Book Finite Simple Groups Thirty Years of the Atlas and Beyond

Download or read book Finite Simple Groups Thirty Years of the Atlas and Beyond written by Manjul Bhargava and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classification of Finite Simple Groups, one of the most monumental accomplishments of modern mathematics, was announced in 1983 with the proof completed in 2004. Since then, it has opened up a new and powerful strategy to approach and resolve many previously inaccessible problems in group theory, number theory, combinatorics, coding theory, algebraic geometry, and other areas of mathematics. This strategy crucially utilizes various information about finite simple groups, part of which is catalogued in the Atlas of Finite Groups (John H. Conway et al.), and in An Atlas of Brauer Characters (Christoph Jansen et al.). It is impossible to overestimate the roles of the Atlases and the related computer algebra systems in the everyday life of researchers in many areas of contemporary mathematics. The main objective of the conference was to discuss numerous applications of the Atlases and to explore recent developments and future directions of research, with focus on the interaction between computation and theory and applications to number theory and algebraic geometry. The papers in this volume are based on talks given at the conference. They present a comprehensive survey on current research in all of these fields.

Book Endotrivial Modules

Download or read book Endotrivial Modules written by Nadia Mazza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an in-depth report on the endotrivial modules, an important class of modular representations for finite groups. Following the historical development of the theory, the book starts with a review of the necessary definitions and some key examples. The main results obtained using traditional techniques are then presented, followed by more recent results such as the work of Grodal inspired by algebraic topology. In the last part of the book original methods are applied to obtain the group of endotrivial modules for certain very important groups. An accessible reference collecting half a century of research on endotrivial modules, this book will be of interest to researchers in algebra.

Book Higher Genus Curves in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry

Download or read book Higher Genus Curves in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry written by Andreas Malmendier and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Higher Genus Curves and Fibrations in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry, held on January 8, 2016, in Seattle, Washington. Algebraic curves and their fibrations have played a major role in both mathematical physics and arithmetic geometry. This volume focuses on the role of higher genus curves; in particular, hyperelliptic and superelliptic curves in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. The articles in this volume investigate the automorphism groups of curves and superelliptic curves and results regarding integral points on curves and their applications in mirror symmetry. Moreover, geometric subjects are addressed, such as elliptic 3 surfaces over the rationals, the birational type of Hurwitz spaces, and links between projective geometry and abelian functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real history of the covey of attention-artists who call themselves "The Birds." A great deal of uncertainty--and even some genuine confusion--surrounds the origin, evolution, and activities of the so-called Avis Tertia or "Order of the Third Bird." Sensational accounts of this "attentional cult" emphasize histrionic rituals, tragic trance-addictions, and the covert dissemination of obscurantist ontologies of the art object. Hieratic, ecstatic, and endlessly evasive, the Order attracts sensual misfits and cabalistic aesthetes--both to its ranks, and to its scholarship. In recent years, however, the revisionist work of the research collective ESTAR(SER) has done much to clear the air, bringing archival precision to the history of this covey of attention-artists who call themselves "The Birds." Gathering the best articles of the last twenty years of The Proceedings of ESTAR(SER), this volume represents a landmark in the history of aesthetic practices, and will be a point of departure for future work wading the muddy marshes at the limits of historicism.

Download or read book Simon written by Alexander Masters and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Masters tripped over his first book subject on a Cambridge sidewalk, and the result was the multi-award-winning bestseller Stuart: A Life Backwards. His second, he’s found under his floorboards. One of the greatest mathematical prodigies of the twentieth century, Simon Norton stomps around Alexander’s basement in semidarkness, dodging between stalagmites of bus timetables and engorged plastic bags, eating tinned kippers stirred into packets of Bombay mix. Simon is exploring a theoretical puzzle so complex and critical to our understanding of the universe that it is known as the Monster. It looks like a sudoku table—except a sudoku table has nine columns of numbers. The Monster has 808017424794512875886459904961710757005754368000000000 columns. But that’s not the whole story. What’s inside the decaying sports bag he never lets out of his clutches? Why does he hurtle out of the house in the middle of the night? And—good God!—what is that noxious smell that creeps up the stairwell? Grumpy, poignant, comical—more intimate than either the author or his quarry intended—Simon: The Genius in My Basement is the story of a friendship and a pursuit. Part biography, part memoir, and part popular science, it is a study of the frailty of brilliance, the measures of happiness, and Britain’s most uncooperative egghead eccentric.
