Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1856, three companies of handcarts were outfitted and sent west from Iowa to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. All went well, and they arrived without undue incident. But two additional companies - one captained by James G. Willie, and the other by Edward Martin - left England late in the season. Whey they arrived at Iowa City, they were long past the time for safe departure across the plains. By the time they left Florence, Nebraska, with still more than a thousand miles to go, it was near the end of August. As if that were not serious enough, President Brigham Young thought that the arrival of the third company ended the migration for that season and ordered the resupply wagons back to Salt Lake. Fire of the Covenant is the story of those handcart pioneers and their exodus to the Salt Lake Valley. Author Gerald N. Lund has used the same techniques present in The Work and the Glory series to blend fictional characters into the tapestry of actual historical events, making this a story filled with all the elements of great drama - tragedy, triumph, pathos, courage, sacrifice, surrender and faith.

The lives of the three become intertwined.Jonathan enjoys a happy childhood participating in farming, studying under the student-prophet Ethan, and gaining spiritual insights. After military training, Jonathan is appointed an army commander. His confrontation with a Philistine patrol results in declaration of war. With Saul's army at Gilgal dwindling, when Samuel does not arrive in time Saul offers the sacrifice, determined to preserve his kingdom. Samuel arrives and denounces this usurpation of the priesthood, declaring Saul's kingdom will not endure. Jonathan initiates a daring raid at Michmash. Battle ensues and Israel gains victory, the first of many successful battles. Doeg the Edomite ingratiates himself into Saul's confidence. Saul's trust of the heathen disturbs Jonathan. When Saul does not destroy the Amalekites, as God commanded, Samuel again declares Saul's kingdom will not endure. Unaware of these declarations of judgment, Jonathan is confused by Saul's indecisiveness, defensive attitude, paranoia, and erratic responses. Jonathan develops a spiritual bond with David, killer of the giant Goliath, and they "cut a covenant," a vow of loyalty and mutual protection. Saul perceives the highly praised David as a threat to his kingship and becomes obsessed with killing him. Saul slaughters 85 priests and the Gibeonites, plus other retaliations against David. Jonathan gradually understands the cause of his father's state of mind. Jonathan accepts he will never be king. His brother Malki-Shua's blind allegiance to their father troubles Jonathan, who finds solace in God's presence and psalms of David which he has memorized. Malki-Shua eventually sees his father's wrong and seeks reconciliation. Saul never repents. The king and three sons die in battle at Jezreel in the final scene on Mount Gilboa.Jonathan lives and dies in the faith. A man of integrity, the crown prince never reigns over a kingdom, but instead rules his own spirt-a true conqueror.

Book excerpt: Most Christians have it all mixed up about Jesus Christ and the church out of Peter¿s rock. For James Robert Sabolick, the truth and the way started quite inconspicuously. It all started at Fort Pitt Bridge in 1976. Since then, his life had been nothing but an unending shredding of sinful ways, revelations through dreams and messages out of distinct events in his life and family members. There were those countless times he had drowned in alcohol and attempted to end his life while in the US Navy. A marriage brought forth the death of a son a few days after birth. Yet, not even the end of the marriage and life on the streets of Florida could sway his growing faith, which started in 1976 all the way to Mount Olives to bury his covenant, a Hebrew bullet, on the way to Mount Tsijon (Zion).
