Book Finite Element Modeling of Gas surface Interactions in Hypersonic Flight

Download or read book Finite Element Modeling of Gas surface Interactions in Hypersonic Flight written by Yuzhen Huang and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Numerical simulations of the effects of gas-surface interactions on gas composition and heat flux at the surface are of paramount importance to the design of thermal protection system of hypersonic vehicles. The present work extends the capabilities of the edge-based finite element three-dimensional all-Mach-number computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code HALO3D by the introduction of partially catalytic and finite-rate surface chemistry models. The partially catalytic model assumes that a fraction of the impinging atoms, whose value is governed by recombination efficiencies derived from arcjet test data, recombines on the surface. Its development is validated using the test data of the Electre blunt cone from the high-enthalpy shock tunnel of the German Aerospace Center. Results are obtained for a five-species Mach 9.7 flow using an unstructured mesh that underwent several anisotropic optimization cycles through OptiGrid. The heat flux profiles for partially catalytic surfaces are in good agreement with previously published numerical solutions and experimental data. The more accurate finite-rate surface chemistry model calculates recombination rates using surface reaction kinetics. Surface species with distinct thermodynamic properties are introduced to complement existing volume species. Three types of surface reaction mechanisms are considered: adsorption/desorption, Eley-Rideal, and Langmuir-Hinshelwood, with the reaction rate coefficients being dependent on surface properties. The spatial assembly and temporal integration of species production terms are validated by matching the transient response of a reactor with an analytical solution for a single irreversible adsorption reaction. The computation of forward and backward surface reaction rate coefficients is verified by comparing the equilibrium results of a reactor with multiple reversible surface reactions with previously published numerical solutions. Finally, a simulation with a reacting air flow around a cylinder with a catalytic silica surface is performed to demonstrate near-wall gas composition calculations using the finite-rate surface chemistry model. This work enables HALO3D to provide accurate predictions of gas composition and heat flux at the surface for the practical design of hypersonic vehicles and constitutes a cornerstone to further code extensions that are currently underway at the McGill University CFD Laboratory, focusing on the modeling of partially ionized flows and ablation"--

Book Coupling of Gas surface Interaction and Material Response in Hypersonic Ablation

Download or read book Coupling of Gas surface Interaction and Material Response in Hypersonic Ablation written by Guangwei Liu and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hypersonic flight has seen a considerable resurgence of interest over the past two decades. Several unique physical phenomena occur in this ultra-high-speed regime, one of them being a bow shock appearing in front of the vehicle. There is a rapid increase in temperature across this thin shock layer that imposes high heat loads on the windward surface of the aircraft. Thermal Protection Systems are therefore crucial to prevent heat damage. Such systems consist of a layer of insulation covering the craft's surface. Experimental trials on Thermal Protection Systems are complex, expensive, and difficult to repeat because of the hypersonic flow conditions and shape of the vehicles. CFD can complement experiments by providing reliable predictions for a wide range of operating conditions and complex geometries. It is thus the most viable approach at the design stages. The present work extends the capabilities of the HALO3D (High Altitude Low Orbit, 3D) hypersonic flow simulation software to predict the surface ablation behavior along the re-entry trajectory of a vehicle. A loosely coupled model is established to consider the thermochemical non-equilibrium of the flow field and heat transfer inside the solid protection layer. The gasdynamic equations of chemical-thermal non-equilibrium air and the heat conduction in the solid material are solved separately and loosely coupled to increase computational efficiency. The surface chemistry is solved involving the gaseous reactant from the Thermal Protection Systems as well as chemical non-equilibrium conditions. The gas-surface interactions are simulated with a quasi-steady assumption. By contrast, the material response is solved transiently and coupled with gas-surface interaction results through interface boundary conditions. The computational grids of both fluid and solid domains are updated at every trajectory point. The surface chemistry solver is verified and validated with various freestream temperatures and pressures. The coupling between gas-surface interaction and material response is verified through one-dimensional heat transfer. The loosely coupled ablation approach is first validated for a rocket engine blast pipe with given surface regression rates and temperature-dependent material properties. The capabilities of the proposed coupling methodology are then demonstrated for a scenario of hypersonic flow over a half-cylinder"--

Book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics written by John David Anderson and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.

Book Modeling Analysis and Control of a Hypersonic Vehicle with Significant Aero thermo elastic propulsion Interactions

Download or read book Modeling Analysis and Control of a Hypersonic Vehicle with Significant Aero thermo elastic propulsion Interactions written by Jaidev Khatri and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines themodeling, analysis, and control system design issues for scramjet powered hypersonic vehicles. A nonlinear three degrees of freedom longitudinal model which includes aero-propulsion-elasticity effects was used for all analyses. This model is based upon classical compressible flow and Euler-Bernouli structural concepts. Higher fidelity computational fluid dynamics and finite element methods are needed for more precise intermediate and final evaluations. The methods presented within this thesis were shown to be useful for guiding initial control relevant design. The model was used to examine the vehicle's static and dynamic characteristics over the vehicle's trimmable region. The vehicle has significant longitudinal coupling between the fuel equivalency ratio (FER) and the flight path angle (FPA). For control system design, a two-input two-output plant (FER - elevator to speed-FPA) with 11 states (including 3 flexible modes) was used. Velocity, FPA, and pitch were assumed to be available for feedback. Aerodynamic heat modeling and design for the assumed TPS was incorporated to original Bolender's model to study the change in static and dynamic properties. De-centralized control stability, feasibility and limitations issues were dealt with the change in TPS elasticity, mass and physical dimension. The impact of elasticity due to TPS mass, TPS physical dimension as well as prolonged heating was also analyzed to understand performance limitations of de-centralized control designed for nominal model.
