Book Finite Element Modeling and Simulation of Thermomechanical Processing of Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Finite Element Modeling and Simulation of Thermomechanical Processing of Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites written by Kendall Gennick and published by . This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the consolidation phase, reinforcement particles of Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) tend to be non uniformly distributed. The result is that the material properties of the composite materials are not as good as those originally desired. Through large amounts of straining, homogeneity can be achieved. Finite element models of MMC's undergoing different thermomechanical processes (TMP's) to true strains of approximately 1.2 were generated. The models consist of particle clusters within the particle-depleted matrix. The particle clusters were modeled by either a smeared model in which the particles refine the grains in the cluster, or a discrete model of the particles within clusters. The smeared and discrete models qualitatively agreed with each other. The results suggest that the best TMP to reach a state of reinforcement particle homogeneity was a hot worked, low strain rate TMP.

Book Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites written by Minoru Taya and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

Book Numerical Modelling and Simulation of Metal Processing

Download or read book Numerical Modelling and Simulation of Metal Processing written by Christof Sommitsch and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with metal processing and its numerical modelling and simulation. In total, 21 papers from different distinguished authors have been compiled in this area. Various processes are addressed, including solidification, TIG welding, additive manufacturing, hot and cold rolling, deep drawing, pipe deformation, and galvanizing. Material models are developed at different length scales from atomistic simulation to finite element analysis in order to describe the evolution and behavior of materials during thermal and thermomechanical treatment. Materials under consideration are carbon, Q&T, DP, and stainless steels; ductile iron; and aluminum, nickel-based, and titanium alloys. The developed models and simulations shall help to predict structure evolution, damage, and service behavior of advanced materials.

Book Introduction to Computational Plasticity

Download or read book Introduction to Computational Plasticity written by Fionn Dunne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-09 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to computational plasticity and includes the kinematics of large deformations, together with relevant continuum mechanics. Central to the book is its focus on computational plasticity, and we cover an introduction to the finite element method which includes both quasi-static and dynamic problems. We then go on to describe explicit and implicit implementations of plasticity models in to finite element software. Throughout the book, we describe thegeneral, multiaxial form of the theory but uniquely, wherever possible, reduce the equations to their simplest, uniaxial form to develop understanding of the general theory and, we hope, physical insight. We provide several examples of implicit and explicit implementations of von Mises time-independentand visco-plasticity in to the commercial code ABAQUS (including the fortran coding), which should prove invaluable to research students and practising engineers developing ABAQUS 'UMATs'. The book bridges the gap between undergraduate material on plasticity and existing advanced texts on nonlinear computational mechanics, which makes it ideal for students and practising engineers alike. It introduces a range of engineering applications, including superplasticity, porous plasticity, cyclicplasticity and thermo-mechanical fatigue, to emphasize the subject's relevance and importance.

Book Analysis of Thermomechanical Cyclic Behavior of Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Analysis of Thermomechanical Cyclic Behavior of Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composites written by NE. Ashbaugh and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical tool is developed to determine the three-dimensional stress state in a unidirectional composite subjected to axial loading and changes in temperature. A finite difference method is used to analyze a representative volume element of the composite which consists of concentric cylinders. The constituents are assumed to be elastic-plastic materials having temperature dependent properties. An iterative technique using the Prandtl-Reuss flow rule to determine incremental plastic strains is implemented in a computer code capable of predicting the axisymmetric triaxial stresses in a composite under thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loading conditions. The model is verified with finite element method calculations for the problem of thermal residual stresses resulting from cool-down from the processing temperature. Results for several TMF loading conditions are compared with experimental data and 1-D predictions for a SCS-6 silicon carbide fiber and Ti-24Al-11Nb matrix composite. Significant differences are noted between results based on 1-D and 3-D approximations to the stress state in a composite and are discussed in detail.

Book Process Modelling of Metal Forming and Thermomechanical Treatment

Download or read book Process Modelling of Metal Forming and Thermomechanical Treatment written by Claudio R. Boer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the objective of the series IIMaterials Research and Engineeringll to publish information on technical facts and pro cesses together with specific scientific models and theories. Fundamental considerations assist in the recognition of the origin of properties and the roots of processes. By providing a higher level of understanding, such considerations form the basis for further improving the quality of both traditional and future engineering materials, as well as the efficiency of industrial operations. In a more general sense, theory helps to integrate facts into a framework which ties relations between physical equilibria and mechanisms on the one hand, product development and econo mical competition on the other. Aspects of environmental compati bili ty, conservation of resources and of socio-cul tural inter action form the final horizon - a subject treated in the first ll volume of this series, IIMaterials in World Perspective . The four authors of the present book endeavor to present a comprehensive picture of process modelling in the important field of metal forming and thermomechanical treatment. The reader will be introduced to the rapidly-growing new field of application of computer-aided numerical methods to the quanti tative simulation of complex technical processes. Extensive use is made of the state of scientific knowledge related to materials behavior under mechanical stress and thermal treat ment.
