Book The Elementary Forms of the New Religious Life

Download or read book The Elementary Forms of the New Religious Life written by Roy Wallis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, examines the whole range of new religious movements which appeared in the 1960s and 1970s in the West. It develops a wide-ranging theory of these new religions which explains many of their major characteristics. Some of the movements are well-known, such as Scientology, Krishna Consciousness, and the Unification Church. Others such as the Process, Meher Baba, and 3-HO are much less known. While some became international, others remained local; in other ways, too, such as style, belief, organisation, they exhibit enormous diversity. The movements studied here are classified under three ideal types, world-rejecting, world-affirming and world-accommodating, and from here the author develops a theory of the origins, recruitment base, characteristics, and development patterns which they display. The book offers a critical exploration of the theories of the new religions and analyses the highly contentious issue of whether they reflect the process of secularisation, or whether they are a countervailing trend marking the resurgence of religion in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of cross-linked thinking consists in facilitating dealing with complexity and admitting new insights. This approach, prevailing in all realms of knowledge, determines also the artistic praxis of Fluxus initiator George Maciunas. This book shows some hundred diagrams and maps related to history from antiquity to postmodernism; they serve to visualize artistic, political, and economic correlations. If it were up to Maciunas, there wouldn’t be any real concept of the past without percepts. With his maps, diagrams, and tables, a big part of which is published for the first time, he tries to draw a picture of history in a different way. The result seems fascinating both on a scientific and artistic level. It opens insights into eye-opening correlations between dates and facts as well as makes appear completely novel forms of knowledge transfer.

Book Key Environments Madagascar

Download or read book Key Environments Madagascar written by A. Jolly and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the forests of Madagascar, about nine-tenths of the plant and animal species are unique to the island. Their natural habitats range from true rainforest to the lunar landscape of the spiny desert, and the natural rock-gardens of the mountain tops. Madagascar is no oceanic island, but a fragment of continent a thousand miles long, wrenched loose from the side of Africa. In this Lost World, plants and animals have become a living museum of evolution. Aepornis, the largest bird which ever lived, became extinct on Madagascar in the last few hundred years. Many more Malagasy species are now following Aerpornis into extinction. This volume introduces Madagascar's unique fauna and flora to general readers - the first such handbook available in English, and the first book to combine articles by Malagasy, French, English and American scientists, writing in their own fields of expertise.
