The characteristics of fire hazards are discussed in detail, and the thermal environments faced by firefighters in these fire hazards are also examined. The different types of potential burn injuries and the heat stress that occurs to firefighters’ bodies when exposed to such thermal environments are analyzed. Furthermore, the development of various high performance fibers and fabrics for thermal protective clothing is discussed. The test methods and existing standards to evaluate the thermal protective and physiological comfort performances of the fabrics and clothing are critically reviewed. Recent developments in the field of fire- and heat-resistant materials have led to significant improvements in thermal protective clothing. In parallel with this, the complexity and risk levels of fires, especially in industrial-storage facilities, and developments in health and safety cultures have increased the demand for high-performance heat- and flame-resistant clothing and equipment, designed to mitigate skin burn injuries and reduce risk of death from fire hazards. Throughout the work, the gaps and limitations in existing test methods and standards are identified, and approaches are recommended for the development of enhanced test methods. Scenario modeling and its implications for firefighters’ protective clothing is discussed, and various factors affecting performance are established. Finally, various key issues related to thermal protective clothing are addressed to guide the future research in the field of thermal protective clothing for firefighters. Book excerpt: During structural fire fighting operations, fire fighters wear protective gear to insulate them from high temperature environments, including hot combustion gases, burning surfaces, and thermal radiation. Current turnout gear insulates the fire fighter to such an extent, encapsulating his/her entire body, that it is difficult for each individual fire fighter to understand how hazardous or hot the thermal environment is. Therefore, the natural heat-sensing mechanism of the body is incapable of sensing the ambient temperature, possibly putting firefighters at risk. A thermal sensing device that attaches to the visor of the head gear is designed to restore situational awareness of the firefighter by showing varying heat intensity through different colored warning indicators in the firefighter s line of sight. Human factors evaluation of the performance of the warnings in the thermal sensing device was conducted in laboratory-scale (i.e., climatic chamber experiments) and in full-scale (i.e. fire experiments in ISO room) environments. This report describes the laboratory-scale experiments and a second report describes the fullscale fire experiments. A static oven, representing the conductive type of heat; a fire equipment evaluator, with high speed convective flow loop, and a radiant panel, with intense heat flux were used to conduct laboratory-scale experiments.

Book excerpt: System integration of fire fighters' protective clothing requires the harmonious design of the coat, pants, helmet, boots, gloves, and breathing apparatus. Similarly, all clothing layers require a functional integration of characteristics such as resistance to cuts and punctures, mobility, waterproofness, fit, and durability. Thermal protective performance (TPP) rating analyses of several hundred protective clothing combinations have also shown the importance of thermally matching the vapor barrier and thermal liner under the outer protective shell. Inappropriate vapor barrier or thermal liner materials will melt under a Nomex III (95% Nomex 1/5% Kevlar) or polybenzimida-zole (PBI) outer shell if the thermal load is sufficient. TPP instrumentation permits moisture to be added to ensemble materials in order to assess the thermal merits of clothing combinations under operationally relevant fire fighting conditions. TPP data are presented to illustrate the protective merits of thermally integrating the clothing materials in structural fire fighters' clothing.
