This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 1967, Ken Killmeyer became a crew member of USS Forrestal CVA-59, the first of the super aircraft carriers. In 1995, Ken was offered the position of historian of the USS Forrestal Association. During his time as a historian, Ken began collecting personal experience narratives of crew members who were aboard along with him during the worst naval disaster to befall a ship since World War II. Ken has combined those stories with USS Forrestals deck logs and the official investigation report into the cause of the Forrestal fire and has given the reader an undeniable window into this devastating event. Ken takes the reader on a journey like none other, from high above the busy flight deck on the navigation bridge down to deep within Forrestals hull in the hot, steamy engine rooms. The reader will hear from the crew in their own words what they experienced before, during, and after this most tragic day in the lives of USS Forrestals Westpac 1967 crew. Book excerpt: The aircraft carrier USS Forrestal was preparing to launch attacks into North Vietnam when one of its jets accidentally fired a rocket into an aircraft occupied by pilot John McCain. A huge fire ensued, and McCain barely escaped before a 1,000-pound bomb on his plane exploded, causing a chain reaction with other bombs on surrounding planes. The crew struggled for days to extinguish the fires, but, in the end, the tragedy took the lives of 134 men. For thirty-five years, the terrible loss of life has been blamed on the sailors themselves, but this meticulously documented history shows that they were truly the victims and heroes.

Book Whatever Were You Thinking Of Captain

Download or read book Whatever Were You Thinking Of Captain written by John L. Morton and published by kea publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at all those passengers who are interested in more than the arrival of their aircraft safely and on time. It first explains how crews go about their work and the background to airline operations, including some technical aspects couched in understandable terms. It then follows the logical sequence of a flight from the planning stage to 'after landing' chores, commenting on what goes through a Captain's mind and the sort of decisions he has to take. Occasionally it has been necessary to digress in order to include some point of interest or anecdote. There are appendices listing the pre-and post-1956 phonetic alphabets and international aircraft registration prefixes, allowing easy identification of the countries of origin of aircraft seen.

  • Author : Peter Fey
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press

  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Bloody Sixteen written by Peter Fey and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategy and reality collide in Peter Fey’s gripping history of aircraft carrier USS Oriskany’s three deployments to Vietnam with Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16). Its tours coincided with the most dangerous phases of Operation Rolling Thunder, the ill-fated bombing campaign against North Vietnam, and accounted for a quarter of all the naval aircraft lost during Rolling Thunder—the highest loss rate of any carrier air wing during Vietnam. The Johnson administration’s policy of gradually applied force meant that Oriskany arrived on station just as previous restrictions were lifted and bombing raids increased. As a result CVW-16 pilots paid a heavy price as they ventured into areas previously designated “off limits” by Washington DC. Named after one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War, the Oriskany lived up to its name. After two years of suffering heavy losses, the ship caught fire—a devastating blow given the limited number of carriers deployed. With only three months allotted for repairs, Oriskany deployed a third and final time and ultimately lost more than half of its aircraft and more than a third of its pilots. The valor and battle accomplishments displayed by Oriskany’s aviators are legendary, but the story of their service has been lost in the disastrous fray of the war itself. Fey portrays the Oriskany and its heroes in an indelible memorial to the fallen of CVW-16 in hopes that the lessons learned from such strategic disasters are not forgotten in today’s sphere of war-bent politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAPT Bohnker followed CAPT Terrence Riley (FS) as Senior Medical Officer onboard USS FORRESTAL (CV 59) in the summer of 1990. As he reported onboard, real-world events of the First Gulf War changed the ship’s schedule and drove events for the next year. CAPT Bohnker presents the experience of extended workups, deployment and change in home ports to Pensacola Florida, with another change in home ports to Philadelphia shortly after he left. He presents a gritty recounting of the day-to-day experiences of an Aircraft Senior Medical Officer who must interact with the seaman recruits to the rear admirals. This was lived out in the uncertainly of variable real-world changes originating several levels up the chain.
