Book excerpt: For decades, the small, quiet town of Hamlet, North Carolina, thrived thanks to the railroad. But by the 1970s, it had become a postindustrial backwater, a magnet for businesses in search of cheap labor and almost no oversight. Imperial Food Products was one of those businesses. The company set up shop in Hamlet in the 1980s. Workers who complained about low pay and hazardous working conditions at the plant were silenced or fired. But jobs were scarce in town, so workers kept coming back, and the company continued to operate with impunity. Then, on the morning of September 3, 1991, the never-inspected chicken-processing plant a stone's throw from Hamlet's city hall burst into flames. Twenty-five people perished that day behind the plant's locked and bolted doors. It remains one of the deadliest accidents ever in the history of the modern American food industry. Eighty years after the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, industrial disasters were supposed to have been a thing of the past in the United States. However, as award-winning historian Bryant Simon shows, the pursuit of cheap food merged with economic decline in small towns across the South and the nation to devalue laborers and create perilous working conditions. The Hamlet fire and its aftermath reveal the social costs of antiunionism, lax regulations, and ongoing racial discrimination. Using oral histories, contemporary news coverage, and state records, Simon has constructed a vivid, potent, and disturbing social autopsy of this town, this factory, and this time that exposes how cheap labor, cheap government, and cheap food came together in a way that was destined to result in tragedy.

Book Forest Fires and Their Prevention

Download or read book Forest Fires and Their Prevention written by J. S. Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Fires and Their Prevention: Including Forest Fires in North Carolina During 1910 During 1909 the United States Forest Service attempted to collect uniform data on the prevalence and destructiveness of forest fires in all the various States. The North Carolina Geological and Economic Sur vey co - Operated with the Forest Service in this work in this State, and got together some very interesting - figures. Though admittedly incom plete, these were published by the State Survey in Economic Paper N o. 19, Forest Fires in North Carolina During This publication 'heis been scattered widely through the State, and is still available for distribution. It should be read in connection with the present report in order to best understand the application of the figures and to obtain much information which it was thought best not to repeat. Owing to the failure of many of the States to obtain sufficient reliable information, the general fire study of the Forest Service, which was in tended to_ be annual and permanent, has been discontinued. The North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey then had to decide as to the advisability of continuing the collection of these figures unaided. Though the data collected last year was far from satisfactory, still it was thought that the economic and educational value of such figures was great enough to warrant the expense of collecting them. With the hope, therefore, of increasing their accuracy and broadening their influence, the Survey determined to continue the collection of this infor mation in regard to the annual destruction by forest fires. Book Accidental Birds of the Carolinas

Download or read book Accidental Birds of the Carolinas written by Marjorie Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like birds blown off course, the characters in these stories need a place to roost-somewhere to settle long enough to repair their ragged hearts-and they find it near the banks of the mythical Sissipahaw River. In the centerpiece story, an eighteenth-century Eno Indian tells of the fiery fate of his adopted father, English explorer John Lawson. In the surrounding stories, the age-old conflicts between newcomer and old-timer play out as twenty-first century retirees, carnies, runaways, heartbroken women, and farmers stumble into new lives and new insights in Ambler County, North Carolina. "Hudson's prose is pure as birdsong," says novelist Doris Betts. "These fine stories of change and discovery are a field guide to the human species in transition."

Book Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting

Download or read book Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting written by Michael J. Legeros and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second collection of historic firefighting images covers 1940 through 1990, five formative decades for fire protection in North Carolina's capital county. During this period, the Raleigh Fire Department quadrupled in size, smaller municipal fire departments modernized, and rural fire departments formed to protect outlying areas. As populations increased and technology advanced, 20th century firefighters found their duties evolving from simple "smoke eating" to include emergency medical services, rescue and extrication, and hazardous-materials training. Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting, Volume II, depicts fires, fire equipment, and firefighters in over 200 images culled from newspapers, archives, and personal collections. Included in this second volume are rare, early photographs of the Six Forks Road, Western Boulevard, and Wake Forest #2 fire departments.
