Book excerpt: "As usual, the medic, Wiatr, hid himself, the doctor had a panic attack and I decided do go by myself to the next trench in spite of the hellish artillery and canon fire. In the trench was Corporal Gorgel, who helped the officer. The scene on the front line was terrible. Blood, pieces of flesh, heads, arms, legs and intestines all around -an awful sight." Almost 100 years have passed since the end of World War I, also known as "the Great War". At the time, it was the largest war to date. Over 16.5 million people were killed in the war; more than 6 million among them were civilians. During the Great War, a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian Army fought at the frontline trenches and wrote daily in his diary, documenting his experiences there. This man, Teofil Reiss, was an Austro-Hungarian patriot, a professional soldier, a charming ladies' man, and a proud Jew. His practical perspective, trustworthy innocence and open heartedness, merge the details of this diary into a fascinating human document - a rare testimony of a frontline soldier and a picture of an honest man in a senseless war (though, not senseless to him).Almost 100 years after the war, his grandson Tuvia (who was named after him) made the decision to translate and publish his handwritten German diary, adding photos and letters, as well as an epilogue that tells the remarkable story of Teofil Reiss's life during the Nazis' rise to power, and until his death in 1942.

Book Fire from the Sky

Download or read book Fire from the Sky written by Ron Greer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the last few months of WWII in the Pacific, seen through the eyes of one man, a radio operator aboard a B29 Superfortress who kept a diary of 28 missions over Japan. The diary tells of the horrors of war. It was written in darkness, and often fear, with a pen-light during lonely hours confined for up to 18 hours at a time. Herb Greer our main author, 23 years old, frightened and sitting on up to 20,000 pounds of jellied gasoline (napalm), while blindly flying through constant flak bursts and fighter opposition. The plane is blacked out save the dull red glow of the instrument panels as they pass through the target area. Suddenly the most intense bright light floods the aircraft, blinding us the tension in the aircraft shot up, hearts started beating a whole lot faster as we instantly realized that we were being singled out of the sky by a searchlight and were now firmly in the sights of air and ground fire, we were the main act, and center stage. From that moment everything went into slow motion as we pass through the target seconds felt like minutes and minutes, hours. BOOM, an explosion, the plane rocks, bucks, flak is searing its way through the fragile fabric of the fuselage, loose items are flying around, Im scared they say you can taste fear well theyre absolutely right. This personal view gives us two perspectives, the first is the story of Herb Greer speaking to us aboard a B29 through the written entries of his diary and then the second recounted from his armchair 60 years later. Written with an immediacy that can only be shared by those who were there, while capturing for posterity their bravery and dignity of sacrifice. Praise for Fire from the Sky This is a book you will not be able to put down . It is a well-told memoir of the men whose missions will live forever in history! It was my honor to have read the book; it felt almost sacred to be allowed to look inside a crew members personal diarytruly a treasured artifact of historic and sentimental value. This is a book worth reading several times. Great black and white photos as well. I fully recommend this wonderful book about aviation and the men who crewed B-29s. Bill McDonald, president of the Military Writers Society of America As an avid reader of military history, I foundFire from the Sky: A Diary over Japanto be both a treasure-trove of information and a stirringand often startlinglook at the air war over Japan in World War II. What comes acrossin this book is not only the dedication and heroism of a B-29 bomber crew, butalso the harrowing circumstances of life and death in the air. Truly a remarkablebook, told by a remarkable man who found himself with a job to do that now,in the light of the passage of time, seems like an incredible and mind-bogglingachievement. This book richly deserves its Silver Medal Award. Robert McCammon,New York Times bestselling author

Download or read book Blitz Diary written by Mike Brown and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historian Carol Harris has collected together a remarkable series of accounts from the war's darkest days, with heart-warming stories of survival, perseverance, solidarity and bravery, the preservation of which becomes increasingly important as the Blitz fades from living memory. War with Germany seemed increasingly likely throughout the 1930s. The British Government and the general population believed that bombs and poison gas would be dropped on civilians in major towns and cities with the aim of terrifying them into surrendering. Today the Blitz, far from breaking civilian morale, is seen as achieving the opposite; it helped galvanise public opinion to carry on fighting the war. But in 1937, preparations to protect the population were hopelessly inadequate, and the British government was far from confident that people would respond in this way.

Book Field of Fire

Download or read book Field of Fire written by Jack Swaab and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Swaab joined the veteran 51st (Highland) Infantry Division on 3 January 1943. He kept a series of diaries over the following two and a half years, recording the combination of boredom and fear that characterises active service. In mid-March 1943 he saw battle for the first time as Montgomery attacked the Mareth Line. In July that year Swaab took part in the Allied landings on Sicily, writing of the scorching humidity of the Sicilian summer. In May 1944 he records the restless time as his regiment prepared for the invasion of Normandy. In September 1944 Swaab's role changed dramatically, as he moved from commanding a troop to being a forward observation officer. His new position meant that he was working closely with the infantry in the front line. Swaab's first five months as a forward observation officer came to an abrupt end on 13 February, when he was wounded in the leg by shellfire. He was again selected for FOO duty during Operation 'Varsity', the Rhine crossing, in March 1945, and received the Military Cross.
