Book excerpt: Emerging Contaminants: Anticipating Developments examines the factors that have led "new" environmental contaminants to emerge in the past and combines the lessons learned to anticipate potential new developments. The analyses described in this book originate in multiple disciplines: the science of toxicology; environmental law and regulation; the field of product stewardship; and the social science which explains why ideas take hold. Over a dozen case studies of contaminants that emerged as environmental issues over the last hundred years illustrate crucial points. The results of the analyses in this book support a step-by-step method to assess the potential for a contaminant to emerge, and a framework to apply those conclusions to managing site liabilities. Features: Describes an unprecedented understanding of why contaminants emerge as issues, based on a multidisciplinary analysis Makes abstract concepts tangible, basing analyses on data and illustrating key points with case studies Enables readers to anticipate and prepare to manage future challenges associated with emerging chemicals Presents an analytical framework for companies to assess and manage business risks Written for regulators, policymakers, industry professionals with responsibility for contaminated site management, as well as attorneys, and consultants, this book provides a framework for anticipating the emergence of new contaminants so that the risks–whether to human health and the environment or to a business–can be anticipated and appropriately managed.

Book Perchlorate

Download or read book Perchlorate written by Kathleen Sellers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-08-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of analytical methods for identifying widespread perchlorate contamination brought about an explosion of research into the environmental problems and their potential solutions along with a corresponding increase in the availability of information. Unlike reference works that focus on only a few aspects of this contaminant, Perchlorate: Environmental Problems and Solutions offers a comprehensive, single source of information on perchlorate contamination in the environment. Summarizing the state of the science and developments in engineering, the book describes: Common sources of perchlorate Its behavior in the environment Methods for analyzing perchlorate in environmental samples Potential risks to human health and the environment Regulatory standards and criteria Techniques for remediating environmental contamination The authors illustrate these points with case studies of perchlorate contamination in soil, groundwater, and surface water. These case studies provide perspective on issues commonly faced by scientists, engineers, and managers of perchlorate-impacted sites. Organized to follow the logical sequence of identifying and solving contamination problems, the book provides the foundation necessary to understand perchlorate's occurrence, environmental behavior, regulatory status, and remediation.

Book Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids

Download or read book Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids written by CCPS (Center for Chemical Process Safety) and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powders and bulk solids, handled widely in the chemical, pharmaceutical, agriculture, smelting, and other industries present unique fire, explosion, and toxicity hazards. Indeed, substances which are practically inert in consolidated form may become quite hazardous when converted to powders and granules. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is currently investigating dust explosions that occured in 2003 at WestPharma, CTA Acoustics, and Hayes-Lemmerz, and is likely to recommend that companies that handle powders or whose operations produce dust pay more attention to understanding the hazards that may exist at their facility. This new CCPS guidelines book will discuss the types of hazards that can occur in a wide range of process equipment and with a wide range of substances, and will present measures to address these hazards.

Book Managing crises in defense industry

Download or read book Managing crises in defense industry written by Steven R. Linke and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National planning for the expeditious recovery and expansion of essential industrial production facilities is often geared only to largescale declared emergencies. Under the worst scenario of a global war, all necessary authorities and funding are assumed to be available. But more often, lesser emergencies require responses without the broad powers and commitment associated with a declared national emergency. A real emergency can provide insight into the appropriateness of planned management approaches and the adequacy of available authorities. This account of two actual emergencies provides lessons on how statutory procedures could be improved, regulations clarified, the government data base expanded, and steps taken to speed up the process to be followed in the event of other crises. In May 1988, the United States lost half of its capacity to produce ammonium perchlorate when explosions and fire destroyed one of the two producing plants. Ammonium perchlorate is the oxidizer essential to solid-fuel rocket motors. Here, without question, was an excellent test case. Existing ammonium perchlorate had to be carefully allocated and additional production capacity was needed; numerous ongoing production programs for both strategic and conventional systems needed the product, and some would be curtailed if sufficient ammonium perchlorate was not available. This paper documents the government's actions and decision-making process in dealing with various legal and administrative hurdles in both restoring the capacity and allocating available ammonium perchlorate.
