance Analysis for Buildings written by Robert W. Fitzgerald and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A building fire is dynamic. A continually changing hostile fire environment influences time relationships that affect fire defenses and risks to people and building functions. The fire and fire defenses in each building interact with different sequences and distinct ways. Risks are characterized by the building’s performance. Significantly updated and restructured new edition Fire Performance Analysis for Buildings, 2nd Edition organizes the complex interactions into an analytical framework to evaluate any building - at any location - built under any regulatory jurisdiction or era. Systematic, logical procedures evaluate individual component behavior and integrate results to understand holistic performance. The Interactive Performance Information (IPI) chart structures complex time-related interactions among the fire, fire defenses, and associated risks. Quantification uses state-of-the-art deterministic methods of fire safety engineering and fire science. Managing uncertainty is specifically addressed. Key features: Emphasizes fire performance analysis for new or existing buildings. Augments fire dynamics calculation methods with qualitative methods to form a more complete understanding of the effects of hostile fire characteristics on building performance. Describes fire ground operations for engineers with no fire service experience. An analysis evaluates ways the site and building design help or hinder manual fire suppression. Establishes a transition from traditional structural requirements to modern calculation based structural analysis and design for fire conditions. Structural concepts are described for non-structural engineers to enable the roles of each profession to be integrated into comprehensive performance evaluations. Addresses techniques of managing uncertainty to improve understanding and communication with professionals of other disciplines. Describes methods of risk management using information from the building’s performance analysis. Fire Performance Analysis for Buildings, 2nd Edition has been completely restructured around a performance based framework. Applications integrate traditional fire defenses with fire science and engineering to combine component performance with holistic performance.
