Download or read book Teach Like Finland 33 Simple Strategies for Joyful Classrooms written by Timothy D. Walker and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-selling book of easy-to-implement classroom lessons from the world’s premier educational system—now available in paperback. Finland shocked the world when its fifteen-year-olds scored highest on the first Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a set of tests evaluating critical-thinking skills in math, science, and reading. That was in 2001; even today, this tiny Nordic nation continues to amaze. How does Finnish education—with short school days, light homework loads, and little standardized testing—produce students who match the PISA scores of other nations with more traditional “work ethic” standards? When Timothy Walker started teaching fifth graders at a Helsinki public school, he began a search for the secrets behind the successes of Finland’s education system. Highlighting specific strategies that support joyful K–12 classrooms and can be integrated with U.S. educational standards, this book, available in paperback for the first time, gathers what he learned and shows how any teacher can implement many of Finland's best practices. A new foreword by the author addresses the urgent questions of teaching, and living, in these pandemic times.

Download or read book Pantsdrunk Kalsarikanni written by Miska Rantanen and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danes have hygge. Swedes have lagom. But the Finns have the best - "kalsariokanni" or pantsdrunk – drinking at home, alone, in your underwear. When it comes to happiness rankings, Finland always scores near the top. Many Finnish phenomena set the bar high: the best education system, gender equality, a flourishing welfare state, sisu or bull-headed pluck. Behind all of these accomplishments lies a Finnish ability to stay calm, healthy and content in a riptide of endless tasks and temptations. The ability comes from the practice of "kalsarikanni" translated as pantsdrunk. Peel off your clothes down to your underwear. Place savory or sweet snacks within reach alongside your bed or sofa. Make sure your television remote control is nearby along with any and all devices to access social media. Open your preferred alcohol. Your journey toward inner strength, higher quality of life, and peace of mind has begun.
Download or read book Versification written by Frog and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced. Formal principles, such as metre, alliteration, rhyme, or parallelism, take precedence over syntax and prosody, resulting in expressions becoming organised as verse rather than prose. The aesthetic appeal of poetry is often linked to the potential for this process to seem mysterious or almost magical, not to mention the interplay of particular expressions with forms and expectations. The dynamics of versification thus draw a general interest for everyone, from enthusiasts of poetry or forms of verbal art to researchers of folklore, ethnomusicology, linguistics, literature, philology, and more. The authors of the works in the present volume explore versification from a variety of angles and in diverse cultural milieus. The focus is on metrics in practice, meaning that the authors concentrate not so much on the analysis of the metrical systems per se as on the ways that metres are used and varied in performance by individual poets and in relationship to language.
Download or read book Representations of Language Learning and Literacy written by Elena West and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of language learning and literacy, also known as “literacy narratives” are a staple of literature. They tell stories of conflict that illuminate the sociocultural dynamics whereby we learn to speak, read, and write. Yet, they tend to be read as stories about the “powers” of language and literacy – the power to make someone “human”, to form identity, and improve one’s social status. This book introduces the “literacy narrative approach”, a methodology for the study of literacy narratives that accounts for the conflict that pervades them. It achieves this by focussing on how the texts represent the interactions between writing and other semiotic modes (multimodality). Sitting at the interface between theory and practice, it provides three practical applications of the literacy narrative approach and, in the process, develops a theoretical perspective for thinking about language learning, literacy, and communication as they are practised in the real world.

Download or read book The Illusion Mirror The Transformation of a Finnish Girl Studying Abroad in Korea written by Yeong Hwan Choi and published by epubli. This book was released on 2024-09-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illusion Mirror : The Transformation of a Finnish Girl Studying Abroad in Korea Do we truly possess free will? Is the self a real entity, or is it merely an illusion? Irena Löykanto, once a Finnish scholar studying civil engineering in South Korea, found herself entangled in a shocking theory. Through her exploration of fluid dynamics, hydrology, and soil mechanics, she began to suspect that the world she lived in might be a simulation. To her, everything in existence—soil, water, air, even light—felt like moving "data packets" within an artificial design. Her research blurred the line between reality and fiction, leading her to the unsettling realization that the universe itself might be nothing more than an elaborate illusion, like a mirror reflecting endlessly. Even after her time, she exists within someone's record, gazing at us from the void, questioning the concept of the "self" and realizing how hollow the idea of free will truly is. In the end, she understands that what we've trusted as free will was just another part of nature, governed by unseen forces. The Illusion Mirror poses profound philosophical questions about self, reality, and fate, challenging the reader to reflect deeply. Do we really have the power to choose our path, or is everything already designed as part of someone else's plan? As you follow Irena's journey, the boundaries between illusion and truth blur, and you may find yourself questioning whether your own life is part of a grand simulation. By chance or destiny, you've come across this book—but perhaps that, too, was predetermined.

Download or read book The Bullet Journal Method written by Ryder Carroll and published by Fourth Estate. This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Transform your life using the Bullet Journal Method, the revolutionary organisational system and worldwide phenomenon. The Bullet Journal Method will undoubtedly transform your life, in more ways than you can imagine' Hal Elrod, author of The Miracle Morning In his long-awaited first book, Ryder Carroll, the creator of the enormously popular Bullet Journal organisational system, explains how to use his method to: * TRACK YOUR PAST: using nothing more than a pen and paper, create a clear, comprehensive, and organised record of your thoughts and goals. * ORDER YOUR PRESENT: find daily calm by prioritising and minimising your workload and tackling your to-do list in a more mindful and productive way. * PLAN YOUR FUTURE: establish and appraise your short-term and long-term goals, plan more complex projects simply and effectively, and live your life with meaning and purpose. Like many of us, Ryder Carroll tried everything to get organised - countless apps, systems, planners, you name it. Nothing really worked. Then he invented his own simple system that required only pen and paper, which he found both effective and calming. He shared his method with a few friends, and before long he had a worldwide viral movement. The system combines elements of a wishlist, a to-do list, and a diary. It helps you identify what matters and set goals accordingly. By breaking long-term goals into small actionable steps, users map out an approachable path towards continual improvement, allowing them to stay focused despite the crush of incoming demands. But this is much more than a time management book. It's also a manifesto for what Ryder calls "intentional living": making sure that your beliefs and actions align. Even if you already use a Bullet Journal, this book gives you new exercises to become more calm and focused, new insights on how to prioritise well, and a new awareness of the power of analogue tools in a digital world. *** This book has been printed with three different colour designs, black, Nordic blue and emerald.
