Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fire Ecology of the Forest Habitat Types of Central Idaho This report summarizes available fire ecology and management information relating to forest habitat types in central Idaho; specifically, on the Boise, Challis, Payette, and Salmon National Forests; the Fairfield and Ketchum Ranger Districts and Sawtooth National Recrea tion Area of the Sawtooth National Forest; and the Dubois Ranger District of the Targhee National Forest. The primary purpose of this report is to aid in understanding fire's role in central Idaho forests, especially the role of fire in forest succession. Habitat types, as defined by Steele and others are arranged into eleven Fire Groups based on the response of the tree species to fire and similar postfire successions. The exception is Fire Group Zero, which is a collection of miscellaneous vegetation types. The actual successional sequence in any given stand depends upon a number of variables, such as preburn vegetation; the size, nature, and severity of the fire; climatic, topographic, and soil factors; and chance. Steele and geier-hayes (1982a, 1982b) show an example of the variation possible within a single habitat type. Thus, stands that key to the same habitat type might fall into different Fire Groups. Distribution ecology assumes that ecological phenomena can be understood when analyzing the extrinsic (environmental) or intrinsic (physiological constraints, population mechanisms) that correlate with this spatial variation. Ecological processes depend on geographical scales, so their analysis requires following environmental heterogeneity. At small scales, the effects of biotic factors of ecosystems are strong, while at large scales, abiotic factors such as climate, govern ecological functioning. Responses of organisms also depend on scales: at small scales, adaptations dominate, i.e. the ability of organisms to respond adaptively using habitat decision rules that maximize their fitness; at large scales, limiting traits dominate, i.e., tolerance ranges to environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: Fire managers need better estimates of fuel loading so they can more accurately predict the potential fire behavior and effects of alternative fuel and ecosystem restoration treatments. This report presents a new fuel sampling method, called the photoload sampling technique, to quickly and accurately estimate loadings for six common surface fuel components (1 hr, 10 hr, 100 hr, and 1000 hr downed dead woody, shrub, and herbaceous fuels). This technique involves visually comparing fuel conditions in the field with photoload sequences to estimate fuel loadings. Photoload sequences are a series of downward-looking and close-up oblique photographs depicting a sequence of graduated fuel loadings of synthetic fuelbeds for each of the six fuel components. This report contains a set of photoload sequences that describe the range of fuel component loadings for common forest conditions in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana, USA to estimate fuel loading in the field. A companion publication (RMRS-RP-61CD) details the methods used to create the photoload sequences and presents a comprehensive evaluation of the technique.
